A âMonsterâ From The Surface? (Part 2)
Chris felt his palm become constricted from Torielâs handshake. She had quite a grip for what the wolf assumed was a gentle woman.
After they broke off the handshake, Toriel was about to speak when a low rumbling sound occurred. It was after Chris looked down at his body that the pair realized that it was the wolfâs stomach growling. He appeared sheepish while Toriel could only smile.
Chris gave his answer rather quickly, much to Torielâs delight.
Toriel promptly left the bedroom and went to the right, her feet making a cushioned sound upon the plywood floor. Bathroom? Oh. Right. She probably wanted him to freshen up. Rolling his shoulders, he looked to his left down the hallway and found the only open door. Yep, the bathroom. It was actually a large bathroom so Chris assumed that she had to have shared it with someone else.It was painted blue and the porcelain was very sleek. Chris turned on the sink and washed his hands thoroughly, splashing some cold water on his face to wake himself up a bit.
With an audible grunt and a shiver up and down his body, Chris managed to look at himself in the mirror. He didnât even really know why he felt like he had to. It was almost like confirming this was really happening. Seeing his face in the mirror as heâs always seen it made him breathe a sigh of relief.
Chris could not exactly trust Toriel completely. If she really was the one who assisted him, he would be very grateful. But given how hazy his memories of his fall were, he didnât want to presume anything. After drying off his hands, he left the bathroom and headed in the same direction that Toriel went towards. The rest of the house had this very safe ambiance which helped Chris relax a little. Going past a flight of stairs heading downwards, he saw Toriel putting a slice of pie on the table.
The pieâs crust was a scrumptious shade of chocolate and it was decorated with whipped cream. The pie itself was white with something mixed in. It almost looked like a sandwich cookie.
Toriel noticed his arrival and beamed.
Chris could feel his throat yearn for the slice of pie as soon as she mentioned the flavor.
Chris quickly grinned back at Toriel. Oh how wrong she was. So wrong that he didnât care that his tail just started wagging like crazy.
Toriel immediately retrieved another slice of pie for the wolf, placing the plate down complimented with a fork. She moved a chair that was on one end of the table closer to the other end. She seated herself in the chair she moved and Chris made himself comfortable in the other chair. Chris took a small forkful and brought it to his mouth. The sweet vanilla first took over his tastebuds until he chewed on the chocolate cookie pieces and crust. Then he savored every bit of it before swallowing.Â
Chris took another bite of the pie. It was so pleasing to just have the dessert rest in his mouth and roll it around on his tongue before consuming it.
The two both took separate bites from each of their own slices, stealing looks at each other and laughing to themselves. Chris was feeling a bit odd that he was quickly warming up to Toriel. This mysterious goat lady was really being more nice than she had to be for him. After finishing off his slice of pie, Chris wiped his mouth with a nearby napkin.
The wolf saw Torielâs smile waver. She set her plate aside and clasped her hands together on top of the table, playing with her fingers.
Really? The place was immaculately clean with not a hint of dust in sight. But it did sort of make sense. He would have seen somebody else at this point. Chris decided to just act like he didnât put it together just now.
That might not have been the best question to ask next but it was the most logical one. Torielâs smile disappeared and her hands clenched together very tightly. Chris could now tell that the subject of family was sensitive to her. He didnât want to assume the worst. Her face fell a bit and she couldnât make eye contact with Chris.
Yeah, thatâs what he thought. Crap. From the way Toriel said that, he could have sworn that she looked towards the bedroom he woke up in. The best thing he could do now was just drop the matter.Â
That was good to hear. Chris offered to wash the dishes. In his mind, it was just to make up for bringing up something that was close to Toriel. Something was still off to him. Not about Toriel but where he was. It definitely felt like a nice little home but...something was not right. After finishing up with the dishes, he saw Toriel preparing a knapsack back in the living room. She was putting the pie in there along with a few neatly stacked books.
Toriel looked up from her knapsack, holding a book in her hands. Chris could see that the title was â101 Magnificent Ways to Use Snails.â
She showed off the other books she was planning to take, like âThe Bone Guyâs Guide to Punsâ âSpider Pastry Recipesâ âThe Mysteries of Custardâ and âBallad of the Tsundere.â Chris chuckled at each of the covers but then he slowly realized what Toriel had just said.Â
Toriel placed her books back in her bag and was confused.
Toriel stood in stunned silence. Her eyes went up and down Chrisâs body like a scanner, trying to detect something different about Chris that she could have missed.
Chris could hear a sound come from her throat while she tried to finish her sentence.
Chris did his best to clear his mind and just breathe. Given the fact that she just referred to him as a monster while she would definitely fit in back home told him that the âoffâ feeling he had was starting to become more clear.
Toriel once again had that sullen expression from earlier but it was less about personal pain and more about concern for his well-being.
Chris could feel his body shiver at the thought of something in the dark preparing to do...whatever violent things it likely would have had in mind.Â
Chris didnât realize right away what caused him to say what he just said. But something inside was now fully ready to trust Toriel and make sure that, whatever comes next, heâll protect her.
Wow, this one took a bit to do. Making these text boxes were super fun.
And, just like I promised, full credit for Chrisâs sprites go completely to @combotron. I edited some of the portrait sprites to better fit the mood but heâs the one who deserves credit for making them.
And before anyone assumes, no, Iâm not shipping Chris and Toriel. XD
Iâm hoping people want to see more, because I do need some help. :P
Iâm tagging this âlong postâ for anyone who might not want this on their dash.
