Various SU-themed Patreon requests Iâve completed over the past half a year or so. :)Â
Here you go: SU x QE crossover magicÂ
This is a parody comic I made for myself to hand out at SDCC2018 and isnât official so donât sweat the small stuff!
Many thanks to ghostdigits for her help. She is my spell checker extraordinaire and listened to me bounce ideas around in the eleventh hour while I worried if I ever knew anything about comedy in the first place. HahahaâŠhahaâŠ.aaa.⊠go, fight, win/finish a comic!
Hereâs the comic I passed out to anyone who spotted me or any SU cosplay that I spotted as I walked San Diego and NY Comic Con last year.Â
(In case it isnât obvious, this exists because it makes me laugh and not because itâs cannon or anything like that.)
Video Games for Japanese Learners Part 2 (English and Japanese Bilingual)
The Legend of Zelda Series
Recommended level of Japanese â beginner to intermediate (JLPT N4, N3)
ăăăăăźæ„æŹèȘèœćăŹăă«ïŒćçŽ~äžçŽ (JLPT N4ăN3)
So now let me talk about the Zelda games. They are loved by gamers all over the world. Just like the Dragonquest series, the earlier titles on the Famicom only have hiragana. Nintendo gradually started adding kanji to the games as the console generations progressed. Again, I wonât list all the games here but will list a few that are worth checking out.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (ăŒă«ăăźäŒèȘŹ æăźăȘă«ăȘă) for the Nintendo 64 and Nintendo 3DS
Probably the most popular title in the whole series. The Nintendo 64 version of this game has quite a bit of kanji, but shouldnât be too much of a problem if you are at an intermediate level of Japanese. Luckily, the 3DS version has furigana written above the kanji. It is also possible to play the Nintendo 64 version of this game of the Nintendo Switch via the Japanese version of Nintendo Switch Online subscription service.

The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker (ăŒă«ăăźäŒèȘŹ éąšăźăżăŻă) for the Nintendo Gamecube and Nintendo Wii U (HD Remake)
Both versions of this game have kanji with furigana written above. Probably the most polarizing title amongst fans due to the cutesy art style and cell-shaded graphics. I personally love the art style!

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild (ăŒă«ăăźäŒèȘŹăăŹăčăȘăă¶ăŻă€ă«ă) for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Wii U
This game has kanji with furigana written above. It has more dialogue and a lot of NPCs to talk to compared to the older titles, so this one is highly recommended for those who want a lot of reading practice.

Recommended level of Japanese: beginner (JLPT N5 or N4)
ăăăăăźæ„æŹèȘèœćăŹăă«ïŒćçŽïœäžçŽă(JLPT N5ăN4)
This game is considered to be the sequel to Super Mario RPG on the Super Famicom/SNES. It has mostly hiragana and very simple kanji here and there. This one would even be fun to play with children because of the cute art style and simple gameplay. This game can also be played via the Japanese version of the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service.

This is mesmerizing to watch.
actually physically painful to watch because you know months were spent masking all those frames for each of the kajillions of transitions in this
HolyâŠâŠâŠ..shmokesâŠâŠ.
Oh?? My god??
Iâll try my best to describe this. Itâs a video with a mash-up of a bunch of different Disney movies, set to a song thatâs a mash-up of a bunch of other songs. That in and of itself wouldnât make it praiseworthy, but this is DONE SO WELL that just, holy cow.
HOLY SHIT
I just really want to write a book (in fact, I think that Iâm going to) where the protagonist is in a wheelchair. And they live in a city where thereâs a group of superheroes. And thereâs a big, magical, villain because of course there is.
And since they were a young child, this protagonist has wanted nothing more than to join the group of superheroes. Like theyâre a huge fan of the group and they just know that itâs their destiny to join.
And one day, when wheeling through the city, they see the group of heroes fighting the villain. And they quickly wheel over and cry, âLet me help!â
But the âheroesâ laugh and instead make a whole bunch of ableist remarks.
And so the protagonist has to prove themselves.
And the villain is trying to warn them to stop.
But the protagonist ends up taking their footrest off of their wheelchair and they swing it. And it hits the villain in the side of the face and the villain collapses and groans in pain.
And so the protagonist proudly smiles and turns to the group of heroes.
Because they just proved that they are strong and worthy enough.
But the group of âheroesâ still keeps making ableist remarks.
And the protagonist is shocked.
And meanwhile, the âvillainâ staggers to their feet and is standing next to the protagonistâ wheelchair.
And one of the âheroesâ goes too far when calling the protagonist the R word.
And the protagonist and the âvillainâ just sort of glance at one another.
And the âvillainâ is just like, âYou knowâŠI can zap them for youâŠif you want.â
And the protagonist hesitates and says, âYeah, alright!â
One fried group of heroes later, the âvillainâ says, âWhy do you think that Iâm always fighting them? Theyâre all a bunch of assholes.â
And the protagonist sadly nods and starts to wheel away.
Then:
âHey, do you want a job?â
The protagonist turns at the villainâs remark. And the protagonist mumbles something like, âOh, come on. I donât need your pity.â
And the âvillainâ is like, âPity!? Do I look like someone who hands out pity!? I donât pity you! Iâm kind of afraid of you, to be honest! I meanâŠIâm going to have a giant bruise on my face because of you.â
âYeahâŠsorryâŠâ
âWater under the bridge! So, what do you say? Do you want a job?â
And the protagonist thinks about it for a minute before shrugging.
And the âvillainâ is all excited because theyâve wanted someone to work with them for years but no mortal is allowed to âstep intoâ their lair.
And then the âvillainâ stops and is like, âHang onâŠyou canât work with me in that.â
And they gesture to the protagonistâs wheelchair.
And the protagonist is all embarrassed.
And then the villain goes, âBecause we can get you a much better wheelchair! Itâll look great! And itâll be indestructible! And itâll have all sorts of weapons and gadgets! Hey, how do you feel about flyingâŠ?â
And all of that is literally in the first chapter and then the rest of the story follows the two going around the city like BAMFs, forcing people to stop being ableist, one way or another. And maybe itâll have some commentary on the scale of morality and what it truly means to be a hero and what it truly means to be a villain.
Would anyone be interested in this!?
Because I really want to write it!?
YESSSSS. ALL MY YES PLS WRITE IT
IâD READ THE SHIT OUT OF THAT YES PLEASE
OP HERE!
Man, itâs so surreal to look at this.
BECAUSE I ACTUALLY WROTE IT!
AND IT WAS JUST PUBLISHED TONIGHT!
Of course, there are some differences between the final book and this original idea. The most notable difference is that all of this takes place in the first book (itâs going to be a series!) and the whole âsuperheroâ thing is just going to be a front. Thereâs a few other differences as well (such as a huge plotline involving Merlin and immortal characters!)
BUT I WROTE IT!
AND ITâS PUBLISHED!
AND IF YOUâRE INTERESTED, YOU CAN BUY IT HERE:

On Fanfiction
I was cruising through the net, following the cold trail of one of the periodic âIs or is not Fanfic the Ultimate Literary Evil?â arguments that crop up regularly, and Iâm now bursting to make a point that I never see made by fic defenders.
Weâre all familiar with the normal defenses of fic: itâs done out of love, itâs training, itâs for fun. Those are all good and valid defenses!
But they miss something. They damn with faint praise. Because the thing is, when you commit this particular Ultimate Literary Evil youâve now told a story. And stories are powerful. The fact that it wasnât in an original world or with original characters doesnât necessarily make it less powerful to any given reader.
I would never have made this argument a few years ago. A few years ago I hadnât received messages from people who were deeply touched by something I wrote in fanfic. So what if itâs only two or three or four people, and I used someone elseâs world and characters? For those two or three or four people, I wrote something fucking important. You cannot tell me that isnât a valid use of my time and expect me to feel chastened. I donât buy it. I wonât feel ashamed. I will laugh when you call something that touches other people âliterary masturbation.â Apparently youâre not too up on your sex terminology.
Someone could argue that if Iâd managed the same thing with original characters in an original world, it couldâve touched more people. They might be right! On the other hand, it might never have been accepted for publication, or found a market if self published, and more importantly I would never have written it because I didnât realize I could write. The story wouldnât have happened. Instead, thanks to fanfic being a thing, it did. And for two or three or four people it mattered. When we talk about defending fanfic, can we occasionally talk about that?
I once had an active serviceman who told me that my FF7 and FF8 fic helped get him through the war. Thatâll humble you. People have told me my fanfic helped get them through long nights, through grief, through hard times. It was a solace to people who needed solace. And because it was fanfic, it was easier to reach the people who needed it. They knew those people already. That world was dear to them already. They were being comforted by friends, not strangers.
Stories are like swords. Even if youâve borrowed the sword, even if you didnât forge it yourself from ore and fire, itâs still your body and your skill that makes use of it. It can still draw blood, it can strike down things that attack you, it can still defend something you hold dear. Donât get me wrong, a sword youâve made yourself is powerful. You know it down to its very molecules, are intimate with its heft and its reach. It is part of your own arm. But that can make you hesitate to use it sometimes, if youâre afraid that swinging it too recklessly will notch the blade. Is it strong enough, you think. Will it stand this? I worked so hard to make it. A blade you snatched up because you needed a weapon in your hand is not prey to such fears. You will use it to beat against your foes until it either saves you or it shatters.
But whether you made that sword yourself or picked it up from someone who fell on the field, the fight you fight with it is always yours.
Literary critics who sneer at fanfic are so infuriatingly shortsighted, because they all totally ignore how their precious literature, as in individual stories that are created, disseminated, and protected as commercial products, are a totally modern industrial capitalist thing and honestly not how humans have ever done it before like a couple centuries ago. Plus like, who benefits most from literature? Same dudes who benefit most from capitalism: the people in power, the people with privilege. Thereâs a reason literary canon is composed of fucking white straight dudes who write about white straight dudes fucking.Â
Fanfiction is a modern expression of the oral traditionâfor the rest of us, by the rest of us, about the rest of usâand I think thatâs fucking wonderful and speaks to a need that absolutely isnât being met by the publishing industry. The need to come together as a close community, I think, and take the characters of our mythology and tell them getting drunk and married and tricked and left behind and sent to war and comforted and found again and learning the lessons that every generation learns over and over. Itâs wonderful. I love it. Iâm always going to love it.Â
Stories are fractal by nature. Even when thereâs just one version in print, you have it multiplied by every readerâs experience of it in light of who they are, what they like, what they want. And then many people will put themselves in the place of the protagonist, or another character, and spend a lot of time thinking about what theyâd do in that characterâs place. Or adjusting happenings so they like the results better.
Thatâs not fic yet, but it is a story.
But the best stories grow. This can happen in the language of capitalismâa remake of a classic movie, a series of books focusing on what happened afterwards or beforeâor it can happen in the language of humanity. Children playing with sticks as lightsabers, Jedi Princess Leia saving Alderaan by dueling Vader; a father reading his kids The Hobbit as a bedtime story as an interactive, âwhat would you like to happen next?â way so that the dwarves win the wargs over with doggie biscuits that they had in their pockets and ride to Erebor on giant wolves, people writing and sharing their ideas for deleted outtake scenes from Star Trek and slow-build fierce and tender romance with startling bursts of hot sex between Hawkeye and Agent Coulson.
A story at its most successful is a fully developed fractal, retold a million times and a million ways, with stories based on stories based on stories. Fanfic of fanfic of fanfic. Stories based on headcanons, stories based on prompts, stories that put the Guardians of the Galaxy in a coffee-shop AU and stories where the Transformers are planet-wandering nomads and stories where characters from one story are placed into a world from another. Stories that could be canon, stories that are the farthest thing from canon, stories that are plausible, stories that would never happen, stories that give depth to a character or explore the consequences of one different plot event or rewrite the whole thing from scratch.
This is what stories are supposed to be.
This is what stories are.
Fandom and fan creations are a communal act. They do not disguise how they are influenced by each other. They revel in it.
Literature was once a communal act, too. Film as well. Itâs only once we decided to extend and expand the idea of copyright and turn stories into primarily vehicles for profit that we rejected this communal structure. The literary canon shouldnât be all dead white men. They didnât build the novel. They didnât build theater. They took what was already there and said âThis is mine now,â and we believed them.
Creativity is communal. There is no such thing as the lone genius on a mountaintop. Ideas are passed around, handed back and forth, growing all the time. Fandom is what human creativity looks like in its normal form. Fandom is like this because humans are like this.
We didnât just borrow the sword. We remade it because we saw in it the potential for something better. And we did that together, all of us.
wednesday addams makes a friend
okay, but imagine:
wednesday is at the local library with her father, searching the shelves for a book uncle fester told her about dangerous animals in south america. Gomez strikes up a conversation with the elderly librarian mrs. phelps to help wednesday find what they are looking for.
âThat one? Or, Mr. Addams - Iâm afraid itâs been checked out.â
a squeaky wheel catches wednesdayâs attention, and right past her walks a girl with an ENTIRE red-rocket wagon topped full of books. the girl carefully looks over each book and drops them carefully into the book-return
thatâs when wednesday sees it - the book sheâs been looking for.
wednesday walked slowly up to the girlâs wagon, and touched the cover.
âI just finished that one,â the girl says. wednesday straightens up. âIt has a fascinating chapter on the red-bellied piranhas of South America.â
âWeâre looking at getting one for Pugsleyâs tank,â wednesday says.
âA piranha? It will eat your fish,â she said.
âIâm counting on it.â
âIs Pugsley your fish?â
âMy brother.â Wednesday replied.
The girl thought a moment. âYouâll need at least a dozen - they hunt best in schools.â
wednesday just barely smiled, a single corner of her lips turning up. âIâm wednesday addams.â she said, extending a hand.
âMatilda,â the girl replied, shaking her hand. âMatilda Wormwood.â
I think the best part about this is that the Addams would adore her and just shower her with love.
âWormwood,â says Gomez, enchanted. âWhat a lovely name.âÂ
They be the best book buddies.
You just know that between a spooky little goth and a happy go lucky telekinetic, they would take over the damn world.Â
Matilda tells Wednesday what itâs like at home, and Wednesday tells her parents. Morticia and Gomez thank her for telling them, and go into the other room to talk.
The next day, the Wormwoods have gone on an indefinite vacation and need the Addams family to watch their daughter while theyâre gone.
What? It doesnât matter where theyâre going. Stop asking.
Of course it has nothing to do with the large gentleman and the severed hand who showed up to help Matilda pack yesterday.
And it certainly has nothing to do with the fact that Mr. Wormwood came home to a hungry lion in his living room, with a very calm and very pale woman sitting in his chair, giving the lion a belly rub and saying she âjust wanted to speak to you about our daughters.â
Donât be silly.
Miss Honey turns up one day to say that she had planned to adopt Matilda herself. The Addamses take one look at her, having already heard quite enough about the Trunchbull, and promptly adjourn to the parlor for a family meeting.
After some whispered conversation-Â âCara, sheâs twenty-three. Twenty-three, for pityâs sake! And barely more than skin and bones!â -the pocket doors slide open and the entire family gravely approaches the young teacher. Who, for her part, doesnât look frightened in the least.
âThereâs a perfectly lovely tower room in the East Wing, my dear,â Morticia says, taking her gently by the arm. âYou look like you could use some rest.â
One canât adopt an adult, not legally. But nevertheless, the Addamses gain two new daughters that week.
