Project A Final Spreads 13/5/23
These are the final spreads that are all typeset. Thoughts and notes for each image are presented below.
Illustrated type used to suggest words that are heard from beyond the physical plane. Beyond the narrator themselves. Takes influences from blackletter and Bible typography.
Visual motif of the “mass” initated here.
Visual ideas of melting, liquid, and merging begin here and continue throughout and in the type.
Pink contrasting color to draw the eye and create some visual hierarchy.
Includes an altar, a priest, archiecture, and implied scripture.
Building on the idea of the “mass” and a convergence of bodies and ideas to form one whole entity.
Uses the typeface “Ode” to reference biblical type.
Continuing visual motifs of melting and liquification.
Establishing a sense of space.
Introducing the light fixture concept.
Surrealist image construction with the concept of floating scissors to reference what is said in the copy without directly illustrating it. Attempting to provide something new in addition to the type.
Playing with the viewers understanding of scale and consistency.
Includes a Bible, a rosary, and the wafers often used in Communion during Mass.
Using the pink in varying levels to highlight certain pieces of information and also to denote a different or new speaker.
Hypnotic repitition of line and shape.
Introducing a secondary contrasting color. Blue is tied to water, cleansing, and transformation through Baptism (what is being referenced here).
Beginning a transitional part of the zine, going from pink to blue.
Continuing several established visual motifs.
Sudden visual contrast from the rest of the zine. A moment of peace with an undercurrent of dread.
Again, playing with scale and continuity based on the previous spread.
Contrasting the imagery and the words in a way that enhances the overall messaging of the zine.
Again, illustrated type used to suggest words that are heard from beyond the physical plane. Beyond the narrator themselves.
This type is another example of combining the old and the new.
Idea of light as a revealer. Water as a transitional state.
Inclusion of both the pink, blue, and base gray color palette together. Creating this ver visually over-stimulating look.
Intentional capitalization of the word “He”. This only appears here.
The climax of the visual overstimulation.
Includes a creepy angel figure and the idea of the baby being changed into something new (“Lamb of God”).
Bringing back several consistent visual motifs.
A callback to create catharsis and visual resolution. The literary idea of “Chekov’s Gun” is very present here.
Simplifying after the visual overstimulation to manipulate what the viewer feels at the end. A sigh of relief almost. Highlights the final two words.
Referencing ornate church facades.
Open doors to invite the viewer in.
The title “Mass” references both the name of the Catholic ceremony and the physical mass I illustrate throughout the zine.
