I kept seeing these posts about âhow Ghostbusters ruined my childhoodâ or I honestly donât like Ghostbusters not because theyâre girls per seââ or âthat movie has really bad CGI and humorâ and so on.
Well, about the CGI there are some parts that look bad, but itâs not awful. It might not be the best, but itâs good enough. Plus, the soundtrack is awesome.
People keep comparing Ghostbusters with movies with female leads such as Mad Max, Hunger Games, Star Wars or Wonder Woman. They keep saying I donât hate movies with female leads, see those movies I mentioned? Ghostbusters is just awful. Which, I have to point out that these movies have huge differences with Ghostbusters that itâs not even right to compare them.
In Mad Max and the like, while they have female leads, but men in the movies arenât just decoration. Theyâre not useless. These men are bad ass enough in the movies which kind of sooth fragile male egos. IT DOESNâT MEAN there was no opposition. Remember how much people bitch about Rey being a Jedi saying woman is too emotional to be a Jedi (which is â???â, have they ever watch how emotional Anakin and Kylo are?)? Or how people said Gadot isnât hot enough to be Wonder Woman (Hello, Gadot is Miss Israel). Or how much they kept saying bad things about Mad Max Fury Road (coughSOMANYOSCARScough). Even how Jennifer Lawrence wasnât thin enough in Hunger Games.
Might as well mention how much people hated John Boyega in Star Wars because of his race. But hey, look at that. Star Wars 7 is the third highest-grossing film of all time. With a woman and a black man as the leads which people bitched about because some people are just too narrow-minded to live.
Itâs different from Ghostbusters. In this movie, men are just useless and eyecandy. WHICH IS PRECISELY how women are treated in movies for a long time. They might preach how much inequality between sexes in this movie, but how about all those movies where women are treated like dirt? What did they say, that these movies are just comedy and women should chill? Because Ghostbusters is exactly all those movies in reverse gender. Ghostbusters is a comedy. Which is why, MRA should just chill. If they keep whining about inequality, well do something about those movies where women are treated like dirt. Also, there are few movies with badass female and male leads to sooth their delicate egos, if they donât stop whining about this.
Personally, Ghostbusters is needed to wake people for a reality check. For how much they hate men treated as useless, women have been feeling the same about movies for a long time. Ghostbusters ruined their childhood? Well, itâs not their childhood this movie is for. Ghostbusters is for little girls who need good role models.
As for humor, Ghostbusters humor is relatable to women, which is probably too sharp for fragile male egos (and then they have to bitch about how women donât know what humor is). Did the jokes hit them where it hurts? Well, welcome to the world of women, who have to get used since we were kids of men using objectifying jokes about women for all our lives.
Ghostbusters women are each different from the other. They are different shaped, they have their own opinions and ambitions, but they are loyal to each other. Both Erin and Abby have long fulfilled friendshipâwhich stereotype once said girls canât have fulfilled friendship like boys do. Abby loves what she does, and her size doesnât matter when she can kick ass just fine. Erin is a sweet woman, but it doesnât mean she canât have ambition to get what she wants. Jillian makes girls go gay (which is a problem for boys because they canât compete with the glory of Holtzmann). Patty works as a MTA worker but she still smiles doing her job and generally having fun while being fabulous about it. Patty is a black woman who knows what she wantsâto be one of the ghostbustersâand not being shy about it.
If people hate because these Ghostbusters arenât a picture of âprettyâ, well they might as well eat dirt because these women are beautiful. These women love and trust each other. They also care about Kevin because theyâre family. They are how women in real world actually are like, not objects without brains. Also, in those movies with male leads, those men are (most of the times) not even that good looking but they get bombshell love interests. Which, isnât what happened in Ghostbusters (because if it follows those movies, Kevin will end up with one of the Ghostbusters). So, in terms of the eyecandy, Ghostbusters is better in treating their eyecandy than those movies.
People need to reflect themselves about what inequality means (and maybe read about it, because they might not even informed enough). There are such things called  internalized sexism or internalized racism which means people could be sexist and racist unconsciously. So before saying something, people should analyse themselves first. Considering if itâs an objective or just a subconscious asshole thinking.
