Being this close he could actually see the flecks of colour in his husband’s eyes. He’d always known they were a particular shade of blue/grey but being this close he could see all the different shades and he couldn’t help but smile at Bucky. A part of him knew that this was all because of the chocolate he’d eaten before Bucky came home. It just didn’t matter to him one way or another because he actually felt happy. Steve couldn’t help but wonder when the last time he’d felt that happy before but none of it mattered. He had his husband there, they had their life that they’d always talked about and everything was perfect. Even better was the fact that he’d brought him back around, he reminded him that they’d loved each other in the past and now they could love each other without any problems.
And then there was Bucky’s laugh. It was something he’d always thought about, was something he’d fallen in love with and wondered if he’d ever hear it again once they found each other. Day by day he heard more of it and each time it made him love him just a bit more. “I knew I would. If anyone could it would be me,” he teased, chasing the kiss back and stealing a proper one. Life had been rough, it had put them through hell and all of this was the reward for surviving that hell. Steve was certain the smile on his face would show Bucky just how happy he was he was home and that they were together again. “Nothing’s wrong. Can’t I just be happy you’re here with me? And that you love me?”
He watched as Bucky’s eyes flickered away from his own and a small part of him knew what his husband would find; the opened box of chocolate he’d gotten from Thor for his birthday. There were probably two or three pieces missing but only because he’d been unable to resist the temptation. Really, the fact he’d lasted as long as he had was a miracle. And yeah, he should’ve waited until Bucky came home but again that damn temptation had gotten the better of him. Plus, Steve wanted to be the one who found out the effects before he let Bucky try them. The last thing he wanted was for something bad to happen to the one thing that mattered most to him. So he tried one which became two which might’ve become three but he honestly couldn’t remember. It was so damn good, better than the chocolate he’d had from Europe and it was why he hadn’t been able to just have one piece.
None of that mattered because Bucky was there, he was home, and the rest of the day was theirs to do whatever they wanted to. And all he wanted to do was spend time with his husband. Maybe he’d even give him some of the Asgardian chocolate so they could at least enjoy all of this together. He always enjoyed the things they did together and now that they had the life they always wanted they should definitely be enjoying this together. Steve knew it meant separating and he was actually enjoying being close to Bucky again. But maybe he could handle separating for a few moments; at least long enough to grab the chocolate and come back to Bucky.
“One? Two? I think,” he said, unable to hide the amusement in his eyes. In all honesty, he couldn’t remember exactly how many pieces he had but it was enough to put him in this particular state. And what did it matter? He was happy, he had Bucky and he was happy, too. What did it matter just how many he had if he was happy? “Have I told you lately how much I love you? And that I’m happy to have you in my life again?”
The smile on Steve’s face was something Bucky loved seeing and got glimpses of far too rarely. Sure, Steve smiled every day just like any other human being, but the genuine smile that was completely Steve and usually reserved just for Bucky? Those were few and far between, more often than not. Except for under the influence of other-worldly chocolate, it seemed. And, to be honest, Bucky was okay with that. Seeing Steve this happy made Bucky happy because it was all he wanted for his husband — all he’d ever wanted for him.
Smiling as Steve kissed him again, he couldn’t help the light laugh that left him once again. “Wouldn’t be anybody but you, sweetheart.” The fact that Steve was so adamant about the whole point was beyond amusing to Bucky despite how much it had taken him by surprise. Given the fact that Steve had never once even hinted at any idea remotely related to ‘bringing Bucky around’ again while sober, it was a good clue as to just what effect the chocolate was having on him. That didn’t make it any less amusing for Bucky, nor did it mean he would be forgetting about this conversation ever.
That damn smile was contagious, there was no denying that while he stood there, Steve beaming at him like Bucky’s presence alone was the best damn thing in the whole fucking world. He couldn’t stop the smile that spread across his own lips in return. “I do love you. You know that, right?” Steve was a sap under normal circumstances — Bucky knew this. And this version of Steve was well over the usual capacity for sap Steve normally carried, but that didn’t stop Bucky from wanting to remind his husband that he did have every reason to be happy for the fact that they loved each other and that they were together and would be from now on.
“Uh huh,” Bucky nodded, knowingly, giving Steve one of his looks that said he knew his husband a little too well to be buying the claim of ‘one’ or even just ‘two’ pieces of chocolate. Bucky was surprised half the box wasn’t gone if they were that good. “Couldn’t wait for me to get home to try them, huh? Had to start without me.” He was teasing, knowing he could easily get away with it, given Steve’s current mood. And it was just as well Bucky hadn’t been there, he supposed. Things would probably get out of hand very quickly with both of them high as a kite.
Though, he couldn’t deny his curiosity was more than slightly piqued about the chocolate now, and he was tempted to try it himself at some point. For science. Given the fact that his version of the serum wasn’t as strong as Steve’s, the effect would probably be more intense for him, and he figured it would probably be wise to start with a more conservative sample than his husband had. But, in the end, with the two of them, who knew what would happen. They weren’t known for making the best decisions at all times, especially not together.
As Steve spoke again, Bucky’s smile softened, shaking his head slightly over how sweet Steve was being. Not that his husband wasn’t always sweet, but neither one of them held outstanding marks in the area of communication, and — more often than not — they communicated silently or physically, a look or a touch saying more than words every could for both of them. But now Steve was the one pouring his heart out, and Bucky brushed his fingers through Steve’s hair as he grinned, affection and amusement dancing in his eyes. “No, you definitely haven’t told me that,” he teased. “I’m happy you’re in my life again, too. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Wouldn’t be happy anywhere else but here with you.”
