Small Ways To Improve Your Life
make your bed to immediately make your room look more put together
water first, then coffee or tea
pray or meditate, even just for ten minutes, to set the tone for your day
browse the news headlines ( & read the articles that interest you when you’ve got time)
wear something you feel b o m b in
listen to music while doing your daily activities-commuting, cleaning, cooking, exercising
smile at at least two people
smile at YOURSELF
call or message someone you love
eat food that makes you feel radiant
make lists of things you need to accomplish for the day
stretch for 10 minutes
record in your phone the positive thoughts you have so you can remember them
carry water with you (always always always)
shut off your phone for an hour and have some ME time
take a hot shower or bath at the end of a stressful day
try to make plans to spend time with someone at least once a week
think about 3 things you are grateful for at the end of each day
do something calming, relaxing, and non-electronic 30 minutes before you sleep
sleep pants-less
How to Feign Your Life is Together
Have a signature accessory, clothing article, make up look, or hair style.
Have a fragrance. Make your hair scents and lotions match your perfume.
It’s okay to dine alone. Bring a book or people watch.
Love your hair. Research the best brands for your hair type and use masks weekly.
Your nails don’t need to be fancy, but keep them maintained.
Stay worldly. Know works of art, artists, designers, films, books, politicians. Spend your lunch break reading the paper or a magazine.
Crying is not a weapon. It’s okay to feel your emotions, but never use them as an excuse to avoid your problems.
Jealousy is boring. Love and appreciate others. If you can’t love them, forget them.
Boost others. Flatter others, but don’t deprecate yourself in the process.
Don’t sulk. Don’t let the whole world know your problems. If you don’t want someone to give their opinion, don’t share your situation.
Your life is between you and the universe. Don’t post your personal matters for others to see.
Don’t emotionally blackmail others. They hurt you? Let them know and then move on. It’s between the two of you and not the world.
Cook dinner. Cook dinner and listen to music, the radio, or a podcast.
Treat yourself to candles and flowers. Be your own cheerleader.
Take naps. Take a cat nap on a Sunday afternoon with the blinds open and the fan on high.
Drink your water, eat your vegetables. Take care of your body.
Never have time to take off your jewelry before bed, but always have time to take off your makeup. Your nighttime skin regime is important.
Mystery is beautiful. You don’t need to reveal much of or about yourself.
Never appear other than as you are. Don’t lie about yourself. Embrace who you are at your core.
a piece of advice my dad gave me and I’ve never forgotten is, “if you won’t worry about it in 4 months, don’t worry about it now.” saved me countless times, it’s a philosophy to adopt and help improve your life. Failed a test? ask yourself if you’ll think about this still in 4 months? Made a fool of yourself in public? I doubt even the people who saw it will remember it past today. Know you could have done better? Ran further? don’t beat yourself up over it, you can do better tomorrow. Don’t overthink things, a lot of negatives matter less than you think they do.

Writing the Common App Essay: Part 1
See part 2, part 3, and part 4!
I made it my goal to have a polished draft of my common app essay before the start of my senior year, and I’m so glad that I did. Writing my main essay over the summer made the fall a lot easier, and allowed me to focus on supplement essays, interviews, retaking the SAT and ACT, and meeting the deadlines for my 6 EA applications.
Writing the common app essay is a daunting task, and I approached it with a lot of fear and anxiety. Eventually, I forced myself to sit down at my computer and not get up until I had written an essay about something.
Here are my tips for starting the process: 1. Make a list of ten things that mean something to you. Passions, causes, moments, stories, people… anything goes. Just write them down.
2. Pick your five favorites.
3. Write for ten minutes about each one of those topics. It doesn’t have to be great; you can basically word-vomit onto the page. Don’t erase or delete anything. Just get the juices flowing.
4. After you’ve done this, you should have a decent idea of the potential of each of your topics. There’s probably one or two topics that you find yourself wanting to write more about. Pick one and run with it.
5. Write. Don’t worry about addressing a specific prompt yet; just tell a story about a topic that means something to you. Make it personal, and make it interesting.
6. Congratulations! You have written about something. Now, go look at the prompts. How can you manipulate what you’ve written to answer one of those questions? The first prompt is definitely your friend here; it’s so open-ended that your baby essay will probably answer it pretty well.
7. Once you’ve identified a prompt, go back and tweak your essay a little bit to address the prompt you chose.
Huzzah! You have a draft of your essay. Since you’ve started so early, you have time to forget about it for a while. Save, exit, and come back in a few weeks—you’ll have a fresh eye for editing!
Good luck, and happy writing :)
