During storms/hurricances, why do local and national news programs tell you not to go outside, then cut to a reporter outside?

So I got an antenna for local channels, and a streaming service for sports.  Just missed one channel... (Happy note:  They put the shark shows online after they aired)

This cracks me up every time.  I have had some LARGE boxes placed under mats.
