Honestly I always imagined he took either the seventh off both sides of sixth and seventh on one side to make breathing harder, and also because it's mentioned as a visible change. And also that's the middle of the ribcage, it'd be so inconvenient.

Did you know it's actually the ribcage that expands when we breathe? The muscles between them expand and contract, making the lungs expand or deflate, not the other way around. With the ribs around the middle of the ribcage removed I imagine it'd make breathing just that bit harder, which would be just the wrong thing to happen just before Jon goes into the Coffin.

Then again we don't hear much change in breathing or complaints about the pain so maybe he goes for the floaters.

But in the immortal Garden Jared mentions he felt a rib being weird so I'd assume it's *not* a floater, however that may work when you're Jared.
