Something was beneath him. What is it? He’s not quite sure. His body — did he still have one? — feels like it’s being weighed down by lead. Limbs desperately try to move until his hand twitches at his side. It takes a few more tries for his fingers to start working. Slowly, they touch the thing he’s laying on while his brain plays catch-up…

Dirt, stones and… some grass?

He couldn’t be dead. Dead men couldn’t feel like this. Corpses didn’t wiggle their fingers like this. Fortunately for him, the haze of his mind gradually begins to lift, enabling him enough clarity to drag his body out of the freezing water. He doesn’t make it far before collapsing face first into the ground, exhaustion easily seeping into his aching bones. Already, he was drifting back into unconsciousness…

She remembers how awful he is at swimming. He thrashes everywhere, splashing everything around him and leaving them with a puddle of water. She remembers how something about it is endearing, and even though she can’t teach him and keep him from feeling like he’s drowning, she floats with him.

She remembers how she taught him to fill up his lungs and sit on the river, just letting the water hold them up as the two of them talk for hours and hours.

She never wanted to hurt him.

He’s almost like a little brother to her. A small child with the world in front of him, full of optimism and naïveté, never thinking that the world is evil and cruel. She wonders how anyone could live like that.

She hates that he has to die.

She doesn’t know what came over her. Never did she imagine saving him. Jumping into the river after him.

She used to sit waiting and seething for the day he just gave back that damned necklace, but he never did. Trading identities with Iris, just so she could get the freedom she wished for so badly. The damn necklace.

The poisoned pills, the anger and hatred she felt. And the way she never hated him at all.

She waits for him while he rests. Watching over him like a guardian angel. Observing his chest rise and fall as the river flows and crashes into rocks.

Some things never change.

Finally, almost too slowly she realizes his eyes are opening.

“Feenie?”

Her voice is soft, and she’s more asking for herself more than for him.

wow. i did not mean to just disappear like that. mental health stuff got bad, so i couldn’t really handle being online and couple that with classes kicking my ass, but i’m back for real now! i promise! my only responsibilities are law school apps, and i can do those between replies.

“…I should disagree, but…” Even without finishing, she agrees. Well, not with the murder bit, specifically, but with the feeling of how terrible he was to them. They’re so much better without him…without their mother.

The twins, forever.

“You’ve always been gentle. I don’t know how you do it.” Dahlia was always jealous of Iris’s ability to remain soft, even in such a cruel world.

Dahlia lets out a small smile and then nods. Not to say that Dahlia would kill her father, they are family after all, but it’s not like he would win any father of the year awards. She wondered what would be different if they weren’t raised in such environments.

“I’m glad you’re okay.”

Is all she says.

Fading to Dust

Send me ‘Fading to Dust’ for my muses reaction to watching yours die right in front of them.

It had started with lunch. Eating together for the first time in awhile, having had a long conversation earlier catching up. What Dahlia had been up to, how Iris had been faring… What had they missed in the other’s life? If anything, Iris was just happy to be with her twin again.

It felt like when they were kids again… A biting remark that had her giggling in shock and scolding with a, “Dahlia!” that she didn’t at all mean. It had all warmed her to the core.

Dahlia had brought a bento box from home and Iris had prepared food before she left Hazakura Temple, so they had seat out with a blanket and had a picnic among the best view Hazakura had to offer.

It’s just that… Then Dahlia started to cough. Gentle at first, then harsh. Until her hand pulled away…and Iris saw blood on Dahlia’s palm. She looked up in horror, trying to understand… Why…?

“Hah!”

Was she for real? He couldn’t believe what he was hearing! She never wanted to hurt him? She would still be alive if he had given the necklace back? Did she really believe what she was spouting?

The look on his face says it all. He was absolutely bewildered! Mouth moving, trying to find the appropriate words, the ex-lawyer shakes his head. This woman was really something else. And that wasn’t a compliment.

“You came here because you want me to understand?” Delusional! That’s what she was! How did she expect him to sit here and listen to her try and justify all that she had done. Mind racing at a million miles a minute, he sighs and places both feet solidly on the ground as if he were readying himself to rise out of his chair.

“You did so many terrible crimes, Dahlia. Why should I even listen to you right now?” What would be the point?

She didn’t expect him to believe her, she wouldn’t believe herself. But it was the truth. She never meant to hurt him - hurt anyone. She was just tired, and didn’t know what else to do.

Of course it wasn’t an excuse, but she didn’t mean for any of this to happen.

“Yes. I understand you’re not going to want to talk. I wouldn’t want to talk to me either, I hurt... a lot of people. A lot.” she thinks about how she murdered her own step sister, in cold blood just to cover her own tracks. Sure, she was scared, but she murdered and that wasn’t something people just understand.

Even if it was to protect yourself.

“Because you’re not someone who holds grudges. You’re fair, and honest. And you always want to find the truth.”

She wasn’t trying to flatter him. That’s the reason she ended up taking so long to hurt him in the first place, something about him seemed to draw her in. Captivate her.

He reminded her of Iris. Honest. Good. Forgiving.

“Abuse.”

She said it simply again.
