It was quite rare nowadays that such positions were offered! Especially in the paper. Lenora had thought that this Mr. Wright must be one of those old-money sort of gentleman, perhaps getting on in his years -- but no. No, that was not the case.
She always did a little detective work before applying for such a position, although she didn’t really have to do much! The man’s reputation preceded him: A successful lawyer from America, known for revolutionizing the justice system there and his fierce and cut-throat ways in the courtroom! The Turnabout Terror, he was called, despite how much of his work brought about a lot of good. How interesting!
Well, lawyers tended to have a poor reputation right off the bat solely for their career paths. Perhaps she could assist in the raising of his child(ren?) and ease that burden! So long as he proved to be a kind man, of course. Cruel parents were often adjusted when Lenora came to their employ.
She checked the note she had written for herself, making sure the address matched the one of the house before her. Sure, the request had been to contact first, but speaking in person was a form of contact, too! And if her potential employer couldn’t handle this, it was possible he wouldn’t be able to handle her other quirks as well.
Slim fingers curled into the knocker of the front door and struck it against its striking plate thrice. There was some shuffling and she used this opportunity to adjust her hair -- before and older woman approached the door, her hairline perhaps an inch too high. Mrs. Wright? No, perhaps not.
“Good afternoon,” she greeted politely, lowering said note in her hand. “I’m here about the position in the paper.”
“Oh!” The woman looked genuinely surprised, and then gave a grin. “Well, aren’t you just adorable! I told him the paper ad would do it -- come in, my dear. My name is Quina, I’m the maid here. Mr. Wright! Mr. Wright!”
