The Shadow Crystals are only special in the Dark Worlds
Of course, this isn't entirely true, as the equivalent of the Shadow Crystals in the Light World seems to give us glimpses of the future/an alternate reality (in both cases, seemingly showing us Weird Route-adjacent context).
But, I think it is very easy to overlook how world-breaking the power of a Shadow Crystal IN THE DARK WORLD SPECIFICALLY actually is.
Sure they give us some visions of a time that has not yet happened in Hometown in the Light World, but in the Dark World, they literally allow whoever is watching through them to see the higher plane of reality to the one they're currently in
This is not "just" being able to see another version of reality, this is literally seeing the higher reality in which the GODS of this world resides
And, it is quite interesting to notice that, unlike other items like the BlackShard (or the Egg but we don't talk about the Egg) that stays exactly the same in the Dark and Light World, or other swords like the Spooky Sword that DOES turn into something else, a pencil, BUT keeps its main attribute of "being spooky" by turning into a Halloween Pencil, the Shadow Crystal seems to be changing drastically from its Dark World form to its Light World form.
More specifically, it is still GLASS, but, the Light World version seems to be entirely devoid of shadow.
The "Shadow Crystal' simply becomes a piece of "Glass", with no mention of any darkness, or anything related to darkness like water. It seems that whatever the process the items go through when we switch realities from the Dark World to the Light World led the Shadow Crystal to "lose" its shadowy attribute, for some reason.
But, let's think about an hypothetical right now.
In DR, the main duality is between darkness and light, right.
We have the Shadow Crystals, which are basically pieces of glass that can fit in one's hand and which seem to be made of literal shadow, as they are described as such with an emphasis on their water-like appearance, which further connect the way they look to darkness. And, for some reason, looking through it allows us to see a higher plane of existence.
Cool! But, I think it is worth pointing out that this same quality of transdimensional perception is LOST once the Crystal is being brought to the Light World, alongside any mention of darkness of shadow surrounding it, simply becoming "glass".
The ability to see another reality is lost at the same time the Shadow Crystal becomes the simple Glass (and "Shadow Crystal" could be just described "Shadow Glass", as crystals are all glass. the Light World counterpart of that item REALLY just dropped the "shadow" part of it)
Could it mean that the Shadow in the form of a Crystal is the thing allowing us to see the Light World while being in the Dark World?
A glass emanating shadow being a window to another reality...
that sounds far-fetched. especially given that the "dark" is the thing that is linked to fiction : the Dark Worlds are born from the dark, why would looking at a Crystal made out of darkness give us a glimpse of the world "above" basking in light?
That doesn't change, however, that the facts are there : the Shadow Crystals, in their shadowy forms and NOT in their simple glass forms, allow us to see the Light World, a higher plane of existence. how and why, idk, but that's what they do.
Im wondering tho, if a Shadow Crystal exists within DR, in a world in which everything is defined by the duality between light and dark, could a Light Crystal exist?
It would be, like, glass in which instead of seeing shadow you would see light, and through which you wouldn't see the plane of existence that is more real than the one you're currently in, but the one that is considered like fiction compared to the one you're currently in-
That's a computer screen.
Glass of light with the opposite effect of the Shadow Crystals.
This is the main idea of the post, I'm going to freestyle a bit more about all of this but I mainly just wanted to share the thought that our computer screens, made out of glass, and emitting light, AND showing us a reality that is more fictive than ours, ARE the "Light Crystals" opposite of the Shadow Crystals, made out of glass, looking like shadows, and showing us a reality that is more real than the Dark World.
PS : (there are so many things to say about this, especially what it could imply in regards to the Prophecy that is said to be both dark and light in nature, the words being "light" but its content being "dark", and it being written on glass, but talking about that would recquire to talk about why "light=what can be perceived=what is defined=reality" and "dark=what cannot be seen=what is not defined=potential=imagination=fiction", and because Andrew Cunningham still hasn't talked about it i can't assume this is common knowledge for the fandom and i DON'T have the time to explain all of that (YET), but YES i am thinking about all of it while writing this I KNOW!!! JUST- BEAR WITH ME HERE OKAY WE'LL GET THROUGH THIS /lh)
however. with that in mind, im actually very scared of what the Shadow Crystals could be able to do. "seeing the higher plane of existence" is all fun and game, until the higher plane of existence is OURS.
We're lucky that the Shadow Crystals aren't shadowy anymore in the Light World, or else maybe Kris could have seen our ugly faces while looking through it!
i'm unsure if the "PureCrystal", supposedly the fusion between all the Shadow Crystals, could form a glass that would STILL be made out of shadows in the Light World... i mean, it's possible, but the wording of the description make me feel like "the cat" "purifying" the crystals isn't going to make them "darker", but lighter instead.
After all, the word "purified" has only been used one other time in the game and it was in direct relation to light (directly heavenly light even, but that's another debate)
so, what, is "the cat" (Seam. it's Seam. just say Seam) going to make the Shadow Crystals... lighter? why? i mean i guess having a "Light Crystal" gives you some kind of power over a fictional world because you're the "realer" entity looking inside a fictional world, but why would we/Kris want that, as Seam seems to imply we/they do? or maybe im missing something or not understanding something.
or maybe the wording is just coincidental and Seam is actually going to make the Shadow Crystals darker, and in that case yeah i guess Kris probably would want to be able to see past their own reality and into the plane of existence in which the person controlling them lives. that would make sense.
I would find that cool too, so Seam's ambiguous speech about we/Kris enjoying whatever they have in store for us/them could work either way.
anyway that's all i have to say for now on that topic i think.
i thought about it a few hours ago after being inspired by a friend who himself got inspired by the latest Cunningham's video (of course!) so i know i probably didn't go deep enough and didn't point out all the ways this concept could be used in interesting ways to analyze stuff in DR, but i figured that might as well share the initial idea and see if people have things to say about it
no well-spoken conclusion, have the exchange that started it all
