Honestly with the new information about FRIEND I am kind of starting doubt the tail of hell interpretation, but I do feel like there is something going on with FRIEND's tail because, look at Pluey.

Pluey's tail has a mouth on it. What makes this is interesting is that the Mikes are all based on existing Mike theories at the time, as obvious with Pluey being Friend!Mike, BUT there were no theories that involved Mike's or Friend's tail having a mouth. This has the interesting implication that Pluey's tail is taken from FRIEND's actual design.

What do you think of the connection Kris has to trees?

Not sure how much of it is a Kris thing specifically. It's more that they have these broader symbolic meanings that all seem to coalesce with Kris.

Off the dome, the ways in which they have been used so far are:

As blockades. They make up most of the "border" around Hometown and the Island Boards. They even seem to be the basic/default blockades in Mantle, as even in locations where plant-based blockades aren't thematically fitting they still appear, specifically ones that resemble the autumnal Hometown trees. And of course they serve as a mental block for Kris.

They exemplify this "As above, so below"-type idea, or rather represent a connection to the "below." They're in that "ROOTS" prophecy panel for a reason—they're like a surface view or a hand reaching up from it.

They have to do with memory in general. Trees can be quite old, sometimes being a symbol of the passage of time itself. They chronicle their own history through their inner rings. Oh and "The axe forgets; the tree remembers." proverb is probably relevant, as we're definitely supposed to be thinking about the relationship between trees and axes.
