I talked about the esports side of MCSR takeover in my previous post but I think this expansion into narrative work is just as sick by the way! When I say this I am probably reaching an audience that doesn't need to be told this twice, but there is so much interesting storytelling potential in Minecraft and getting the speedrunner's take on it is both a great move in terms of expanding audience and creative intrigue.

If this becomes a bigger thing, it will be interesting to see how MCSR goes about the 4th wall, metanarrative stuff, etc. vs. stuff like Whitepine, Parkour/PVP Civ, whatever Ish got up to, Kenadian/Wato/Wifies, Lifesteal, etc. and all those distinct storytelling traditions. (Woah, that's a lot! Someone should write a comp lit paper on this. Not me tho.)

To elaborate on main: I think this is really, really good for the health of the esport (because that's what Ranked is)! Is it fun to be able to cheer for a Doogile or a Lowkey to dominate the entire pack? Yeah if you're a fan of Doogile or Lowkey. To make a VCT comparison it's like watching prime Envy/Optic vs. Loud. You're there for El Classico, but everything else can feel kind of meh or irrelevant in comparison. You don't get super invested into the ecosystem as a wholle.

But when you can really cheer for anyone in the RO16 or even LCQ, suddenly being a fan and believing your pick can win becomes much more accessible to a lot more people, especially if you and they are both newcomers to the scene. It also gives those runners a lot more exposure. It's like VCT LCQ back when they still had those, or EG's miracle run in franchising: suddenly people are invested in the whole scene, because "the best" is no longer a forgone conclusion.

Of course this probably matters in a different way (I hesitate to say less?) for an esport like Ranked vs. one like VCT, since unlike Valorant there's no skins to buy/etc. that keep the competitive ecosystem going. The translation from "this player is cool" to "I will buy something to support them" is in some ways less direct because of that, but it's also more direct in a way since it funnels people straight into their streams (presumably with a monetary benefit).

Also it's really funny to me how the schedule was compressed because everyone's a lot faster now than they were previously...only for the timesave to get completely destroyed because there's only so fast you can go before differences start to become vanishingly small and matches to become harrowingly close. I mean, can't fault Oliver for this, because I also didn't expect it, but it's interesting the way things like this turn out!
