Cambodia Diary turned 2 today!
Back with fam (at Palm Springs, California)
This women is beautiful, happy, helpful, and strong. She lived through the Khmer Rouge which could have destroyed anyone's hope. Not Bong Samnaeng. She has worked internationally for the UN as well as locally for NGO's. Now she is the Country Director for Harpswell Foundation and a new role model for me. #cambodia #harpswellfoundation #courage #empowerment #whorunstheworld
Same same, but different 🌺🌼👋byeee students 😔Hello next adventure!
I'm going to miss running red lights. Traffic may be a pain, But secretly I feel like a child, Freely playing, not thinking about consequences. I'm excited to see my family. That beautiful nephew of mine; Photos do him justice, But I know I'm going To explode With love and joy When I hold and hear him. The food here has been a variety from fish heads to delicious cake. The people have been distant. I never really integrated like I did in Morocco. However, my little sisters have my heart. I want those young women to become leaders. I wish only good to all the students I taught. The city is full of cafes and place to sit. I hope I find comfort when I go back home. I like being no one, except the girl who looks different. I like freedom of responsibility. I like my schedule, naps, & low-stress life style. If I can find peace in the United States, I'll stick around a little longer. I'm scared I've seen such differences, I don't know what is "right" any more. I'm aware litter, unemployment, and discrimination are wrong, But what is the best way to live? The students I worked with laughed more than any students I've ever seen. I was confused and sometimes frustrated by there oblivion, but they enjoyed life. They felt their blessings And appreciated what the world gave them. I hope to find appreciation and strength. I knew I'd learn lessons, but I never thought I'd self reflect so much. Thank goodness for Mohamed who has listened everyday. The point is, I've seen beauty in people and their world. I want the world and people to see my beauty. Not in the selfie kind of of beauty, but the kind that build hopes and believes in dreams and wants goodness. Cheers to the next journey.
Steps to a great future
New students arrived with their parents for our Welcoming Day. As Leadership Residents our main role was to smile and of course greet families and students. The day was filled with inspirational speeches, truly like an American college freshman orientation. There was food, contract signing, and room placement. Towards the end of the afternoon and into the evening , one by one parents left and just the students were together. Naps and laughs preoccupied our time until dinner together outside. We got to play get-to-know-you games and smiled at our similarities and even laughed at our differences. Thank to the lovely Executive Director we ended our night with ice cream.
In the morning we ate breakfast together and decided to play sports at the local volleyball court. Men were already playing, so we rented the ball for $1 and walked 5 minutes down the road to a beautiful pagoda.
The new students are slowly being introduced to our Harspwell community and life styles. We will start English assessments with them and find new ways to adapt to their needs.
The overall feeling is welcoming and celebrating education.
Beautiful women inside and out #harpswellfoundation #cambodia

To my 2 weeks left: thanks.
Two weeks left, and when the other teacher says “You’re leaving soon.” All I can think of is vacation, and how if you had 2 weeks , you wouldn’t get there on the first day and say “Oh, vacations almost over.”
So, I am here continuing my duties and trying to make the best of my days. However, this morning started a little different than most days. Yes, I had my dollar iced coffee, but when I brought it to the weekly Leadership Meeting, the executive director was there.
I knew she was coming, I made sure to wear an outfit both work appropriate and good for riding my bike back home. I had seen her face when we skyped. But this time was the first time in person to meet her and share my progress. Honestly, I tried not to complain about my struggles, because I realized something. All work or volunteering takes effort. Some effort may be screen time all day or internal meetings, or evening phone conversations with customers. I thought this volunteer position was going to be easy. So, when it takes effort I sometimes forget-that it is normal.
Talking about all the potential of the program is also tricky, because I want to come off pragmatic and efficient. Except, I still talked about the importance of scheduling fun activities for Halloween.
So I was a little confused on how I would approach the meeting, but when it came my turn to share my agenda, I was able to remain myself. I needed suggestions on some aspects and also had suggestions. I was able to praise my efforts and also reflect on what could have worked better.
I still have time here so I’m not throwing in the towel yet.
Which takes me to a point I want to remember. I had a bright student in the beginning who would try to meet with me often. Then as days came and went she stopped needing me. At one point she even suggested I speak less direct to students. I was embarrassed and thought I ruined an educational opportunity. I was about to seek her out and ask about our non-meetings until I saw she signed up. I was relieved maybe I didn’t burn that bridge. But the meeting time came and she was a no show. The next day she apologized for missing- the traffic was bad. I did not mind.
Because in the library a few days later, she asked me for help on an essay.
I remembered to keep my tone sweet and my smile up. The cultural may be different and views of different behaviors can help or hurt a relationship.
She thanked me for my help.
All is okay in the world with patience and a smile.
I think the best thing I am learning is to change who I am. Not everything, but the things that should be improved are. So I am happy for 2 more weeks of learning.
Well, that concludes Job Skills! It was an awesome and informative curriculum sharing all things work related #professionalism #resume #ethics #howtointerview & more 🙏🏿 (at Harpswell Dormitory)
basic.
Just a Monday check in, because the week was so good it must be recorded.Saturday was rainy and peaceful. I was able to nap to help get my sinuses to calm down. We had a dance instructor come in for our afternoon and it was FABULOUS. I used to dance as a child, so I was in my element flipping my head, poppin’ my hip, and turning on a dime. However, Sunday I woke up with a sore neck. Guess I’m getting a little old.Sunday was a day for the girls. A fellow teacher moved into a new apartment and invited me, and two other girls my age over.
She had a rooftop pool
I’ve seen photos of people swimming in a pool over looking a city, but I have never been one of those stars- but now I am in the club!
We also ordered food, and even though the fries were cold and the pasta came with a raw egg I cracked thinking it was hard boil (weird), it was a delightful time.
When I left with the other two girls we had to stop to get ice cream. The streets were so busy, no surprise there, but we made it to Blue Pumpkin. But then we walked to another place to get cronuts( have croissant half doughnut). The place was closed, so we walked back to the Blue Pumpkin. I did not mind getting my steps in, because I haven’t for a while. I enjoyed my coconut/ rocky road ice cream.
Even more, I enjoy the time with my new friends.
Now Monday is coming to an end, but I still must be thankful for the days with no pool or girl talk. I am still thankful for a job, students learning, and my loved ones.
I never get bored of a sunset
Settling in
I act tough and think I'm healthy. However, I believe this sinus headache that is making my face hurt and neck stiff is winning. So, I'm in bed recapping my week.
First was Nerd Night. The Cambodian students who attended with me said "I was outside my comfort zone...", "I like to see how tourist act...", and " I was tired, but I enjoyed it." Seeing how others behave and public speak and learning about something new was my intention for girls and I think they got it. Moon Fest was amazing! Talk about a holiday! The moon was large, the decorations were bright, and the prayers were said. We got to eat a funny type of Chinese cake as well. My favorite part was being outside around the table of offering and incense in hand. The girls sang in Khmer and I continued to pray. The director made wished for all of us to be as bright and strong as the moon. These type of activities and celebrations move my soul, I appreciate them so much. I have stepped out of PE and into a 1st grade class. The school is...well, it means well, but honestly it is unorganized. We had a graduation ceremony that lasted 2 hours and the kids were expected to stay seated the whole time. I should not complain, because I know the teachers are trying there best. I am also grateful for this experience. I'm looking forward to another Nerd Night were *I* will present (inshallah). My job skills curriculum is in its last week! I'm excited for the learning going on there. Things are good. Things are not bad. Thank god. And I am taking things in with a smile. And sometimes and smirk.
Sundays are for family and rest
I guess everyone eventually has a moment where they realize they just quoted their mother. Or they pass on ideas to friends or students their father once shared with them. I was unaware how much I was soaking in while growing up. I bet my family also bet I wasn't listening. But I was. When a student comes to me a tad sick, but more just needing attention, I tell her to drink water. My moms favorite medicine was water and sunshine. This morning I had the pleasure of being the "supervisor" in the kitchen. I was making an American breakfast with bacon, scrambled eggs, toast, and fruit, the other teacher did the mandatory pancakes. My dad usually jokes calling himself the supervisor while I do the labor. I woke up at 6:20 to have breakfast ready by 7:30. Alone in the kitchen I sipped my hot coffee and started the bacon. I may add there was no skillet so there was a slight challenge. However, the point is around 7 the girls woke up and creeped into the kitchen. I love being solo, but eventually the coffee kicked it and I welcomed the girls to scramble the eggs or butter the toast, and cut the fruit. I was so happy to spend time with them doing something we love-eating! Well, cooking first. When we got into our groove I had to smile and think "This must be what my dad feels like when my brothers and I are home cooking breakfast together." Having helpers that look up to you for advice on the amount of milk to use or how much fruit should be cut is so easy and enjoyable I answer their questions with delight. I am slightly older than the university students here, but I still felt like a proud parent sharing memories together. After breakfast I rode my bike to church. I recognised my grandparents taught me about faith and brought me to church many times. I am so thankful for the family I was given. I hope I continue to live with the positive and good morals they taught me as well as adapting new ideas into my thought process. 1 more month and I will be in moving on in my journey... Inshallah God willing
Living is more than just the space I occupy. Two months in Cambodia as a Leadership Resident has given me another perspective to what is important in life. The walls cannot contain all the memories I making!
It's silly to think two months can impact my life when I see a fellow PCV just ending her service of almost three years. "Now that's something to be proud of and will be difficult to readjust to." Is what I want to say/think. And I do, however I am determined to stop comparing and stop judging. So, I consciously have to focus my attention and brain power to my life. Everyday I wake up in Phnom Penh I get a coffee. After a week of holiday expenses I am down to my last dollars until October 1. Discipline- as minimal as this dilemma may sound, I am reminded the importance of discipline. If I am not, then my student loans, health insurance, and savings may be in jeopardy of my careless ways and wants. Which then brings me to reflect another thing. Taking it easy. I have been on this journey and constantly talk to my two favorite males. My dad and Mohamed, my partner. Whether they are reminding me to smile or recapping their days I am reminded to stop taking life so serious and appreciate the simplicity. The finally thing I want to write about is my professional experience. That is why I am here right? Yesterday while teaching the PE class I was unsure if the students understood my directions. It was a team building game and the classroom teacher saw me and suggest we demonstrate first. Of course! I love playing and should have done this first. It was a moderate success, but at the end of class the classroom teacher said "good job." I am learning to be patient with the kiddos and myself. I try to channel teachers who I know have great management and compassion. Even after Sunday service I told myself to find God in each of these children. Treat them with respect and love. It sounds silly, and if you know me I am just a tad silly. The best for last is my Harpswell students. The girls challenge me to lead discussions deeper, stay awake longer, experience more, and stretch my teaching ability. Yesterday we went to a local German owned culture center to watch a documentary on counterfeit prescription drugs. The three girls who attended were chemistry majors and one enjoyed film. I went along for the ride, but enjoyed seeing the girls choose how they spend their time. Back inside the dorm, the girls are fairly independent. I am still doing tutoring 1-1 sessions and yesterday a student and I cracked up while trying to pronounce the word "survive" the correct way. I did it right of course ;-) The current event discussions and job skill curriculum is so thrilling, because I get to make it my own. I try to be direct in my expectations, but also give the girls free range to be creative and give as much effort as their motivation allows. Does two months influence my life? Maybe not the exact time itself, but I know certain moments in and out of class are meant to share the peace, simplicity, and knowledge of life. Where the future takes all of us I hope we can enjoy the journey.
