I know it sounds fake but you really do have a lot of silent lovers on this planet who look at you and wish they had your smile or your hair color or your humor or your intellect or your intentions or your heart, your manners, your eyes, your ease, even just you. People who are too shy to tell you what they admire about you or what they wish for you or who they see themselves becoming bc of you & they’re too shy to tell you. even tho it isn’t verbalized, the universe has still heard and the universe has loved you for helping out on its creations. My job no longer exists. I’ve been given a tentative traveling elementary resource position I don’t know what I want to do anymore.

West Virginia teachers just shut down the ENTIRE STATES SCHOOLS.

They went on strike.

They worked with churches, community centers, and food banks to make sure that students who rely on school to be a safe place or for a meal will still be able to get them.

They are one of the lowest funded states for education. Many teachers working retail and food service on the weekends.

They can’t properly make lesson plans when they can’t feed their own children.

They can’t teach all day to kids after working all night to pay bills.

They can’t watch their students education suffer because they are not being paid enough to live.

They are demanding better funding to schools.

They are demanding pay raises.

They are demanding better health benefits.

They are demanding the safety of their students.

Students in multiple counties led a support system for their teachers. Wearing purple to support them and hyping up social media.

More information. WV teachers are the 48th-lowest paid in the country and are looking at only 1-2% raises over the next few years. (Vox)

My mom was a teacher and still works in the public schools. My dad volunteers at the same school. I support teachers, and I support teachers doing what they have to do to get the salaries and benefits they need and deserve.

I’ve felt completely overwhelmed by paperwork since moving to my new job. Recently, at a PLC meeting, my coworker mentioned that she would do everything in Word and then transfer it to the IEP document at the last minute. This tip has been LIFE CHANGING. I feel like it has helped me feel less overwhelmed and able to track more. I’m so grateful that it came up in conversation.

I came home with a migraine today.

When I went to drop off an answer key for the worksheet my coteacher and I were assigning as review, I knew I had to go home.

His class was an average amount of chatty and working, and I knew that our class would be just as chatty if not louder (they’re typically of higher volume around lunch) and my migraine could not handle it. I spent the first half of the day sitting in near darkness due to light sensitivity, too.

YooperBoy is home sick, too. He’s working from home today, but was out of commission yesterday.

Here’s to hoping I nipped it before it was anything too awful.

Today was exhausting. It’s hard to keep your cool when you have a kid who straight up lies to your face. I’m grateful for students who know my “mom eyes” and call their friends out for not keeping their word to me.

Checking My Privilege

@edukaition and I were able to spend the day watching La La Land, snuggling with my pup, drinking too much coffee, and catching up because local schools were closed. A transmission water main broke around 6 last night and isn’t expected to be fixed for another couple of days.

Water is being gouged in price ($19/case!) and the affordably priced water has flown from shelves.

I have had to boil water, let it cool, and store it for cooking and consuming. But you know what? That’s okay. It’s all okay. Because water will be restored in a few days and all will return to normal.

Flint, MI, however? They STILL don’t have clean and safe water and it has been YEARS!

I’m checking my privilege because I’m one of the lucky few. I know I have clean, safe water. I know order will be restored. I’m not going to complain that I have to boil water for a few days, because at least that’s all it takes for my water to be safe.

Do you have any tips or guidance around holding students accountable for SSR?

Don’t.  Let them read.  Incentivizing and making it punitive doesn’t work.

Encourage choice! Have options for all. A friend of mine donated comic books to my classroom and my reluctant readers ate them up!
