( daniel henney, male, he/him ) HARK! I believe the heralds are announcing the arrival of MARON MARTELL NEE FOWLER, the 47 year old, PRINCE CONSORT of SUNSPEAR. They are known to hold loyalty towards DORNE & THEIR HOUSE & THEMSELVES and little birds sing of them being & POSITIVE TRAIT. ii. background & personality
Born the fifteenth day of the second moon, 26 BC, the last child of the Lord and Lady of Skyreach, arriving so many years behind his sister Jynessa that the two of them were raised almost as different generations under the same roof. Jynessa was already a young woman grown, promised, and preparing for the weight of the succession by the time Maron was still learning to walk the sunlit halls of Skyreach.
This gap in years meant Maron never quite occupied the role of "little brother", instead he grew up trailing after Jynessa's own children, closer in age to his niblings than to his sister, more playmate than uncle, more shadow than elder.
Anders, Jynessa's firstborn, was the one who idolised Maron most fiercely as a boy. Where other households might have bred rivalry between an heir and his uncle, Skyreach bred something gentler: a boy who wanted only to keep pace with his uncle, to prove himself worthy of standing beside him one day as a sworn sword rather than a mere uncle watching from the walls.
Maron took to the blade the way some men take to prayer, with a discipline that unsettled his tutors, who had expected the pampered restlessness of a highborn boy and found instead something closer to devotion. He was knighted young, earlier than most, and it was whispered (quietly, in the manner Dornish households whisper most things) that this was less a reward for skill and more his father's attempt to give a fourth-in-line-to-nothing some purpose beyond waiting. Purpose found him regardless. He took service as a sworn sword to House Martell not long after, a common enough arrangement between the great houses of Dorne, and it was there, guarding a young princess barely older than himself, that the true shape of his life began to reveal itself.
Princess Deria Martell had been promised since childhood, as princesses so often are, and Maron came to know her not as a woman to be courted but as a woman to be protected, a distinction he clung to with the stubbornness that would come to define him. The chemistry between them was, by every account that survives in old letters and older gossip, immediate and entirely inconvenient. Two people built from the same clay, sharing the same iron principles, the same quiet humor, the same terrible habit of putting duty before their own hearts.
Neither acted on it. Not when she wed Lord Yorick Yronwood. Not when her husband, as was custom and not without her own tacit understanding, kept paramours of his own. Not through the births of her children, nor the long years of war, nor the thousand small moments where a lesser man might have pressed his advantage. Maron simply stood. Through the First Dornish War, through council chambers and childbirths and grief, he stood at her shoulder and called it duty, and if anyone in Sunspear ever doubted the true name of that duty, no one was foolish enough to say so within his hearing.
While Maron built his quiet, unspoken life in Sunspear, Skyreach carried on without him, Jynessa ruling as she always had, steady and unremarkable. By 10 AC, Anders Fowler had come into his inheritance as Lord of Skyreach, young and untested and eager to prove Skyreach's teeth were as sharp as any other Dornish house's during the long grinding years of the Dornish War.
What he chose to prove it with was Nightsong. Whether it was strategy or fury or simply the recklessness of a young lord newly given command, Anders led the burning of the Caron seat and took hostages from among its household, a brutality that shocked even a war already known for cruelty on both sides.
It did not go unanswered. Anders was killed for what he'd done, whether by Caron loyalists, by Targaryen order, or by some combination of both depending on which telling one credits, and Skyreach lost its heir before he'd had the chance to become anything more than the boy who burned Nightsong.
The Targaryens did not let the matter rest with Anders alone. In retaliation for Nightsong, dragonflame was turned on Skyreach itself, and Jynessa Fowler, Ruling Lady, mother, and sister to Maron, died in the burning that followed. With Anders dead and Jynessa gone, Skyreach passed to her second child, already grown and of age.
It was two years after, in a war-shadowed brush with death that spared them both by margins neither cared to examine too closely, that Deria finally said the thing she had spent twenty years not saying. Maron, who had made an art of patience, did not need to be asked twice.
(the rest is wip, this shit took a long time)
