colours. there are colours everywhere, filling his eyes and making his heart beat faster. the skate park is one of his regular haunts, something comforting about it, especially at night when sleep avoids his company. it’s, “beautiful,” and he doesn’t realise he says it out loud, his rasp of a voice dropping bluntly into the air around him. his skateboard is gently held in place beneath his foot and his gaze tears away to fall on one of the baskets they’re handing out chalk in. he swallows thickly. he wants to. he really does, and art is his thing, and yet he still feels incapable somehow, just as he does in all social situations. like somehow even doing the thing he loves in a place he feels safe in, he’s going to stand out starkly, ruin the atmosphere somehow. he feels like in a sea of colours and people who shine brightly, nova sullies the harmony of hues, a lone grey causing discord. out of place and out of depth.
after finished her own drawings, astrid had decided to walk around to take pictures and look around at everyone else’s masterpieces before they were all washed away. In all reality, it was only a matter of time before Brighton’s currently perfect weather be raided by dreary grey clouds. “it really is, isn’t it? Have you drawn your section left?” she queried the male, taking a sip of the cold tea she had stopped to treat herself to as a pat on the back for coming out and actually finishing her drawing. she had always loved doodling, and drawing things but she never really had the patience to finish something she started.
“Behold!” Hadley’s voice makes everything sound a bit more glorious than it happens to be in reality, filling the immediate space around him as he takes a step back to assess his work. There’s a bright, yellow chalk sun, three pink tulips, and what appears to be some sort of sparkly, malformed cat-dragon hybrid at the centre. He tries, and that’s what counts. “My masterpiece. It’s my next tattoo.”
astrid looked up from her current job of trying to find an open spot on the concrete for her to begin her drawing mission. she looked at Hadley’s drawing, “next tattoo? is it too much to assume you are getting that tomorrow?” she asked since she knew that coloured tattoos happened to be on sale. she was thinking of getting one herself, but didn’t know what exactly she would get that was coloured.
there’s pastel blue and pink chalk smudged high on her cheekbones, residue from where she’s accidentally brushed the skin with her powder ridden fingertips. her “masterpiece” is nearly complete and she takes half a step back to admire it, pushing back her baseball cap to get a better look. she crouches down when she realizes what she’s missing, adding a few more extravagant flourishes of white to the bottom of her artistic cloud. “and this,” she announces as she sets down the chalk piece and claps her hands together to rid them of the leftover dust, “is why i leave the art to other people.” jovie’s rainbow is rudimentary, at best, so her statement isn’t unfounded but she’s going to be the first to admit to her shortcomings so that no one else has to.
astrid looked up from her own doodles of paper airplanes and balloons to jovie’s cloud, “oh no. That’s wonderful! it’s not something to be ashamed of at all.” she stated. It wasn’t her just throwing it out there to be nice, but astrid had genuinely meant what she said. her own drawings were on a much smaller scale and showed a moon with an outline of peter pan with a couple of paper airplanes swirling around it. astrid stood up from her squatting position, whipping the excess chalk from her hands on her jeans, adding to the mixture of black, white, and green dust that already resided on her thighs. she leaned over to check out jovie’s drawing from a different view. “yeah, i really like it.”
Hadley is retrospectively having a much better day than he thought he would do upon waking up this morning. He has a show tonight, but the production itself has sort of levelled out for him at this point, and he’s almost looking forward to the start of classes in just a few short weeks rather than dreading it for once. All in all, he’s loose-limbed and relaxed as he makes his way slowly down the beach, choosing to stick to his routine of having at least one walk a day. It tends to settle his restless bones, especially when it’s done closer to duk. He needs that. A lot.
It’s more curiosity than anything that has him hesitating when he happens upon his co-worker, sitting in the sand, and tossing stones at the sea. Hazel eyes shift, following the progression of the little rock for a time as he stops in his tracks, toes sinking into the sand and shoes in his hand. He’s not sure what she’s doing with them, or where she brought them from (she must have her own private collection, because she didn’t get them from here). Hadley is off right now, and concern wrinkles his brow as he turns his gaze back to her, taking in the state of her shoulders and her body language. “Hey.” He tries, voice quiet in the swell of the waves and the sea breeze.
Astrid jumped slightly at the sudden voice. She glanced to see Hadley and gave him a small smile. “Hello Hadley, how are you today?” She asked the other, a small pep in her voice that fought the body language that she was giving off. She sat up a bit taller, starting to give off a more inviting body language verse her stiff one she supported beforehand, and picked up another rock from her collection at her feet. Astrid held it out to him, “Would you like to join me? I’m just trying to see if I can beat my record of skipping rocks-- I’m pretty rubbish, my best is only four.” She explained.
It was a long past time of hers, since she grew up near Hyde Park, to go out to the Serpentine Lake and try to scour rocks to throw. For Astrid, it was always a competition between her and her brother. First, it was who could find the best rocks to throw; the smoothest, flattest, biggest, well-rounded. After that, they would divid the rocks they each found between the two of them evenly (Astrid’s brother would find the most rocks, while Astrid took more time trying to find perfect rocks) and take turns flicking them into the lake, each skip would earn the other a point. At the end, when they’ve each run out of rocks, the person with the most points won. It wasn’t as if they won a certain item, it was nearly a game of bragging rights until they both had time to hold another competition.
having spent the morning typing up the perfect cv ( or, perhaps, trying to – she really should have someone else look it over… ) and since her shift at the diner doesn’t start for a few hours, freya finds herself taking a walk along the beach, which isn’t a rarity. in all honestly, she feels strange not being at work; she’s taken on so many extra shifts recently that she feels exhausted almost constantly, and has perpetually sore feet. yet, she deems a walk a good idea. looking at the rippling water, she’ll never get over the beauty of the town she now calls home, and the sight of pebbles being tossed among the waves, watching them bounce along the water, looks like something out of a postcard, and it’s almost grounding. the force of the low flying rocks, though, is concerning, and freya turns to see where they’re coming from. upon spotting astrid, she smiles once more as she approaches. “hey, kiddo,” she greets, voice soft. astrid has always amazed the blonde with her talent, and freya’s shifts that coincide with astrid’s performance slots are some of her favourites. ”you okay ?? what did that poor stone ever do to you, huh ??”
If she were to be honest, Astrid wasn’t missing theatre at all at the moment. She only felt an immense guilt when she had to shut off her phone from her mother calling her constantly to try and get her back into it. For once in her life however, she was finally doing what she wanted and not what her mother was telling her to do. It felt nice, liberating almost.
Astrid jumped slightly when she heard the voice next to her, sending a smile over to the other. “Oh nothing at all.” She said softly, bending down to pick up another stone to throw. “I am not flicking my wrist well enough.” Astrid said calmly. “I am doing just fine, how about you. Don’t you have a shift in a couple of hours?”

The sound that the soft waves make when they hit the rocks is a sound that is truly relaxing. Upon one of her walking adventures, Astrid had found a quiet section of the beach that she found herself coming back to at least three times a week. It was nice to be on the beach, but also be away from the crowdedness that also came along with the beach. Sometimes when she was here, she would either listen to music while watching the waves come in or just try to skip rocks into the sea. Today, she happened to be doing the latter of the two options.
Skipping stones was a good pass time, but also allowed her to get her frustration out while she was away from performing. Most of the time she was able to take her frustrations into whatever role she was portraying, but as she is on a break, Astrid was somewhat struggling on what to help her release frustrations without telling anyone. It was only because she did not want to release her problems on other people, it seemed like such a burden on others.

“never let me try to get in touch with my inner domestic goddess again,” pip sighs, forlornly staring down into her teacup. she twirls the spoon she’d used to stir in her sugar around the rim of the dainty porcelain absently, envisioning the disaster from which she had only narrowly escaped. “i was only trying to whip up a full english for my charming flatmate – since i was awake for once – and nearly everything that could possibly have gone wrong, went wrong. you don’t even want to know the details but to make matters worse, i’m pretty certain i tried to use laundry detergent as dish soap when i tried to clean up my mess and i still feel like i have suds in places where suds shouldn’t be. please, tell me your day’s been a million times better?”
Astrid giggled a bit while she listened to the other’s rants. “Well, using detergent as dish soap isn’t a horrible substitute I don’t think. Anything really gets the job done, but detergent is really hard to get off. I had to use it to clean my dishes off and I ended up soaking all of them in water to make certain I had gotten everything off. It did manage to work in the end.” She said, trying to sympathize with the other as she took a sip of her own tea. “I do not mean to brag but my day has been going quite nicely. I’ve just done a bit of grocery shopping as well as trying to cook up dinner for when I get home after work.”

long past closing time, and an even longer time since she last found herself here, it appears that morgan is sat at the top of one of the ramps in the skate park, and she may or may not be wearing her pyjamas. oh, how it looked different than last time she was here, when the constant scuff of wheels against the ramps was forever present, and laughter, and the smell of smoke drifting its way around the area from behind one of the higher ramps. she’s sure it’s still like that in the day, must be; she’d be saddened to hear so if it wasn’t. she can almost hear the life it must be filled with at a more acceptable time of day, but aside from her own imagination, she can’t hear a goddamn thing. maybe a fox, a car, something in the distance, but no people.
why she chose highrise of all places to contemplate the meaning of life and potentially have an existential crisis is a detail she’s not too sure about. it just… happened. tossing and turning had, once again, developed into getting out of bed, as if that would somehow help the overwhelming level of heat rising in her body. everything was too warm. she forced a window open, then another, but nothing was helping, even though the nights have begun to cool just enough to allow most people to get some sleep. she grabbed a cardigan ( because she KNOWS it is cool outside, she’s just warm. too warm. far too warm ) and, impulsive as ever, left her flat, almost running down the stairs, to sit outside her block of flats. she got fidgety. her leg jiggled up and down, she tucked strands of hair behind her ears, just to untuck them and repeat, became restless, and eventually took off instead. she just walked. it didn’t occur to her how far she’d walked until she saw the gates of the skate park, and after shoving her cardigan on to free her hands ( said cardigan must be at least four sizes too big, and if morgan ever had anyone else in her flat, it would make her wonder if it was even her’s ) and sliding the hairband off her wrist and into her hair, she climbed over the fence and the rest, as they say, is history.
now, she traces the scuff marks on the ground with an unpainted finger, only pausing to push the sleeves off her cardigan up to her elbows, finger then trailing over the exposed skin of her knee, pyjama shorts revealing her usually hidden collection of tattoos. a never complete collection, however, but still a collection.it’s only then, as the contact with her own skin alerts her, finger trailing over tattoos, that she wonders what on earth she’s doing here. why here ?? why did she have to carry herself here ?? why does she have to be this way ?? why can’t she just stop at opening a window and getting a glass of water. it doesn’t feel like running away, it feels like running towards something.
Sleep is a terrible thing in Astrid’s opinion. It only grants itself maybe twice a week and even when it does, it is a horrid thing to keep. Not that she had problems with insomnia, it was just that ever since she ran away (it’s not really running away, her mother and brother know where to locate her if need be, but she is beginning to distance herself from the both of them.) she had a tough time getting to sleep. The only thing that would be able to help her is going for a walk, and sometimes two, to help clear her mind before she can actually lay down to attempt to sleep.
It was all okay because Astrid adored the town at night. She enjoyed the sounds of the people at the pier, the way the waves would hit the rocks and break them apart, creating small sand coves amongst the rock beaches. She loved the way that in certain parts of town, there was nothing. There were no cars zooming by, only the street lights illuminating your pathway, and there were no people racing by and bumping into her. It is almost as if you are in the most crowded city in one part, but walk across town and it is as if you are inhabiting a ghost town. That’s was Astrid loved about it, how it is both two places at once.
So here she was, taking her routine stroll before she settled in for bed. She tried to change it up, somedays take a right when you usually take a left, try to keep herself entertained. Sometimes Astrid would find herself walking ten or eleven blocks away from her flat before she decided to wander back, other times it would only take a simple walk around the block for her to be fine. Today was one of those days were she felt like exploring, she was still dressed in her outfit that she wore out to town in. It was a cropped long sleeved black and white stripped shirt with her night pair of trouser overalls over topped and just plain white sneakers.
Astrid knew she had taken one of her longer walks when she found herself approaching the skate park. She had never been here before so it was quite fascinating to her what it looked like when it was empty-- or almost empty. Astrid caught a glimpse of someone sitting at the top of the ramp, and cocked her head in confusion. It was quite late, surely it’s dangerous skating in the dark in the first place, but the skate park was also closed at the moment. “I do believe the skate park is currently closed right now, don’t you think.” She called out to the figure from her spot at the fence, beginning to move as close as she could with the fence hindering her further advancements.
