rain drips from the back entrance awning in a steady patter, muted against the evening city din, and there is a chill to the damp air that cuts through kerry's thin jacket. he hadn't packed warmly enough for what is supposed to be a short trip and he feels slightly regretful for it.
it's unpleasant, but not enough so that his ritual of sharing a cigarette with manuel needs foregone.
"not just trees," kerry supplies. he knows a bit about this and thus feels some thrill at the opportunity to share. though manuel didn't ask, he tells anyway. "plants in general. they reduce stress, boost immune health and happiness, ground you, all that good shit. they've done studies on it for decades, conclusions are usually... fuck, what is it? 'their presence will always be demonstrably more positively impactful than if they weren't there at all,' or... somethin' like that. you get the point."
he smiles as he snubs out his cigarette in the disposal stand and fights back a shiver. "meaning, try to get outside when you can. take a walk on break instead of hangin' around back here or something."
they both grievously miscalculated. kerry's jacket is way too thin for the weather's gloom and manuel is huddled on the steps with knees close to his chest, no jacket at all to speak off. but it's nice — rain and cold aside, that is. it's nice to talk to kerry, who has pieces of wisdom tucked away in unexpected places and indulges him during his breaks.
'' yeah? '' it's soft, a muted sort of wonder-like curiosity shooting through it. manuel takes a last drag, head tilted towards kerry ( but mindful about exhaling smoke away from him ), earnest attention keeping him eagerly waiting for the rest of it. '' i like that. ''
thunder rumbles off in the distance, a warning to fools sticking their noses outside on a day like this. manuel gets the hint, shifts up on his feet. '' i'll get myself a plant, see if i can manage to keep it alive. and take a few walks to the park, got it. '' walking out for too long still has him fidgety and nervous, but at some point he is going to have to beat this blood freezing paranoia and the habit to look over his shoulders every ten or so steps. nobody has tried to kill him in quite a while. years, in fact. '' maybe i'll ask paz.. they got so many plants. you two hang, right? '' another thunder, closer this time, has manuel's shoulders draw up in an involuntary flinch. '' shit. let's scoot inside. ''

okay yes, these were in the movie but. the surety? the absolute certainty? what were you planning in that head of yours, charon? because i would not put it past him to try and catch a bullet for winston, actually (which he did, but probably not as he intended). which is funny, because his loyalty should go to the high table, first and foremost. he should step aside. the marquis doesn't even acknowledge his presence until he speaks, in fact. it's inconsequential, to him. he is not a man, only a means to get a message across. yet, for all his careful words about the high table, charon's loyalty truly only lies with one man, who is under the table like the rest of them. it's about the unyielding devotion to me.
and now, what wasn't in the movie
charon doesn't need winston to say anything. he isn't even looking at him. yet he knows. he knows how much the hotel meant to him, he has been there for almost 30 years. he knows him. probably better than anyone does (and even he doesn't know everything, some things are going to stay locked up, even to him. he knows this too, it's fine). now, for that 'but somehow that would be improper': for who? not for winston, i believe. for the marquis and the high table in general, more likely. he would, then, have touched his shoulder in comfort if only the marquis hadn't been there.
one thing i really don't like about the show is how they just.. went with the least original route for charon?? oh, he was there already. no notes. he is going to be there for a long long time (willingly) already, why can't he have a life outside the continental first? i get it, they probably wanted as many links to the movies as possible, and god knows if there is going to be a second season. but yeah, in my vision? winston and charon don't meet until 1985-87 and charon is in his late 20s or early 30s, very much not a kid.

for a moment they tense, coil up as if ready to strike whoever pushed them. ready to protect their friends, unassuming and dancing to the music of the club, shrouded in led lights. years ago, they might have — years ago, they might not have stayed their hand so easily, fight gone and limbs turned loose again in a heartbeat. but kerry's voice follows suit, a moment after his hands, the push nothing but playful and harmless. paz knows this because they know him, trust him, welcome him into their home and life.
'' come on, dance with me. '' the words ring with both laughter and fondness as paz takes his hand and tugs a little. they don't move towards the dance floor quite yet, they wait a beat first to check in with him. not without a little teasing, though. whatever mirth shines in their eyes now, they mean it. they can have fun even without a dance floor, without this club they entered on a whim. or they can rest, trading jokes and stories on the way home. they can go through leftover food and watch a movie, then wish each other goodnight, grasping at every bit of normalcy where they can find it. paz for sure is, at least. they have worn nothing but blood for far too many years.

THERE IS HESITATION IN E.AMES' . . . everything. where he is a prodigy at making up elaborate lies in every color, honesty is the part he is not used to anymore. never was, perhaps. not about his personal life, certainly not about his job. even those who are kind of ingrained in the lifestyle, explaining the ins & outs of d.reamshare is tricky. there is a reason he can write bills with numbers that have several zeroes & that's a standard he would like to keep. which is why he cannot give away anything. (OR, IN MANUEL'S WORDS, HELP HIM UNDERSTAND.) e.ames is also weak to fluffy looking hair & big brown doe eyes. do you see the issue here? "there's very little about it that i can explain to you." which is a line that has never led up to anything good & sure as hell won't today. "but if you ever want to leave this dingy place behind⸺⸺" the dingy place in question being the most lavish hotel bar imaginable to mankind . . . e.ames' point still stands. he thinks. "give me a call. there are things better seen than spoken about."

manuel settles a freshly dried glass down, the towel sitting comfortably on one shoulder and since the bar is quiet tonight ( at least up here at ground level ) he lets go of the careful posture he has kept until now, not exactly stiff but not loose either. he rests his hip against the counter and smiles, utterly untroubled by eames' vague as hell words. '' alright, alright. keep your secrets mystery man. '' manuel is intrigued, he won't deny that, but this is not like any other bar in town — here, people don't usually spill their souls to the bartender. which manuel is grateful for. in general, it means less trouble and less fuel for his nightmares.
he knows why eames comes here, the basics of it, at least. he has learned to recognize some of the people providing information ( or the birds, as he calls them ), but apart from that eames is a mystery to him and he suspects that's exactly as intended. manuel is not immune to pretty blue eyes and broad shoulders, however, so of course he is considering taking him up on his offer. one day, at least. he likes this place, but he figures he will have to learn how to stand on his own at some point.

it is a lovely mid morning, inside a lovely little café in brooklyn, when paz feels the sting of old prayers on the tongue and not the taste of their delicious blueberry muffin. madre de dios. salváme. they almost reach for a cross that no longer sits against their skin, on their chest. they don't feel like they have been told a joke or fed a scam for a tarot read ( that would have involved a handsome stranger, or some vague words about choices ). one doesn't laugh about death, paz has learned this young.
lips tremble, then press together into a wince to ward off the wave of fear that threatens to have their mind go off in a myriad of different directions ( who, how, please i don't want to die ). looking at @koldnuya makes them feel surprisingly steadier, however. it's how her expression doesn't seem to change, as if she has told them she might eat indian tonight instead of predicting their end.
near their elbow, a waitress refills the empty mug of coffee and paz nearly jumps, murmuring an apology right after. they take a deep breath, hands now on the table, palms down as if that, too, might help calm their nerves. they know this wooden table, it has become part of their routine: paz sat there almost every morning since coming here, right at home amidst potted plants and the smell of baked goods. it doesn't look like what they suppose rozaliya's scene might be, the café is little more than a college student lair with the free wifi and laptop stations near the window, after all. but that was the point, wasn't it? showing her their favorite spot.
'' can i do something to stop it? '' they think about leaving town with a pang of sadness, packing one lonely bag and setting some distance between them and the darkness they have chased for years, but they have a feeling it wouldn't help. one doesn't laugh about death, because it always catches up to you.

'' uhh, you do? '' manuel flicks ash down on the ashtray, seated on the steps to the hotel's back entrance. he smiles up at @axeattitude, anyway ( a normal smile, not the nervous i would rather be elsewhere smile, certainly not the i am going to die wince ), before glancing at his phone's screen to check the time. ten minutes to end of his break.
honestly? manuel doesn't think much about the reason kerry comes around sometimes ( hey, it's a nice place, for starters. and kerry is a nice looking dude ), despite being a famous rockstar with — he assumes — no business in the criminal world. it happens. usually with rich people that have no problems paying for a five star hotel room with real cash, regular world kind of cash, instead of one little handy coin.
'' hey. it's all good, you know? there's very little gossip going on around here.. even in the group chat, pity. so, whatever you're here for? nobody's gonna squeak to the vultures with cameras. '' it's house rules, actually. guests privacy and employers integrity and something else that manuel doesn't remember right now. anyway, it makes sense for an establishment with their sort of clientele.

they had opened the door to find @axeattitude outside hours ago, mouth easily curled into a youthful and bright smile, all dimples and east coast sunshine. then paz had beaconed him inside with an unabashed ' mi amor, are you hungry? ' that might have made casual on lookers wonder, but that doesn't give either of them pause. it is simply how paz expresses that overflowing amount of love they feel, to friends and lovers alike ( and everything in between ). not despite of what they have been through, perhaps, but precisely because of it. no more shame. no more pain.
asking him to stay for dinner had come natural, a simple progression of the late afternoon bleeding into evening.
the kitchen smells of cilantro and freshly out of the oven bread. paz is humming to some playlist ( spanish pop to rock, then back around to old style disco ) as their stir the soup. they can hear kerry rummaging around for something at their back, but they don't turn just yet. they wait, patient and content, comfortable in their skin as well as around him.
'' kerry, you— '' they all but gasp, a mouthed oh my god moving their mouth. paz knows their usually so steady fingers are shaking slightly as they reach for the bundle of fabric. it's not for the novelty — they have given each other gifts in the past, trinkets from markets and more serious things alike, but this feels personal in a new way. it makes them feel truly seen, accepted. it's armbands, a wonderful combination of dark and practical and not boring, with special inner pockets that would allow them to stash their knives in public without looking like a psychopath on the loose. '' it's perfect, i love this so much. thank you. '' they lean over to give him a kiss on the cheek, not bothering to hide how their eyes have started to glimmer, wet with tears of happiness.
