A study in: found family, cultural belonging, reclaiming the narrative, what you leave behind
Having been born in a desolate, barren wasteland, abandoned by her birth family, raised by pirates, disabled, and then rescued by Mandalorians, Zu'elah spends her life surrounded by ruins, artifacts, and ancient histories - an accurate representation of herself. A story woven around the quest for identity and found family, Zu'elah aims to preserve the Mandalorian way before she loses it too.

Send me ‘💍’ for our muses to wake up married after a night of heavy drinking || @temperedfaith
The day begins with a pounding headache and the driest mouth she's had in years. Peeling her eyelids open feels like a chore, but Zu'elah manages to do so after a few tries. Ka'ra, when was the last time she'd felt this horrible after a night of drinking? Not only that - when was the last time she could barely remember? Whatever that bottle Casimir got was incredibly strong. Casimir. The woman freezes, eyes going wide as she looks around her quarters aboard her ship.
He's nowhere to be seen. Thank Ka'ra.
Then, the night comes back in glimpses, small moments of the two of them talking, sharing cultures, fleeting touches, not explorative or invasive, but comforting and warm, her words. Mhi solus tome, mhi solus dar'tome, mhi me'dinui an, mhi ba'juri verde. Then he repeats.
Zu'elah's stomach drops as she scrambles out of her bed and stumbles a bit over the blankets. Catching herself just barely, she bolts through her ship, looking in the bunks. Her footsteps squeak against the floor, her body coming to a stop abruptly as she arrives in the doorway. Casimir is there on the bunk, and his eyes snap open the moment she arrives. Osik.
She falters for a second. "Oh. Su cuy'gar." Then winces at her awkwardness. Stop making this awkward. "Tea?" she then offers politely, hoping that he doesn't remember anything.

Zu'elah's vision is a bit different than that of normal Exalans. Because her father is an exiled Sh'akiban and her mother is human, she is technically a hybrid. The Sh'akiban evolved through time, and with the long-term aid of the Force, developed superior vision and unique features for dwelling among the glittering crystal caves below the surface.
She has more rod cells in her eyes, resulting in extreme low-light sensitivity, allowing her to see more in the dark. Because of the Sh'akiban's unique need to evolve among rock, they developed modified cones, resulting in more vivid color, and she can see mineral structures, crystal patterns, oxidation patterns, and surface textures even in low light. Where a normal human, or even an advanced being like a clone, might see just a rock, Zu'elah can see the different types, such as granite, iron, beskar, quartz, copper, etc.
Her eyes look different from humans as well, though only noticeable in different settings. Because of the reflective layer behind her retina, her eyes glow completely silver in certain lights.
In daylight, her eyes look like a normal human's; she has better visual acuity and can often see things others might miss. In the twilight, as the light shifts, colors become more vivid for her, and her pupils widen, allowing her to see significantly better than humans, and a low glow can be seen behind them. In complete darkness, her eyes glow slightly; she can see shapes, minerals, and movement, and navigate without light.
When she's near objects, she can also detect recent environmental changes or disturbances, such as temperature, moisture, or even a rock's material density. It's not heat perception but environmental changes most humans can't perceive, like recently touched objects, warm machinery, disturbed surfaces, or brittle rock.
If you shine a light into her eyes, they would appear completely silver, and that is also how they look in security footage.
"I didn't volunteer."It's said quietly. "For this mission. Did you know?"
His hands clench on the bowl of taumeoba flakes he'd been trying to force down. That and coma slurries were the only food they had left. Rocky lay sleeping only a few feet away but he didn't worry about waking him. Eridians slept like the dead.
Zu'elah pauses with her hand halfway raised to her mouth, the flakes of taumeoba dropping back into the bowl as the two eat their meal. A sense of dread washes over her. She had noticed his lack of personal items, had wondered about it, but never asked. It seemed...wrong. The xenogeologist thought maybe it was his way of disconnecting and coming to terms with their situation.
Oh, how wrong she was.
She flinches when he yells, shame washing over her. "Wha-no! I thought..." Zu'elah pauses and looks at him again, her expression morphing into sadness. "Stratt said you were nervous... so." Shaking her head, Zu'elah sighs, "It doesn't matter what I thought. I'm sorry."
What else is there to say? The only humans for light-years; nothing will change the past or bring back what he lost. "You still did it though," she adds softly with an attempt at a smile, waving the spoon now empty of taumeoba flakes. It's a poor attempt at consoling him, she knows.
omg i forGOT imagine if zu was sent to kamino to train the clones. jorr clan followed jaster mereel as mand'alor (with arlana being present on galidraan). If jango would've considered jorr clan when picking the mandalorians for training he MAY have been directed to zu'elah by isrena ( the jorr clan alor) . having the background in fighting, and unique mandalorian historical knowledge, with a history of following mereel, there's a chance zu may have done so for extra cash and with the idea of spreading the resol'nare.
Born in Matmata, Tunisia, Zu'elah Kessyk was the youngest of 7, did not share the same father as her siblings, and was ostracized from them because of it. She spent most of her youth exploring Matmata, rock climbing, and stargazing. At the age of 9, she was separated from her family and had to resort to living on the streets. During this time, she suffered from illnesses that resulted in severe hearing loss in both ears...
At 12 years old, she was found by the authorities and placed in the care of the Tunisian authorities. Because of her age and disability, Zu'elah struggled to get adopted and find a home. She was placed in one of the Children's Villages. As time went on, her case opened to international cases, and she was adopted by a Swiss family, Isrena Jorr.
With Isrena, Zu'elah learned BSL and International Sign. Having a natural affinity for science and languages, she received a full-ride scholarship for her bachelor's degree in geology at ETH Zurich while also studying Social and Cultural Anthropology, with a focus on the anthropology of science.
With those studies, she decided to pursue the interplanetary discipline and completed her PhD with the European Space Agency, focusing on planetary geodesy and meteorite analysis. After graduating with her doctorate, she got a research position working for the NCCR PlanetS* / European Space Agency**, living in Paris, France
MODERN*
After 5 years at NCCR PlanetS, Zu'elah was feeling the cabin fever of working in research labs and decided to change her pace. She changed the pace of her life, focusing on teaching and becoming a professor at Sorbonne University in France. With her newfound free time, she spent it rock climbing and traveling the world, specifically exploring places with interesting rock formations and beautiful night skies. She often enjoyed sleeping under the stars, just her, the rock, and the stars.

PROJECT HAIL MARY **
Zu'elah was working at the European Space Agency when the Petrova line was discovered. As a planetary geologist, she followed everything there was to know about the Petrova Line.
Zu'elah was one of the many scientists, like Ryland Grace, that Stratt recruited early on for Project Hail Mary. Because of Zu'elah's expertise and her dissertation on how Europa/Jupiter's subsurface ocean could change what life beyond Earth might look like, she was mostly hands-on and involved with Stratt personally until they realized they needed a biologist. After being dismissed from the project, Zu'elah asked if she could stay on, claiming that Venus could be just as important in regard to the planet's structure. Maybe something in the composition of the planet could be different.
Research yielded few results, frustrating her to no end. She then switched to a more preparatory role, focusing on anticipating problems during the flight and possible celestial bodies they might encounter. Zu'elah's role became considering the types of planets the Hail Mary crew might find around Tau Ceti, and whether that could help.
Note: If there are Graces, Rockys, or Stratts with verses where they recruited additional crew members for Project Hail Mary, she could have been brought aboard as an auxiliary scientist in astrogeology. This, however, I know is a reach, but it can be a fun basis for more interactions.

okay. it's true. I'm afraid! I don't want to die! I've worked my ASS off on this project and I deserve to LIVE......You're MURDERING ME. I don't want to die, please don't send me off to DIE!
