Things happened, so new introduction post! Let's start with the basics!

I don't have a preferred name, so Orion and Astra are the defaults. Same with pronouns, no preference, but default is they/them.

I identify as Aro/Ace/Pan in regards to romantic/sexual/platonic attraction respectively, with Demi being my Aro/Ace sublabel. I feel fairly apathetic towards my gender presentation, so I consider myself agender. I am also a young adult.

I live in the USA, born in Alaska, raised in Florida. I love what this country could be, and despise what it currently is.

I'm still figuring myself out, but here's a few things I'm pretty certain of right now: I like space, learning, art, media of all kinds, and my grandpa's homemade pizza. I do not like those that hurt others, the deep ocean, the patriarchy, miscommunication, extreme temperatures, and everything about Florida besides it's natural beauty and diverse ecosystem.

I'm no longer in school but I plan to go back (hopefully next election cycle), and I have CompTIA's A+ certification.

I've been on Tumblr since the beginning-ish of the Covid Pandemic, so about 6-ish years?

The closest person I have to a partner is moving back home, which is a 10+ hour drive from me. This is fucking me up for a variety of reasons but the biggest issue is physical touch. Before him, I was extremely touch starved, and I didn’t even realize how badly it was affecting my mental health until I found someone willing to be physically affectionate with me. Now, when he leaves, I’m going to be completely without a core part of my emotional needs.

This is the part where most people would say “well there’s plenty of fish in the sea” and “just put yourself out there and you’ll find somebody” but may I offer the casual rebuttal of “I am aroace and finding someone completely ok with being just friends and also physically affectionate is damn near impossible irl”

Of course, finding someone like that requires me putting myself out there regardless, but I have genuinely no idea where to start looking that boosts my chances of success. I do have a very shaky alternative solution to this problem but if I go about it the wrong way, I may burn some pretty important bridges.

At this point I think I’m just going to have to do an assessment of whether I want to risk putting myself in potentially physically dangerous situations to find a new friend, or risk ruining pre-existing relationships.

went to barnes and noble the other day and actually got a look at physical copies of Aurora, and I was right that the author commentary is distractingly obnoxious. i wish there was a way to get a print copy without it.

one of the important things about dvd directors commentary is that it's optional. i can even ignore the commentary text on the website easily. you can't do that with a physical book.

I’m curious what exactly you mean by that. By author commentaries, do you mean the pages with extra notes/sketches/content at the end of the chapters? What exactly do you find distractingly obnoxious about extra content at the end of a chapter, and how is that any harder to ignore than the alt-text and page notes on the website, genuine question?

is an unclose-able pop-up that completely kills the tension of the scene. I can't ignore it because it's literally covering the art. It's intruding on me actually being able to read the comic by covering the art. It's intruding on the pacing. It's intruding on the tension of the scene by distracting from what's actually happening.

The tension of this scene requires that I, the audience, be able to see and process the fact that I know what's coming and the characters don't. This requires that I see the image without anything interrupting Alinua's dialogue or trying to break me out of looking at the sentinel's hand.

Also one of the appeals of buying a physical copy would be getting a closer look at the art. I can't do that if it's covered by pop-ups.

My problem is the pop-ups wreck the diegesis of the comic and kill the tension by making it impossible for me to actually look at and concentrate on what's going on. It's easy to ignore the author's comments (safely under the comic page in its own little window) and alt-text (only viewable if one intentionally hovers over a page, which i can just not do) on the site because they're separate from the page itself and I can therefore ignore them. I cannot ignore a pop-up ad covering the art.

So it's recently come to my attention that some people claim to be able to "choose how they feel"

Maybe I'm just an emotional person who has never learned proper regulation, but is it possible to truly choose what emotions you feel? I was under the impression that we simply feel whatever emotions are triggered by stimuli, and we can only choose our response to those feelings — not choose whether or not the emotions are triggered.

What's y'alls stance?

learning that 1. there's a thing called the 'gen z stare' 2. it pisses people off and 3. it's just underpaid service workers staring at someone until they follow a simple instruction, has been interesting.

for example, the card reader says 'remove card' the customer goes 'it says remove card, what do i do?' then some underpaid 20 year old just stares at whatever twat just asked that question. apparently that's devastating for baby boomers and gen x'ers, and they're complaining about it. retail workers should be allowed to jump the counter and kill customers

So, this is only one take on it. A sort of misinterpretation by Gen Z happened and (from what I’ve seen on here and TikTok) this is what actually happened:

Older gens started complaining about how younger people would just blankly stare when the older person tried to interact with them. Essentially, a roles reversed version of what OP wrote but in any interaction, not just service work.

Gen Z refuted with saying it was the “customer service stare” — something that’s been around probably as long as customer service.

Cue discourse

My personal opinion? That “blank stare” that boomers complain out? That’s just Gen Z not wanting to talk to or interact with people. We seem to be notoriously antisocial and boomers love their theatre of social hierarchies and pretending to have to authority by forcing young people into unwanted social interaction.

Could it be that Gen Z is all mentally slow/dense or just straight up rude? Not really. There are people like that in every generation. We just don’t want to talk to y’all.

I admit, it could also just be people dissociating or those like me with audio processing disorders whom sometimes take a second to understand wtf you just said, but overall it’s probably just antisocial behavior. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Stop forcing people to interact. It’s rude at best and downright manipulative at worst.

public defenders are among the best, brightest, and most selfless attorneys out there. they are on the front lines of combating the carceral state and protecting the rights of every day people. get it straight in your heads. thanks.

Being a public defender is one of the most essential and under-recognized jobs someone can do to help maintain our democracy. Fuck absolutely anyone and everyone who goes after them. If you’re against public defenders you are fighting for fascism. There’s nothing more to say on the matter.

It is infinitely preferable that some guilty scumfuck bastard motherfuckers who deserve the worst walk free, rather than the state should have an easy time of throwing any undesirable into prison.

Any power you grant the state must be evaluated against the damage it will do when (not "if," when!) the state turns it against the most marginalized and oppressed groups under its authority.

There must be high quality, professional, dedicated and well funded public defenders in a democratic society, and they must be available to everyone. Not because Nazis and pedophiles and racists and etc should have nice things, but because the moment the state can get away with abridging people's right to a fair trial it will turn that power on the vulnerable. Inevitably, and usually instantly.

It's not a nice thing that the worst people in the world get good legal representation against the state, it is a grim fucking necessity. One of those rights that people had to write in a lot of innocent blood.
