The Magick of Booze: A Correspondence Table

This is my own personal correspondence table for the use of alcohol in magick. It may not match your own usage of alcohol, but if you like anything you see, feel free to adopt it. Some of this is based in what the alcohol is made from, some on its history, and some of this is based in personal experience or associations. This is not about alcohol as an offering, but the usage of it as a spell component. The list is in no way exhaustive and does not include mixed drinks or brands. Just your basics.

Distilled Spirits

Absinthe: (Air) Useful in protection work. It is especially useful for safe astral travel. Using it to draw sigils for safe travels on one’s body before leaving it can keep away nasties in the meantime.

Gin: (Earth) Useful in spells promoting good health and is good as a binding ingredient for other alcohols’ properties. It can also be a good to use if the caster of the spell lives in poverty and this is pertinent to the spell in some way.

Rum: (Water) Useful in money spells or spells for gaining other material possessions. Rum can be especially useful in a spell involving an underhanded motive or intention, especially if the results leave you with more as a side effect of the spell’s main goal.

Tequila: (Fire) Tequila is all about timing. Perfect, exact timing. It can be used in spells involving punctuality, appointments, or decision making. It can be used when something has to be done just right, as well. Never use it for something involving the past or anything about the future. Tequila is always for the present, and in this moment, as they come issues.

Vodka: (Fire and Water) Good for strength and courage. Lifting yourself up by the bootstraps and carrying on with what needs to be done no matter how hard it is or how tired you are. Can be used in spells involving getting through difficult times, motivation, pushing forward, finishing projects. Shit’s gotta get done? Vodka.

Whiskey: (Water) Whiskey can be used in spells to promote change, usually when change is unwanted by someone else. It helps bypass interference and bring the change about in ways that which opposes it does not immediately notice.

Brandy: (Earth) Brandy can be used in love spells, especially those for preserving pre-existing love. It can also be used for attracting a long-lasting love as opposed to a fling.

Fermented Beverages

Beer: (Earth) Beer is used in spells involving the home, family, and the past. It can also be used in spells involving practicality vs desire.

Cider: (Earth) Cider is used in spells for harvesting what you’ve already planted. It helps ensure that the things you’re working towards are successful and your effort is not wasted. But you must put in the effort.

Wine: (Earth and Air) Wine can be used in spells for health, stress relief, and blessings. It can also be used for spells involving standing on your own and independence.

Mead: (Air) Mead can be used for spells involving inspiration, study, education, scholarly pursuits, the arts, and oratory issues. It can also be used to sweeten the temper of yourself or someone else.

Sangria: (Fire) Sangria is good for happiness spells, celebrations, and anything involving good times and fun. It is also good for spells meant to broaden horizons and promote new experiences.

The seal of protection, privacy and invisibility – can be stamped or marked on documents to protect them from prying eyes, lest the witches’ venom befall them. Can also be used to hide oneself from that which walks on the astral plane.

salt can damage porous materials like wood, so using a bowl made of glass, ceramic or metal is best. glass helps clarify and amplify magickal intention. ceramic embodies earth energy— robust, strong, and unwavering. metal of any type helps project magick to fill a space.

regular table salt is a classic cleanser and protecter. other specialty salts can have additional magickal impact: sea salt, associated with the water element, relieves residual negative emotions, like sadness and anger. himalayan pink salt is associated with astral travel and can help dispel curses and hauntings. if you need some serious no-nonsense banishing, add powdered charcoal to any salt.

i am just wondering this: would you ever visit a metaphysical store, straight up walk to the reader, not say hello to them, straight up ask a question and THEN, IF the reader is bummed out enough to tell you an answer - say nothing, turn around, leave the store, walk away and never turn around ever ???

i’m honestly curious? would you do this? doesn’t scream every cell in your body that this is not okay? i’m not sure how it is for other people, but for me.. exactly this is what it feels like to do free readings on tumblr.

That last one (c.) is the most stressful. Especially with career readings. How do I do a career reading for someone when I have no idea if they’re in school or the workforce (or both!)? What job are they currently doing? What job do they hope to get? Do they have support from their parents or a trust fund that would allow them to, say, pursue a Ph.D. or study abroad or get an art degree? When all I have is “career reading” and a birth chart, I could tell somebody that they would be most happy slapping paint on a canvas like Jackson Pollock, but if I’m talking to a single parent with a mountain of debt and ailing parents, telling them to chase their dreams, move to New York, go to art school, and be the painter they were born to be is either cold-hearted or reckless. I trust people not to be stupid and hope for the best, but I would rather…you know…give appropriate advice? As an astrologer, I can do something with nothing, but as Steven Forrest always says, you might have the potential to climb Everest, but it doesn’t mean you’ll be born into a situation that will support you getting there, and you can live a perfectly happy life without meeting your “potential.” But without any info about who you are, all I have is Everest and a wild ass guess about what my mystery client is actually capable of.

The rest, yeah, is just heart-deadening. In those clients’ defense, I think I have a part to play since I’ve done readings for people who treat me that way. One thing I’ve learned about doing readings on tumblr is that people will just copy requests for readings they see you’ve already done. (If you’ve ever gotten a reading from someone who seems to be following your guidelines but clearly hasn’t read a thing on your blog and knows nothing about you, readers, this is why.) If those people see a finished reading in response to a rude ask, they probably just assume that’s the right way to treat me. And other readers, too. Shit. 

Readers, if you’ve been getting crap like this because I’ve been putting up with it and making people think it’s okay, I’m sorry. Radioactive-snake is right. This is not okay.

hello @beamagical - i am truly sorry about how these requests look like - it’s just so sad to see how people treat so so many readers! it’s terrible and as you said disheartening and heart-deadening.

my personal solution for this is that i am now only answering the requests for the people who i see reguarly on my blog, who are interacting with me, friends, people who send asks that show they have common sense and courtesy, who have read the rules and who don’t treat me like a divination machine.

and furthermore .. i know this step might be harsh, but i am doing this however. when i am explicitly disclaiming that the requirement to send me a reading requests IS that you GIVE FEEDBACK - and if it doesn’t happen within three days, the people are getting blocked.

i know this sounds like “whoa noony chill” but i am seeing this too often in this community and i am honestly sick of it. people AS A WHOLE should think about the way they treat other people, especially people who do a service for them FOR FREE.

Nightmare Jar Recipe

Here is a fantastic nightmare jar that has been of tremendous use for me and my friends and family.  I will say this - it only lasts about a year before you will need to make a new one.

Ingredients

1 small jar you can seal

~8 in. Black Yarn

3-10 strands of hair from the person you are trying to protect

8-20 sharp objects like rusty nails, broken glass, etc.

Salt

Lavender

Mint

Rose Petals (optional)

Bay Leaves

Candle

Sharpie

Directions

Start by placing the hair into the vessel. This tricks whatever is causing the nightmares into the jar. Then put in the sharp objects to poke and prod the negativity and trap it in the jar once and for all.

Next, put in your herbs. Mint and lavender are meant to bring restful and calm sleep, and the bay leaves are meant for cleansing and keeping evil at bay. The rose petals will bring dreams of love. 

SIDE NOTE: In my experience, the rose petals brought a lot of insanely sexual dreams.  So take that and do what you want with it.

Now add about half of your salt. The black yarn absorbs the negative energies. Wrap it up in a little ball and drop it into the jar, visualizing the negativity being sucked into a black hole. Pour the remaining salt into the jar and seal it with wax from your candle.

Feel free to write inscribe protective runes or sigils into the jar with the sharpie if you so choose.

Charge the nightmare jar in the light of the moon, and keep near the bed. A window sill is best as it will need to be recharged from time to time.

the magick of besoms

besoms are a witch’s ritual broom; they are excellent tools for cleansing, blessing and spellcasting. i personally find besoms to be just as useful and integral in my craft as wands, if not more.

in tradition, besoms were made with sacred woods; a shaft of ash, twigs of birch as bristles, and strands of willow to bind it together. ash brings prosperity and protection, birch for cleansing, and willow for lunar goddess magick. of course, different woods have different properties, and based on what you want your besom to embody, you can use any of these woods:

alder for decision making and courage

ash for health and prosperity

cedar for power and strength

hawthorn for fae magick and rebirth

hazel for creativity and knowledge

maple for longevity and luck

oak for truth and protection

there are many ways to use a besom in witchcraft. a common use is to cleanse a ritual area or space before casting spells, by literally sweeping away any residual energies (though the besoms doesn’t have to touch the floor - leave the dust sweeping to the household broom!). similarly, you can cleanse your home by sweeping the energies up and sending them out the front door. if a guest brings negative energy with them for a visit, simply sweep the area in which they resided after they’ve left.

besoms are also protective. simply placing one by your front door is a powerful protective charm of its own. placing it under your bed is one way to prevent nightmares or harmful energies from influencing your dreams. 

lastly, besoms are a symbol of unity, marriage and love; traditionally, pagan weddings involve the couple jumping over a besom as a part of the ceremony. for this reason, hanging a besom in your home can strengthen a relationship, bring marital harmony, or draw a powerful love to those without it.
