Her eyes flicked up to his for a fraction of a second, but it felt like an eternity. The cold look plastered across his features made herĀ teeth sink down into her lower lip. āMax.ā Sighing his name, it felt strange rolling off her tongue. She hadnāt spoken it in so long. āI canāt.ā
Frustrated, he glanced up at her, shaking his head. "It wasn't a question." He sighed out, fists clenched. "You shouldn't be afraid of me in the first place." It felt so strange demanding to someone how he wasn't meant to be viewed in such a negative term. He had been stuck in apathy for so long he had almost forgotten what emotional pain felt like. "Please."
"Thatāll be easy.. Iām good at making friends when I need to." She shrugs, a smirk plastered on her lips. "Erm.. Well, I canāt say Iāve made many friends in this place. But then again nobody seems harmful enough to call a friend.ā
He furrowed his brows, shooting her a crooked smile. "Define when." Max chuckled, attempting to lighten up the conversation. "Tell me how it goes afterwards. I'm on a job."
"You donāt get to do this to me. Not again." It wasnāt fair, he couldnāt do this to her. Not once did she ever tell him he could have her heart in his hands. And not one single time did she give him permission to drop it on the floor.
At that moment, he felt relief sprinkled with a teaspoon of joy. He didn't want to argue--not for the very first time. He just wanted to hold her in his arms and wipe his sadness away on a piece of cloth; but it wasn't that easy, it would only allow his enemies to see him bleed. Max gave her a cold look, feeling his heart clench as he did so. He could only hold it so long before he looked away from him, glancing blankly at the shiny marble floor. "It's your move now."
"Yeah, yeah. And you can join Elizabeth in hell. I never left the world, I left your world. And I intend to keep it that way.ā
"I don't doubt that." His heart raced. He could have only hoped she didn't mean that because he swore he could feel his heart tearing apart with a tinge of sorrow flowing within his veins. Nobody hurt him. He hated her.
"Donāt be cruel now, yes Iām asking you." She raises a brow as he turns. She couldnāt put the pieces together, her life became a puzzle with a missing piece and she didnāt know why. "Yet? āSoon.. Right?"
"Soon." He clarified with a smile that quickly faded. Max turned back to her, stuffing his hands in his jacket. "But for now, I'd focus on making friends. Or--friends? I wouldn't call them that, but they might just come in handy when the moment is right."
"Iām human, Max, I have emotions. And I am afraid. Iām afraid of you. And what you do to me.ā
"And I am just another monster that parents tell their kids about at night, but I'll save you the worry and simply welcome you back to the world."
"Talk to you about it? Oh thatās hilarious. You know, Iād believe you, but weāve been down this road before. So I call bullshit."
"Bullshit? I never thought you'd be afraid."
"Get me out of here, Iām asking you to get me out of this place right now.. I canāt handle much more of these insane people, Max. Everyone thinks they know who I am but I know none of them."
"You're asking me?" He squinted at her briefly, turning away shortly afterwards. "Take a breather. That's all you need. I can't get you out of here yet."
āNah. Of course it did, that was kind of the point ā nobody followed me.ā
"Cheap move. You could have talked to me about it; I've gained a little sympathy believe it or not."
"Iām sorry, you donāt expect me to care, do you?"
"Do you? I except little to nothing of you, mostly after that stupid stunt you pulled. That sounded like a suicide letter."
"Hopefully not. Thereās enough people that infuriate me residing here."
"I wonder why that would be, Elizabeth."
"Oh--you don't expect me to stay, do you?"
I will kill you. Twice.
It is a pretty view from up here.
Are you going to jump or not?
Are you gonna answer or not?
