Hang on.
Wait a minute.
You know what?
Holy smokes.
Iâm a massive narcissist.
Recap: Andrew Kreisberg suspended by Warner Bros. for sexual harassment (Nov. 10); Greg Berlanti & Sarah Schechter state they were recently made aware of the allegations (also Nov. 10); Marc Guggenheim retweets & comments on an unrelated Conan O'Brien joke, opening the door for this. (Nov. 12)
For those of you who were looking for the whole thing in one place.
Kristen:Â Iâve worked with you a ton. But I feel like when weâve worked together, weâre always really mean to each other. Like, always assholes. But thatâs not our relationship at all. Weâre very nice to each other. Adam: Yeah, super nice. Boring, nice white people. Kristen: That sounds like an accurate description of who we are as friends.
A+ Dragging, Compliments of EBR
@therewas-a-girl
So, in summary, this happened.
And Marc made it worse.
And Emily came for his balls.
A murder, in three acts.
No question, just a happy FYI: a group of us on twitter ran a Gofundme campaign to raise some money to get Emily a gift. We raised so much in such a small period of time that I bought the gifts and then donated close to $600 to the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre in Vancouver. The Olicity/Felicity fandom is amazing (minus a few bad apples) and we always seem to come together for good causes. See? Some good happens!
I love it! Â Whatâs the link? Â Iâll donate. Â Thanks for doing!
The campaign is over(I wanted her to get the good before end of season lol) BUT the link to donate to the Downtown Eastside Womenâs Centre is:
www.dewc.caÂ
They are amazing and do such needed and good work.Â
Thank you for wanting to contribute though!
arrow writers: we really love felicity, everyone kind of fights to get to write her scenes, weâre really excited about the storylines weâre planning for her.
also the arrow writers:Â sorry we donât have time to fully explore her storylines, but it was fun to actually get a chance to articulate the anti-Felicity point of view.
#when i hear (inevitably misogynist usually male) fans complaining about how âfefeâ has somehow taken over the show#and supposedly gets disproportionately favoured by the writers #apparently ruining everything #i wanna be able to shove this gifset down their throats #sheâs as badly treated as literally every character who isnât a white straight guy on this show #if you hate her congrats you probably still give more of a shit about her than the showâs EPs do #but sure whine about how FELICITY - a fictional character - is the problem #and not just that Arrow is a shitshow run by hacks who are bad at their jobs ad look down at their audiences #(ESPECIALLY their female fanbase) #i donât even go here anymore i stopped watching midway through s4 and i havenât looked back beyond the occasional gifset #but ugh #seeing people be petty about felicity STILL irritates me #she is not the problem she has never been the problem if you think she is then congrats youâre another fandom misogynist# well done bravo how original fuck off now bye #COUGH #yeah so turns out i had some stuff to get off my chest #this has been a tags rant UR WELCOME #felicity smoak#arrow @gnimaerd
The amount of people who genuinely believe Felicity wronged Oliver somehow by not staying and talking it out with him instead of breaking up with him truly astounds me.
i think the word âwrongedâ is precisely whatâs the problem with this idea. it makes it into who did what to whom and simplifies everything. it tries to shovel the blame on just one of them - whichever of them, when its supposed to be more complicated than that. (supposed to be - idk if it was. the way this show executes its ideas is the main reason why its so dead to me)
i have to believe that these ppl had deep, inescapable reasons for acting the way they did. both of them. that both made false steps that are based on character traits which inevitably lead to who they are, as people.Â
Oliver lied because he was afraid heâd lose everything and presented with the choice between stalling and confronting a risk such as that, he will choose to stall ever time, hoping and planning to somehow fix the situation without further collateral damage. (no, i do not take the âultimatumâ as a valid excuse. it was blatant plot device with more holes than Swiss cheese. case in point: he could have told felicity that something was wrong, sth personal, but he had made a promise to keep it a secret, until he could win this personâs trust. that it wasnt a safety issue - debatable, for william - but his hands were bound.).
Felicity left him, because despite understanding him and his reasons very well -
(i keep losing years off my life any time someone mentions ableism together with felicity here; how she didnât of know his mental condition or wasnt understanding/tolerant of it.Â
is it possible to sleep in the same bed with someone for a year and not know there?s sth wrong with them? for felicity âmysteries bug meâ smoak?Â
despite how the show insists on it, its not felicityâs job to be oliverâs light, healing, salvation, or anything else. he has those things inside himself - Â even though he needs mroe help than most, cause heâs been through more than most. but they dont live outside of him. thatâs reductive to oliver and objectifying of felicity.Â
and iâd rather not infantilize, simplify or insult the intelligence of these characters. to me, itâs perfectly natural that after years of working together in high-tension situations, they know and understand each otherâs mental pitfalls quite well, and that their conflicts are human, not stupid cause âso much happened and they didnât talk like normal peopleâ. thatâs âshowâ logic.)Â Â
- she felt hurt and betrayed and alone and she didnât want to build a life with someone who could make her feel like that, after she dared to trust in ways she hadnât before. after knowing that love was real and love could still hurt in all the ways she most fears, maybe she though love just wanst enough. she didnât blame him for how he was or why he did what he did. it wasnât about oliver!!! she saw her life as if would be with him and, in that moment of heartbreak, it seemed to her a lonely life. she would be unhappy and her unhappiness would make oliver unhappy. so she said no. Â
and thatâs the soft version. the raging angry and fucking destroyed inside version is that she doubted everything and everyone, and didnt want a single thing or person on earth to touch her anymore ever. that she saw the patterns in oliverâs behavior and decided to fall back into her own that had kept her safe and balanced until that moment, because no, the pain wasnât worth it. just like oliver thought the risk of her leaving him wasnât worth it - his own pattern. so felicity closed up onto herself and said fuck everything.Â
so what if she did? iâd like to meet the person who loses the person they love most, their whole future, and stays gracious and accepting, graceful and giving. who is that person? not me for sure, not any real person. i dont personally thing what felicity did was selfish, but so what if it was? what is wrong with that? with watching out for herself? whatâs so wrong with saying âfuck TLC when ppl rip you heart out but theyâre sorryâ âfuck sacrifice and fuck the glorification of female sacrifice paving the way for the normalization of female painâ âfuck givingâ âfuck nurturingâ âfuck you madonna-model, i am a person, fuck that halo you want to stick over my head, shove it where the sun donât shineâ.Â
whatâs so wrong with taking the breathing room to be ugly?Â
any one of those reasons are valid reasons and character pitfalls. these can be places to grow from. mistakes to learn from. and if it leads them back to each other, awesome. if not, whatever. Â
honestly man, i think people who think felicity wronged oliver by what she did, how she reacted, truly do not take the time to put any of her actions in any kind of emotional context. they either lack the means to do so or just dont want to because its way easier to demonize one party tahn⌠idk, assume both are people. oliverâs emotions are served to us on a platter, he doesnt really need that much work from us. as it should be with all characters! but felicityâs ⌠not so much. you have to care. you have to try and empathize. and you either chose to do that, or you chose not to.Â
in the end its as simple as people finding out that when it comes to women and non-white ppl onscreen - there is just a deficit of empathy there and that has its own name, depending on who one is punishing with it. âwrongedâ definitely isnt the world im looking for here.
WHATS WRONG WITH BEING UGLY - SOMETHIG IS WRONG WITH THAT ONLY WHEN YOURE A WOMAN. YOU BECOME THE HARSH BITCH LIKE LAUREL OR TEH UNDESERVING OF LOVE AND FORGIVENESS LIKE FELICITY YOU BECOM MONSTROUS AND A VILLAIN EVEN WHEN YOURE NOT WHILE THE SHOW GOES TO FUCKIGN RIDDICULOUS LENGTHS TO MAKE OLIVER A MONSTER. HE IS VIOLENT A KILLER HE ENJOYS IT HE IS ⌠FUCK MAN IF YOU WANTED AND DIALED THE EMPATHY FOR OLIVER TO THE SAME DEGREE THAT IT IS FOR  FELICITY DO YOU KNOW WHAT OLIVER WOULD BE? A REMORECELESS KILLER A LIAR A MAIPULATOR. SELFISH ASSHOLE WHO DOESNT GIVE TOW SHITS ABOUT WHAT HE DESTROYS AS LONG AS HE GETS WHAT HE WANTS. HE CAN NEVER SEE THE PAIN OF OTHERS UNLESS IT SOMHOW LEADS BACK TO HIM. I COULD GO ON . IT COULD GET INTERESTING. THE SHOW HAS LITERALLY HAMMERED TEHSE DETAILS OF OLIVERâS PERSONALITY TO OUR FACES AND YET I DONT SEE FANDOM IN GENERAL LOVING HIM ANY LESS FOR THEM WELL⌠THATS A LIE OF COURSE I DO. BUT ALL TEH SAME IF THE OLIVER MISINTERPRETATION OF CHARACTER IS AT 1/10 FELICITYâS IS FROM 9/10 GOING TO SELF-INSERT AND THAT IS BOTH THE WRITERS AND THE FANDOMâS FAULT .ADRI MY APOLOGIES FOR TEH RANT. I COUDLNT SLEEP AND I DIDNT WANT TO WRITE SO THIS HAPPENED ARROW THOUGHTS FELICITY SMOAK THOUGHTS OLIVER QUEEN THOUGHTS
Nodding along to all of this. I find it hilarious that we recently just saw Oliver admit that he liked killing people, yet most of the reaction from people was âaw poor guyâ, whereas people still call Felicity a murderer after Havenrock. At the end of the day, Felicity could save every beloved character in the Arrowverse and people would have issue with it. As for the break up, everything is nonsensical to me; the writing, the justification and the reaction. For people who blame Felicity and see her as being the bad guy, I really just wonder about their own relationships. Would they just accept it if they found out that the person they were going to marry had a secret kid, had lied about it, and then once you found out about it, they decided; after talking to everyone else but you, that they were going to send that kid away. The writers execution was terrible. None of it made sense. And them using Thea as a tool to tell the audience that if she thinks Oliverâs doing the right thing keeping secrets, a girl who hates being lied to, then he must be doing the right thingâŚ
We need to go to the BRB, itâs BRB time, weâre BRB-ing.
Hillary at the Women In the World Summit - April 6, 2017
So you don't answer questions or take requests unless someone is threatening you or cussing you out. Explains season 5
Thatâs not true. Â I also reply when someone accuses me of being sexist. :)
We donât have to accuse you.
You do a pretty good job of demonstrating that on your own.
Hahaha! Because whatâs funnier that explaining yet another female characterâs absence by equating her with being a sex worker. Itâs even funnier when itâs a well-respected older female character, because hey thatâs even grosser!
Do I need to explain why this is gross? Actually, with your tendency to dismiss everything you say with âwhy canât you little ladies just take a joke?â, Iâm guessing you donât get it.Â
Do your own homework on this one. Here, Iâll get you started.
Iâm also thinking you were bracing yourself here for the wrong reasons. Are you familiar with the concept of agency?
Okay. Okay. Iâm taking deep breaths here. Actually, noâWHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU.
With apologies for getting personal, but GOD. DAMN. You have kids, right? Do you have daughters? Do you know women? Would you ever, ever, ever want to describe one of their relationships this way? Would you ever say to one of your daughters, âHey, if you were just nice to that boy, if you just said you loved him, maybe he wouldnât have tried to kill you?â Would you ever say that to a battered woman or the family of a murder victim?
JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, MAN.
Here we have a dish of sexism, racism, and false liberalism, with an extra helping of derailing.
Enjoy.
Hey kids! Itâs not stalking if itâs FOR BUSINESS REASONS!
What the fuck. JustâŚwhat the ever loving fuck were you thinking.
And now for the exemple du jour.
It would have been easy to deal with this. Say: Hey, I thought I was making a funny joke, but I see where you guys are coming from on this. It is a little dismissive toward women in fandom, who already have enough trouble being accepted and understood in media. Sorry about that, Iâll try to do better.
But nope: then came âcontext.â
âŚbecause repeating yourself explains it?
Nope, didnât work. All those uppity ladies are still mad. Letâs try mansplaining, thatâll do the trick!
Ah, the pièce de rĂŠsistance. The pinnacle of sexist douchebaggery. The one true sign of a problematic point. âWhy canât you girls just take a joke?â
Because itâs not a joke. Because itâs not funny. Because weâve heard it before.
Also: because fuck you, thatâs why.
Now, I know what youâre thinking! âWow, itâs so easy to go back and find things that I willingly said on the internet and in front of people which sound legitimately bad on their own but especially bad when put together in a record!â
You know whatâs easier? Listening to criticism and apologizing when youâre wrong. We call that growth.
Much easier than being a sexist, whiny man-baby with apparently zero self-reflection, donât you think?
Haaaaaaaaaa
Yes. This movie needs to happen. Omg.
âIf the day ends, and I havenât fucked something up, then I feel OK.â â Oscar Isaac
This is one dance party 106-year-old Virginia McLaurin will never forget. To celebrate Black History Month, watch her fulfill her dream of visiting the White House and meeting President Obama.
The seat of the soul, the thing that makes us human, is choice. That is the single thing that elevates us above anything else. We choose to be, and we choose to kill. We choose to save. We choose to not look the other way. We choose to look at the sunset or we choose to look at the eyes of the person next to us. Thatâs what makes our life experience. Those are the notes of the symphony that weâre going to be. A choice is not to miss, a choice is to embrace; a choice is to enshrine what you want to be. What you want to leave behind.
