The effects of drugs on consciousness provide the most convincing evidence that awareness depends on the brain. This may seem obvious, but I mention it because there are many people who believe that their mind is independent of their brain, and can even survive after its death. This kind of theory becomes very awkward to sustain once you begin to understand the effects of psychoactive drugs. … In 1954, Aldous Huxley (1894-1963), author of Brave New World, took mescaline for the first time and described it as an opening of the ‘doors of perception’. Ordinary things appeared colourful and fantastic; everything around him became miraculous and the world appeared perfect in its own ‘isness’. His descriptions resemble those of mystical experiences, and indeed some people describe such drugs as ‘entheogens’, or releasers of the God within This raises the interesting question of whether drugs can induce genuine religious experiences. In a famous study, American minister and physician Walker Pahnke gave pills to twenty divinity students during the traditional Good Friday service. Half took a placebo and experienced only mild religious feelings, but half had psilocybin, and, of these, eight reported powerful mystical experiences. Critics dismiss these as somehow inferior to ‘real’ mystical experiences, but this implies that we know what ‘real’ mystical experiences are.

Should I tell my family that I'm atheist? They sometimes bother me but I just say "ok" and end up not praying and they have never noticed/gotten mad at me. Should I only tell them if they ask? I am 16

Hi, I know how you are feeling but my suggestion is to not say anything for now. At your age I think it’s too early.. I also don’t know how religious your parents are and how they would react.. It’s better to wait, as long as they’re not hurting you or hindering your education and progress in life with their religious dogma then just let it be.

Putting a live dog, or any animal, in boiling water, or a hot oven, or using a blow torch on cats, is not only blatantly wrong, without further explanation---but if one is necessary it is TORTURE. The 'reason' that is given for cooking animals alive is that they simply "taste better" after their bodies are adrenaline-soaked with fear and pain. China is making so many strides to become a first world country, but with all due respect, with this kind of accepted culinary method, China AND Korea will be looked upon as backward nations ..

If you think that it would be impossible to improve upon the Ten Commandments as a statement of morality, you really owe it to yourself to read some other scriptures. Once again, we need look no further than the Jains: Mahavira, the Jain patriarch, surpassed the morality of the Bible with a single sentence: “Do not injure, abuse, oppress, enslave, insult, torment, torture, or kill any creature or living being.” Imagine how different our world might be if the Bible contained this as its central precept. ^THIS. If you think the bible is in any way the most superior moral document, you really owe it to yourself to read some other scriptures. Non violence, forgiveness, charity: none of these concepts originated in the bible and only pure ignorance of other traditions would have you think so. Morality is a human project.

Egyptian Arrested for the Crime of Forming a Facebook Group for Atheists

This story is tough to verify, but it wouldn’t be very surprising if it were true. According to the English version of the Egyptian daily newspaper Al-Ahram, a 20-year-old (unnamed) student at Suez Canal University was arrested for committing an awful crime against religion: He formed a Facebook group about atheism.
