Teaching you things you should know part two:

Cardiac Arrest and CPR!

Cardiac arrest is when the heart suddenly stops beating. It is important that you know that CARDIAC ARREST ≠ HEART ATTACK. A heart attack is when the supply of blood to the heart is blocked suddenly, but the heart is STILL WORKING, so there you DON'T START CPR!!

1) As cardiac arrest is sudden, it might look like they have fallen unconscious. First, you call out their name/ask if they're okay. No response means you have some pain stimuli. This can be from lightly shaking them or pinching them on the earlobe or just anywhere really. No response means you check for a pulse. You can check by the neck or at the wrists, but DON'T USE YOUR THUMB!! In simple terms, thumbs kind of have their own pulse, meaning you could feel your own and think it's theirs. But uh oh! This is about CPR, so this person does NOT have a pulse, which leads you to number two

2) CALL AN AMBULANCE!! Oh my GOD call an ambulance first and they'll assist you in everything until the paramedics arrive. If you're in a public space you can ask someone else to call an ambulance before you start chest compressions.

3) CPR: Use the heel of your hand to push firmly in the centre of their chest at 2 pushes per second, or to various songs such as Staying Alive, HOT TO GO, or Baby Shark. Put your dominant hand on top of your other hand for the most strength. Now, this is important. DON'T STOP UNTIL THE PARAMEDICS ARRIVE! I think on average, an ambulance call for cardiac arrest takes around three minutes (?) so you'll need the stamina. It is also good to make sure you have a second (someone to fill in for you during CPR if you get too tired)

4) Broken Rib- During CPR, you might feel a crack. This is a rib breaking due to the pressure. You might want to, but I'm pretty sure you DON'T stop after a broken rib, as it doesn't affect the success rate of CPR (?). It's better to have a broken rib than to be dead.

5) Once the paramedics arrive, they will step in and take over. Remember, YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE THE HERO! if you are uncomfortable or not confident in your skills, you are ALLOWED to step back and let someone else do CPR or call the paramedics. You are not pressured to do anything, and if you feel you can't do it, don't feel forced to do it!
