My chalk drawing was inspired by Keith Haring’s iconic style, known for bold lines, bright colors and energetic figures. I used his classic pose of a figure holding up heart to represent love and positivity. I also was inspired to use lines around the limbs to add movement. It was a fun thing to do in the nice weather outside!

I found it interesting that the heart-shape was not a symbol of love until the thirteenth century. During this time the heart-shape was used in illustrations depicting romance and “courtly love”. Furthermore, the heart was usually illustrated upside down up until the fourteenth century. In the fifteenth century, the heart became to symbolize what we know it as today, additionally it became a suit on playing cards.

For the assignment this week I used a bunch of different phrases I saw in magazine advertisements that were directed toward women. One phrase I changed was “Makeup a men intended” because a common problem in the beauty industry is high criticism from men when it comes to women. Another example is using a photo of Evil Queen from Snow White with an advertisement I found saying “Feeling like ‘crap’, find the root cause”, symbolizing her jealousy of Snow White and the lengths she went because of it. This relates to the beauty industry because women are constantly comparing themselves to each other because of unrealistic beauty standards.
I chose the song The Man by Taylor Swift because I think it is a song that empowers women and describes the double standards and societal expectations placed on women versus men.
For this weeks assignment I used this cool light that my friend had to create finger puppets on the wall. My roommate’s helped me make the finger puppets which made the assignment fun.
For my arte povera project I decided to take things from around my house that I used throughout the past week. The playdough is something my roommate who is a teacher brought home and I was playing around with. The butterflies, were a part of a decoration I used for my friend’s birthday and I thought they looked cool stamped on the background as well. I also included the end of a tea bag that my roommate drinks with an inspiring quote on it. Next, I included receipts from my roommate and I’s latest grocery shop run. I then cut out the number 22 out of a Coors light box, representing that I will be turning 22 on April 8th. Lastly, I had a pair of old jeans that I cut up that I cross-hatched onto the paper.
Although these items would be considered trash to the normal eye, to me they represent all of the little bonding moments I have with my roommates throughout each week. Especially coming to the end of my senior year, I cherish these small moments even ore.
My Pop Art piece focuses on the Buffalo Bills and the football industry. Living in Buffalo, I know how popular and praised the Buffalo Bills are and when I was looking through Buffalo News magazines I saw a lot of advertisments for Bills merchandise.
I wanted to show how impactful and close the Bills Mafia is by including pictures of fans and a book titled “Nowhere Else You’d Rather Be”. I also cut out of the title of each Buffalo News magazine (“Buffalo”), to recreate the repitition used in some Pop Art.
The NFL is a major sports industry in America, generating a lot of revenue. NFL merchandise revenue is projected to reach $7.60bn in 2025, showing how many people in the United States are engaged and willing to invest in their football teams. Furthermore, I found that Josh Allen was ranked 11th on the NFLPA’s Top 50 Player Sales List until March 1, 2023 to February 29, 2024. I think this shows how influential a singular player can be for fans. Overall, I think the consumption of football or sports merchandise is a positive consumer behavior because it is supporting something that they enjoy and love.

For the midterm I decided to use Adobe on my iPad and then recreate that image on a canvas. I had so much fun curating the abstract artwork on my device, I did feel that it was easier than the hands-on work because I was able to fix mistakes, use a variety of different tools, and easily access a variety of photos and stickers to collage into my artwork. Nonetheless, the process of recreating the artwork on canvas was fun. I appreciated being able to work hands on because I think it can be a therapeutic activity.
For this weeks assignment I was inspired by both Brooke and Hanas pieces. I felt that their color palette was really similar and I wanted to incorporate those warm colors, especially orange, into my piece. For Hanas piece I also took inspiration from the eyes that she collaged and drew by surrounding my background with a picture I found of an eye. I also used Brookes’s techniques of using quotes and collaging a ton of different pieces that I found.
For this weeks assignment I created a pice inspired by the album old data in a new machine. I experimented with the color red and using a dark background so the red pops. I chose to go slightly more abstract with this and I used magazine cut outs, colored pencil, and black paper. The album is very noisy and upbeat, and I wanted to create the same effect in my artwork.
I really love how the colors stick out on the black background! I also think the colors you chose compliment each other really well!

For this art assignment, I chose the album "Orange Blood" by Mt. Joy. My favorite song from this album is called Bathroom Light. I included lyrics from Bathroom Light, as well as the song called Phenomenon. I was very inspired by this album cover because of its potential to be reworked into something colorful and eye catching. Its funky and has endless opportunities for an artist, so I knew this would be a fun project. I tried to incorporate all the colors this album has but also include a lot of orange themed items. As I was making this piece, the song Orange Blood kept popping in my head! I truly had so much fun making this and cannot wait for my next project.

For this week’s assignment, I started by picking my complementary color combination for the background. I chose purple and yellow because I felt that they looked aesthetically better with the magazine pieces I chose for my collage fashion outfit. The first thing I chose that I based the rest of my outfit on was the football jersey. I thought this was good to use for this assignment because the Super Bowl was just the other day. I then put a cutout on the jersey that I found that said, “I love me” which I thought added humor and cuteness. Furthermore, I decided to make a pair of baggy jeans with oil pastels because I could not find pants that matched the outfit correctly, which I paired with Converse shoes. Lastly, I chose the astronaut helmet with a bow on it because the person I created feels out of this world in their outfit. Overall I wanted to create a fun take on streetwear style, which heavily consists of jerseys, bag pants, and sneakers in today’s society.
For this week's assignment I decided to draw inspiration for my artwork from the album "The Lumineers", by The Lumineers. For my artwork I decided to go for a vintage aesthetic because the album cover includes an old polaroid that I feel gives a nostalgic feel. I was inspired by this and decided to use the polaroid in my artwork by blending different collage pieces that reminded me of the songs on the album but that also drew from the nostalgic and vintage feeling of the original picture on the album cover. My favorite songs from this album are "Dead Sea" and "Flowers in Your Hair". For the song "Dead Sea", I decided to include elements that reminded me of the song like the ocean and seashells. I also included my favorite quote from the song that I burned the end of to tie into the vintage vibe I was going for. I then included a cool photograph I found of a woman with flowers in her hair that I felt represented the song "Flowers in Your Hair" and also blended well with the other collage pieces. Other songs that inspired collage pieces I chose include "Flapper Girl" and "Stubborn Love". Overall I genuinely enjoyed making this and it made me feel even more connected with the album!

Hi everyone! I am Athena and I am a senior here at Saint Bonaventure. I am from Buffalo, NY and I am majoring in psychology. In my free time I like to read, listen to music, and spend time with my friends and family. I also have three dogs! I have not taken an art class here yet but I am super excited to!
Final Piece #2
For my second piece I chose to take inspiration from oliviarusso2 and her collage piece of creating a face using objects. This piece really stood out to me because of the bright background contrasted with the dark colors of the lips and beret. Similar, the kiwi eyes and pear nose also stood out to me. I was inspired by the different collage elements and the city background to create my own version. I chose to incorporate the complimentary colors of red and green in the background. I chose to do a summer city sunset as the mine background which was inspired from Olivia’s light city background. I then chose to create a contrast background using dark green. This reminds me of New York City and how the city comes to life after the sunsets. I then chose to use red as a color of the money signs on the background to compliment the green. I then chose to take inspiration from the pear on Olivia’s piece and create a woman’s body. I also felt that the pear was a good element to incorporate to juxtapose the phrase “The Big Apple”, when referring to the city. She is holding a carton of cigarettes and a martini which I thought were two items that fit the piece. I also incorporated a collage on the green background using a disco ball, a pair of lips, and a pin that says, “Art if anything you can get away with”. This quote reminds me of how people go to New York City to chase their dreams and how the city speaks to them through art, like this piece.
I will title the piece “City in Her Hands”, to address both the visual elements of the women depicted in the center of the city, and the deeper environment of strong women especially those who conquer male-dominated spaces.

Final Piece 1
For my first piece I was inspired by this piece by Kendall. I was inspired to also do a collage where I included luxury items and timeless symbols such as jewelry, clocks and Marilyn Monroe.
If I were to name piece it would be called, “Literally Just a Girl”, which connects with the deeper meaning of the artwork, which highlights the societal pressures faced but women in different eras. I chose this phrase because it is featured in my collage. To make this collage I used a combination of magazine and online pictures that I cut out and meshed.
Visually, I wanted my collage to be appealing, but when you look a little deeper you can find a more significant meaning. For the colors I decided to use the complementary colors, green and red. I did this to contrast the colors and make each item stand out against the green background. For the visuals in the collage, I wanted to use a mix of images that embodied themes of timelessness and luxury and featured influential women. On a deeper level, a hope to inspire conversations about the influence technology has had overtime and the different societal pressures faced my women. For example, I used a “no phones” image and a visual that used the word “selfie” to contradict each other. In both of these eras’ women have been subject to intense judgment in society, but especially today social media has only exemplified these issues. Also, the use of iconic influential women such as Marilyn Monroe and Taylor Swift, shows the shift in how society treats women. While both are subject to strict judgement, they are criticized in different ways. Marilyn Monroe was subjected to a lot of objectifications where she wasn’t given a voice as a woman, and Taylor Swift has been criticized for being too outspoken. Although both are terrible and degrading to women, it shows how views against women have shifted from objectifying them and not highlighting their purpose and voice beyond that, to silencing women who “are too outspoken”. To also emphasize this shift I used phrases such as, “literally just a girl”. Today, this is a funny phrase that has become viral from TikTok, it is a sarcastic phrase that is used when a girl is joking about not wanting to do something because they are just a girl.
