he remembered the first time he lost his pokemon - when roar was still a tiny fletchling that had just been abandoned by his flock, wally had grown accustomed to the bird hooking his talons against the fabric of his sweater, until he eventually realized when looking at his empty shoulder that roar was nowhere to be found. he remembered franctically looking for him, heart thumping like a hurricane inside his chest and making it impossible to breathe from his ribs, as if roar had taken his lungs with him.
wally knelt down to lay a comforting hand against the child’s shoulder. the boy looked up at him with tears welling in his eyes and dived into his arms, crying into the crook of his neck. ❛ hey, hey, it’s . . . it’s okay, ❜ he said softly, rubbing his warm palms over the path of the boy’s back. ❛ it’ll be okay . . . we’ll find your skitty, we . . . we promise. ❜ he threaded his fingers through the child’s hair and tried to smile, then he stood from the floor.
he turned to the stranger, heart full as the moon on his throat as he attempted to calm himself down. wally still found it difficult to talk to people he didn’t know very long, which made it impossible to easily make friends. but every time he tried to open his lips, his words were dislodged at the roof of his mouth, as if every letter were dislocated, and he had to search it in between the gaps of his teeth. wally’s hand went to the pokeballs latched to his satchel and released the pokemon he knew would quickly find the skitty among the mass of people in the city.
❛ i h -- have . . . i have . . . them . . . ❜ wally gestured to his talonflame, who immediately flew to rest on his shoulder, and the massive garchomp that protectively loomed behind his smaller body. ❛ roar, ganymede, ❜ he said gently, patting his pokemon’s heads with each of his hands. ❛ can you find this skitty for me ? ❜ both pokemon took a look at the locket, carefully inspecting them, before nodding their heads.
