Dorothea thrust the dagger into Hubert’s stomach with such force he stumbled backwards. His back slammed against the table laden with all the accoutrements of dinner, and a candelabra with unlit candles toppled over with a resounding crash. His knees gave up under his weight, but still, he reached out towards the songstress with wide-eyed wonder. “Ti soffoca il sangue? Muori dannato!” she spat out, clutching the bloody dagger in a white-knuckle grip.

She raised her hand as though to strike again. “Muori! Muori!” Hubert’s arm fell and now rested limp over his chest. “Muori,” Dorothea repeated, but her voice cracked on the last syllable.

A long shadow fell over the unmoving mage when she leaned over him. The earlier anger disappeared from her face, leaving behind a terrifying blank mask. “È morto. Or gli perdono.”

Slowly, she raised her eyes, her lips parted, as though in surprise at seeing the audience. The crowd held its breath, completely under the spell of her performance. Dorothea spared Hubert one last, disdainful glance and uttered, as if only to herself: “E avanti a lui tremava tutta la città.”
