Chikage’s eyes had a look of enthusiasm on them. “Oh, um…yeah. I like puzzle games a lot too. It’s fun to speed things up while trying to think at the same time.” She said, restraining herself and trying not to be super excited to someone she just met.

“I just like that it’s a way to pass time without feeling like you’re completely wasting your brain away.” Morgana wasn’t fully used to this whole ‘spending time like a normal girl’ deal yet, and those kind of games were ones that made her feel less like she should be doing something better. “Not that it’s bad if you enjoy them in a different way.”

“Might I suggest trying something immersive next time then?” Chikage offered. “Something like a single player RPG, where you get to become someone else and take on a different role. Being in different time periods or scenarios that shouldn’t exist is quite immersive enough.”

“Different time periods, huh.” Morgana wasn’t exactly raring to be reminded of her previous life nor the periods that she sent those souls to for her revenge, but maybe this classmate of hers had other ideas. “I’m not really the type to relive the past, but do you have any particular suggestions?”

“T-Thank you for waiting, here’s your orders…” the waitress gave them a big smile, before setting their food and hot beverages on the table. “If you have anything else you need, please don’t be afraid to call!” And with that, she scampered off somewhere.

“Well, let’s dig in.” Chikage said as she took a sip. “Don’t worry, I trust that you’ll do the work. You just seem like the type of person that can get things done.” She then suddenly ran out of topics to talk about. Whoops, gotta improvise. “Uh…do you have any hobbies? Like…uh..video games?” smooth, Chikage.

“Video games?” They weren’t something Morgana was familiar with growing up, but now was different. “Actually, I have been trying out some handheld games lately.” Michel’s stuff she borrowed. “Some of those puzzle games can be quite enjoyable. Have you been playing some as well?”

Chikage seemed to have obtained the gist of the situation, at least, from what she was being told. “That’s fair, I’m kind of in the same boat. I’m not with my family, just dorm-ing at the school. The government pays for my finances for the work I do for the-” She paused for a bit, covering her mouth. “Well, oops. Let’s just pretend you didn’t hear that.”

Morgana’s ears perked at the mention of work, but decided not to pry - she herself had things she’d rather not share with just everyone, after all. “If you have other work to do yourself, should you really be offering to take more of the work share for this report? Even if you mean well, you shouldn’t be careless about your actions.”

“Don’t worry about it. I pride myself in being able to manage multiple things at once if I put my all into it. It’s the first time I’ve done a group thing with someone in awhile, so I don’t want to let you down.” Chikage said with confidence towards her classmate.

“Well then, I’ll be expecting good things from you. Of course, I won’t just be slacking either,” Morgana said, smirking shortly. Perhaps working with this classmate of her wouldn’t be too bad, if she’d be keeping to her word. “Oh, is that the waitress back with our food?”

“Certainly, I’ll be back with your orders!” She grabbed their menus before heading off. Meanwhile, Chikage seemed pretty happy about finally being able to treat someone for once.

“R-Right, anyway. The project—do you have personal preferences on which animal we should use? And how shall we divvy up the work? If you have a part-time job or anything like that, I don’t mind taking a little bit more of the share.” Chikage offered.

“Animals, huh.” Morgana remembered how she thought she’d be reborn as a butterfly or a cat this time. “A cat, maybe? As for the work share… I do have a part time job in the weekends - “ she recently became a kitchen hand at the cafe at her apartment building “ - but I’ll still have time to do my share.” She did wonder how Chikage thought that she might have a part-time job, however.

“A cat sounds perfect.” She thought of Takashima as a cat, before catching herself back into business mode. “Cats are objectively the best animal, especially the ones with black fur. Anyway, I also work but it’s more of an on-call thing.” She tried to be vague with it as best as she could. “Not to worry, I’m quite versed with technology.” She commented, checking off things in her internal list. 

“Would you mind if I…try to get to know you more?” Stupid Chikage, what kind of question is that? “A-Ah, sorry. That came out of nowhere. It’s just…I rarely talk to people outside my group of friends.” It was true. Her group had a stable bond with one another, but it wouldn’t hurt to branch out.

Black cats and witches. Morgana twitched as the thought passed her mind, but brushed it off. Chikage wasn’t someone from her past, she had no way of knowing. What really jolted her out of her thoughts, though, was her group partner’s next question about knowing her more. “Friends…” Thinking about it, she didn’t really have anyone she met regularly and would call friends besides Michel & Giselle. “Actually, I don’t do that much either. I’m not good with getting friendly with others…” Wait, was it really okay for her to start opening up like this?

“Ah…yeah.” Chikage nodded, feeling that sentiment resonate within her. “Same here, really…I’ve had people I’ve known from middle school, but we’re all in different classes now so it’s not exactly the same.” She paused for a bit, looking as if she remembered a bitter memory. “If you aren’t against me being forward, you’ve gone through a lot, haven’t you?” Chikage conveyed, sensing negative energy from this person. “I don’t mean to pry, but…I can probably help.”

Being asked that only made Morgana wonder about the person in front of her. Just what had she gone through that made her think that? Morgana doubted she’d believe it even if she told her the story of her previous lives, but at the very least... maybe it would be nice to believe someone could understand what she’d gone through in this lifetime. “I... chose not to live with my family anymore. It took time to figure out how to support myself, but I’ve found out just enough for now,” she said, leaving out the details. “From your questions... you seem like you haven’t been having it exactly easy either.”

Morgana had never heard of the place before, but then again, pretty much the only cafe she hung around lately was the one in the same building as her apartment. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to check it out. “Let’s go there.” As soon as she said that, she was hit with a craving, but not for coffee. “Wonder if they have good teas too.”

“H-Hello! Welcome to Hazawa Coffee!” The waitress politely bowed, seating the two of them. “May I take your order? We have many coffee and tea selections available! I recommend having a pastry with our drinks! The flavors really go together!” The waitress suggested, being enthusiastic about her work.

“That’s really tempting…I could go for that, actually. I’ll try out your caramel apple coffee, with some of your iced sugar cookies.” Chikage said, passing the menu to Morgana. “What about you? Feel free to order whatever actually, I’ll pay.” Chikage just wanted to say that, she’s never treated someone before.

“No, I’ll…” Morgana instinctively tried to refuse the offer. She was used to being the one on the giving, blessing end. But she really needed to save up every single penny for now. “Thank you, I appreciate it.” She then turned to the waitress, “I’ll have some chamomile tea with vegetable pie.”

Chikage Koori.” She said, introducing herself towards her partner. “It’s a pleasure to work with you then, Morgana.” This person seemed reasonable enough…hopefully. “Did you want to plan things over coffee? We can talk about how we’ll divide the work amongst ourselves.” What’s this? Chikage inviting someone else? She really must be taking this work seriously.

“Coffee...” Morgana pondered the invitation. She recalled her first attempt at being friendly with someone her age, centuries ago, which ended... badly. But that was perhaps an unfair comparison - Chikage seemed a reasonable enough person. Besides, she had other people to support her now - if anything bad did happen, Michel was a phone call away. “Sure, we can do that. Do you have any place in mind?”

It’s been surprising for Chikage, she’s never expected to make it towards her second year of high school, yet here she was.She was occasionally needed to do hero work, but nothing heavy as she used to do back in middle school. Still, she found herself in quite a pickle: She was paired to do group work with someone in class.

“A group assignment with someone…I barely talk to anyone but the others…” She would’ve taken literally anyone else, she would’ve taken Tamako. Tamako. Nonetheless, she decided to bite the bullet and approach her partner as class was ending and everyone was leaving. “Hey, I’m not really best at this group thing, but did you want to start with exchanging contact info first?”

While finally being able to be just a normal girl rather than a witch trapped in an endless desire for revenge was bringing Morgana previously-unknown freedom, it also brought other responsibilities… such as school. She was never one to mingle much with others, and she didn’t foresee that changing just because she had moved to a new one. Still, if she wanted those scholarships for her further studies she’d need to keep up her grades, which would include not skimping on this group assignment. Ugh. Fortunately(?), her group mate was the one to approach first - and she didn’t seem like the overly cheerful meddling type, at least. “Sure. I don’t use any of those fancy messaging services, though… will a phone number do?”

“Phone number…sure.” Chikage pulled out her phone. It was clear that her phone wasn’t of any brand that anyone’s seen before. In fact, it was her government-issued phone, displaying her phone number on it. “Will this do? Uh…” She pondered at the person’s name. Damn. she didn’t even know her partner’s own name…

“Morgana,” she said, pointedly leaving out her surname. She didn’t like being reminded of her family - there was a reason she left to move into the apartment. She glanced at her partner’s phone - an unfamiliar model. Then again, Morgana was using a model likely almost half her age, so it might just be her ignorance about these topics. “And you are...?” Maybe she should start paying more attention to her classmate’s names, at least.
