You ever read The Captain's Table Star Trek series? Specifically Where Sea Meets the Sky? I remember it vividly from the other books.

I have! Great stuff! Unfortunately, I don't remember a lot about that one - just Pike mentioning during his story that nuclear weapons damaged the ship, then quickly tried to cover for it because there was a Klingon Captain and he didn't want to let slip a potential vulnerability in Starfleet vessels. I recall the New Frontier one most vividly because it finally gave the full backstory that had been hinted at in the novels for Calhoun and I recall the Voyager one where Janeway is stranded on an alien ship for months and has to earn the respect of the crew.

Have you read any of the Star Trek novels and if so would you recommend any of them?

Oh, most certainly! I'm a big fan of Peter David's old New Frontier novels as well as the Q Continuum Trilogy. I also quite liked the DS9 relaunch books, though I only read up until Unity.

I recall you saying once that you never got into Magic The Gathering. Do you have any thoughts on the Universes Beyond cards? Those are the cards that cross over with other IP. They've done 2 sets with Marvel, 1 with Doctor Who, and recently revealed an upcoming one that will be Star Trek themed.

Dear Linkara, you didn't have a reaction to the first time Doom's scared face was revealed to us in Secret Wars. Do you have any strong feelings about it, or his unscarred face during the All-New, All-Different era?

Honestly just kind of shocked that people have told me this was the first ever time we had seen Doom's scarred face without a mask. That seems... improbable to me.

Just curious since you had Doom make a reference in your latest review; what is your general familiarity with the Scooby-Doo franchise? Is it something where you'd feel comfortable doing a review on one of its bits of media or, like Sonic, is it more just a passing pop culture osmosis kind of thing? They have crossed over with at least three different animated versions of Batman, so I'd be surprised if no one ever makes a request regarding one of them.

A lot of it is pop culture osmosis, but I admittedly watched plenty of Scooby Doo as a kid from various series, or at least what was aired on TV in the 90s. I'd be RELATIVELY comfortable covering anything for a Patreon-sponsored review, but of course some series have more continuity and whatnot than others. And as I've said, I'm a Scrappy Doo defender until death.

So since they never codified the Super human registration act in Civil War, what would you like to see? I really wish more superhero work addressed the legal and ethical issues of vigilantiism like Watchmen did.

Oversight and whatnot ARE important, so registration feels like it should be necessary... but only to a certain degree. For instance, if you're going to engage in vigilante activity, you have to note a codename, a general area of operation, powers, detailed description of costume appearance, any known enemies, etc. That way if someone breaks out of prison or is on parole, it's known that they may be going after that hero in revenge. In turn, if you're a vigilante who has broken the law or there's a warrant out for you, the registration allows people (in particular other heroes) to keep an eye out for you if you're still trying to engage in activities. Some would argue that revealing a secret identity is necessary in that case there should be a right to privacy, as well. You still need the registration to actively engage in superheroics, but it's there - again - just for the legal bureaucracy necessary for general oversight as part of the regular legal system. I'm sure others can tear this idea apart, but that's where I see it being beneficial. Aztek, a short-lived DC character, featured a form of superhero registration like that.

Opinion on modern SpongeBob? (Season 7+)

That would require me to have an opinion on classic Spongebob (pre season 7), which is very difficult because I have never watched a single episode of Spongebob in my entire life - pre or post season 7. It was JUST a little after my time when I had stopped watching Nickelodeon (the brief time I watched it again, aside from Power Rangers, was the early-2000s for Invader Zim).

What are your thoughts on the DC Compact line? If you’re unfamiliar, they budget releases of some notable comics (Batman Hush, Allstar Superman) and are the size as a regular book. Personally I find them to be a great way for people to get into comics given how cheap they are and that they are recently releases means that people will be more likely exposed to them at a store.

I saw one a while back in a shop! Love the idea, wish it had been done a long time ago.

Sorry if this was already explained in the actual video or another post, but in the Contest of Champions finale, how exactly was Bandit Chief able to cheat without the Temlans (I know I most definitely spelled that wrong) noticing? Given how he had to be careful with how he handled the Interrogation Box, it feels like "he made a fake card with image altering properties” or “he placed a spell on a legal card” wouldn’t be enough

Just a subtle bit of magic to switch out which card he'd draw next. Tiny enough to not notice if they weren't looking for it, but also not doing it every turn or getting SUCH an advantageous card that the luck would be incredible. The instant they looked deeper at it they realized "Oh, OH. Yeah, that's cheating."

I'm curious: You've talked about North American, Japanese and European comics, but how familiar are your with South American comics? Like, for example, Argentinian ones such as The Eternaut, Mafalda, Boogie el Aceitoso and Cybersix?

Like, not at all. And even the non-American stuff I have talked about before I don't know THAT much about.

Hello, excuse me if I get this wrong but your rules for Event Comics Month say only events that have a central miniseries are counted as events but does that mean other event crossovers that don't have a miniseries will not be up for consideration? Even if they have an issue 1 and 2 that starts and ends the events like X-Men Second Coming and X of Swords? OR what about HoX/PoX which I consider to be an event?

Sooo, theoretically actually by what you said, X-Men: Second Coming SHOULD actually be included in future voting. I'd normally argue that it shouldn't because the tie-ins aren't really tie-ins - they're chapters in the full story... except I have War of the Gods on there for DC, which follows the same format (it's just with four issues instead of two to bookend it). I'll leave it replies and reblogs if I should add it for the future. X of Swords would not - the issues you refer to are one-shots with different titles, not a miniseries, so it's a crossover storyline and not an event by my rules, similar to how Age of Apocalypse was bookended by an Alpha and Omega issue. House of X and Powers of X are just individual miniseries that changed the direction of the X-Men line. While they are major story moments, as far as I know there are no tie-ins to them - they're just really big, important miniseries. Call them an event by your own rules if you'd like, they just don't fit with how I'd describe an event.

How big is you apartment and how much rent do you pay?

I own a house, though "own" is a bit misleading since I pay a mortgage and will continue to do so for the next few decades. I don't know how appropriate it is to actually say how much said mortgage is, but I will say that when I bought it, the mortgage was lower than the rent in the rental house we lived in. However, taxes go up, escrow gets underestimated, then overestimated, and now I am paying more than I ever have before... and I've already been told it's going to go up again due to the escrow, so there's something to look forward to. -_-

But hey, since the house is ours, we can actually paint it how we want and not the ugly brown color the rent house company previously insisted upon.

So do you have any criticisms of the superhero genre you would actually like addressed? Because to me works like Marshall law and both iterations of the Boys came off more contrarian than deconstructionist.

I would like to return to more single-issue plots. You can have an ongoing storyline, certainly, but having a story with a beginning, middle, and end in a single 22-page book would be very nice. Most stories these days are written to be 4-6 parters to be released in a trade.

So I think that starstruck guy is a good example (if he’s not just a troll bot) of something I’ve seen in this kind of mindset: they think women, LGBTQ people, and people of color are outsides because ‘they’ve never seen them in nerd spaces before.’ And there’s a reason for that that can be answered like this: what is your local comic book store like? What’s the vibe?

Because I’ve been to comic stores all across the country, and quite a few of them give off the vibe of ‘gross man cave.’ No duh you don’t see women in a place like that. Hell, I’m a dude and I don’t usually like going to stores like that.

And in the 2000s-2010s, I made sure to avoid mentioning being autistic or Hispanic on any comic book forum sites, because I knew I would be bombarded by Mexican slang jokes (even though I’m not Mexican) and the r-slur. So it’s not that non-white, non-male, non-straight comic fans and nerds didn’t exist until the 2010s-2020s. It’s that they stayed the hell away from places that were openly hostile or creepy to them.

No, you're completely right. There are plenty of stories of women not hanging out at comic shops and other supposedly dominant male spaces simply because the vibe of the places WERE hostile to them.

Other than Bulk and Skull, who are your favorite Power Rangers comic relief duos?

Ignoring the fart jokes, Victor and Monty were a delight. As I said in the retrospective, seeing them get their asses kicked worked well because Victor was just such an egotistical, smug jerk. You loved how over the top, Gaston-like he was in how he thought he was the greatest ever... which made it all the more satisfying to see him fall on his face.
