Okay OKAY twist my arm
My good friend here homeschools her 3 school-aged kids. She’s a very type-b, spontaneous, relaxed person (which jives well for me because her youngest is the same age as mine and she’s really helped me chill out!), but as a frequent observer of her other, oldest kids, I am concerned about her level of indifference towards her children’s education?!
The school year ended for Hawaii the end of May and the new school year started last week. Her oldest daughter (4th grade) told me she’s still 30 lessons behind in math and 20 lessons behind in language arts FROM LAST SCHOOL YEAR but they’ve been too busy going to the beach with visitors.
2nd child in 3rd grade laughed and agreed that she’s “soooo behind too”.
Then first child said “I feel like I need a tutor for math or something.”
In my head I’m like ???? Isn’t that ????? your mom’s job ?????
I also never hear them mention anything besides math and language arts / reading and isn’t science and social studies introduced at that age? 👀 I feel like it’s sort of a pivotal learning window!
Is this alarming or is this just like unschooling / the world is their school approach? These kids are not kindergartners. They are 3rd and 4th grade! But I am a very like by the books kinda gal. I want my kid to reach milestones and know how to do things and learn. And I recognize that I am not the best person to do that! I might be too fixated on a traditional approach though.
WE (this friend and I) generally don’t talk about school because we don’t really see eye to eye on it (I know she thinks it’s insane I send my son to preschool and will send the baby daycare, I think it’s insane her kids go weeks and weeks without doing school work throughout the year and seem to be lacking knowledge in entire subjects).
Most importantly this is NOT MY BUSINESS (but also where is the oversight?)
