âIâm never taking this cowboy hat off. Iâm cowboy dad from now on. Thatâs the only thing Iâll answer to.âÂ
prettylittle-persephone:
Seph froze, her eyes wide. âTwin girls?â She stumbled over the simple words, her brows shooting up as she gave him an incredulous look. âNo. Oh, no. No, no, no.â She immediately sat up, pushing the covers off as she rummaged through her bedside table to find their first ultrasound photos. âThere is no way in hell that I am even going to have one â let alone two ââ
âSeph, it was just a dream...â He sat up, much lazier than she had. âIt was literally just a dream. You said it yourself. Come back to bed. Please?â
prettylittle-persephone:
Seph nodded slowly, chewing on the inside of her lower lip. Did he genuinely not remember one of the reasons why he had such a strong fascination with the future? âRight, yeah, just a dream.â She spoke hesitantly, flashing a small smile as he kissed her cheek. âOf course. You know you can always lay with me.â The girl intertwined their fingers, leading him to her bed before crawling back under her covers. Once they were both situated, Seph reluctantly asked, âTell me more about the dream?â
âUh, well... It was you and me. And Boyse was giving one of the twins a kiss. Saying he loved his sisters so much and was so excited to be a big brother. Then he ran off and you held the girl with the dark purple onesie and I held the girl with the light purple onesie and they werenât crying or anything. It was just nice and peaceful and it felt like home. It felt like it was real.â
prettylittle-persephone:
Sephâs stance eased as she realized that something had to be genuinely wrong for Atro to get so out of sorts over a dream. Closing her door, she took a step toward him, a concerned expression crossing her features. âItâs okay. It was just a dream, babe. Why donât you tell me about ââ She was cut short as he pressed his hand to her small bump and explained what he saw, effectively sending a small twinge of panic through her body. âWhat? No.â Seph denied it instantly, shaking her head. âNo, no. Thatâs not possible.â
âIt was just a dream. It just... It just felt so real. I donât know what to say. I just had to tell you. Iâm sorry I woke you. Hi, by the way. And I love you, by the way.â Atro leaned in and kissed her cheek. âI just was really freaking out and I was hoping I could come lay with you.â
prettylittle-persephone:
Seph had finally drifted into the most peaceful sleep sheâd had in weeks. After all, this pregnancy was tougher on her than her first â what, with all the morning sickness, backaches, and ridiculous cravings and mood swings. So it shouldnât have come as a surprise that she woke up in a rage when someone started pounding on her door. With her curly hair in her narrowed eyes and her upper lip curled, she pulled the door open. âWhat. The. Hell.â
âI had a dream or something. I donât know. It was really really real.â Atro walked into the room, pacing even more now that he was about to share the âgoodâ news with Seph. He walked over and placed his hand on her stomach, instantly closing his eyes and having to take a step back. âTwo of them.â He said quickly, holding onto the bed frame for support.Â
Atro woke quickly, sweat covering his entire body as he sat in a panic. He kicked the sheets off as he moved to find the light to switch it on. Atro paced the small single room he had for a few moments before grabbing a towel and wiping his forehead and chest. Facing the mirror, Atro threw some cold water on his face before turning back to his closet and grabbing a new shirt. He slipped it on before racing down the hall to Sephâs room. He knocked continuously until she answered.Â
prettylittle-persephone:
Seph attempted to maintain her scowl as Atro curled up beside her, but his cheerful disposition broke her negative attitude quickly. She sighed and cracked a smile, lifting the blanket enough for him to join her beneath it. âI feel like the life is being sucked out of me by a small alien. So, you know, the usual.â Seph smirked, nestling her head into the crook of his neck. âHow âbout you?â
âAt least you know when itâs all over that the small alien is gonna be hella cute.â Atro replied with a smile. âIâm doing pretty good. I already hate being away from the kid. I feel like this is the first weekend we havenât gone out there to see him.â
prettylittle-persephone:
Seph laid on the couch in the rec room, buried beneath a thick blanket sheâd brought out from her room. In spite of the sweltering heat and suffocating humidity, the redhead was freezing â something she attributed to her delicate state. Grumbling to herself, she flicked through the channels aimlessly, more to keep her hands busy than to actually find something entertaining to occupy her time.
Atro climbed onto the couch with the girl, smiling as he cozied next to her. He held her tightly, his arms resting over her stomach. âHey you.â Atro peaked under the blanket with a smile. âHow are you feeling?â
prettylittle-persephone:
âOkay.â Seph agreed quietly, rolling onto her side so she could lay her head on his chest. Although she would â and likely could â never be as optimistic as Atro, a part of her felt at ease beneath all the worry. Theyâd face their fair share of trouble, sure â after all, sheâd faced plenty during her pregnancy with Boyse â but everything would work out and they would end up perfectly happy with two little ones in the end. And that was all that mattered. âIâll make a call to the office I went to before and see if they can squeeze us in today.â
âIâll work harder on my memory. I can try the experimental stuff theyâve been talking about.â Atro said quietly, playing with her hair. âMaybe thatâll make you feel better about this?â He asked, nodding to himself. âWe can drive anywhere. Just has to be a doctor that can take a pee test and confirm it.â
prettylittle-persephone:
Seph nodded slowly, giving his hand a gentle squeeze in return. âIâm sorry.â She said softly, her lips turning downward as she sighed. âI should have made sure we were more careful, that we were safe. This is absolutely the last thing you needed to worry about right now.â The girl let out a curt chuckle, turning her head away from him completely. After a moment of silence, she murmured, âHow are we going to do this?â
âWeâre going to do this together.â Atro said. âThis isnât your fault. This is happening for a reason.â He was always optimistic--it was as if that was the last thing he could remember. âLetâs get it confirmed and then weâll talk to your mom.â
prettylittle-persephone:
Seph exhaled sharply, almost as if sheâd had the wind knocked out of her, as soon as she laid eyes on the positive pregnancy tests. All the strawberry blonde could do was stare at the two thin plastic sticks without a word, even as Atro pulled her into a tight embrace.Â
After a long moment of silence, Seph finally murmured, âA good thing.â It was meant to come out as a question â one with a what the hell do you mean this is a good thing? edge to her tone â but her voice was flat. There was so much about all of this that was not good. Like the fact that Atro didnât even really know who she was, that he was pursuing their relationship on the basis of his suicide note; or the fact that Boyse wasnât even 3 years old and suddenly she was knocked up again. How would she tell her mother, who had already sacrificed so much to raise one of their children? Was she supposed to leave their second child with her too? What about The Clubhouse? There was no way she could possibly walk the halls of that place pregnant â not with her assorted exes and fellow mental cases roaming the halls.Â
These and a million other concerns flew through her mind, overwhelming her to the point of wriggling out of Atroâs arms. But instead of darting out of the room, she slowly sunk to the floor and laid down, her eyes fixating on a spot on the ceiling. It was something sheâd seen Boyse do whenever he felt overcome with emotion and, in that moment, it was all she could think to do. Seph patted the space beside her, inviting Atro to join her â even if it was only for a little while.
Atro quietly laid beside Seph, not sure what to say. He knew she wasnât thrilled at this result and he knew their situation wasnât ideal, but he also knew that Boyse was such a beautiful little boy and if that test meant theyâd have another just like him--then yeah... That was a good thing.Â
Without hesitation, Atro put his hand in hers, intertwining their fingers and squeezing her hand for reassurance. He was here for her. He wasnât there last time and he couldnât change that, but Atro was here for her now.Â
âWeâll have a doctor confirm it and then start figuring everything out.â Atro said quietly, almost whispering.Â
prettylittle-persephone:
âYou know, I think you got it right. I can feel my heart ââ Before Seph could finish her sentence, the timer buzzed, rattling against the bathroom counter. Breathless, she looked at Atro with wide eyes. âStopping.â Sucking in a deep breath, Seph reached up and stopped the timer but didnât stand up to look at the results. Instead, she took Atroâs hand and gave it a squeeze. âWeâll stand and look together on three, okay? One⌠Two⌠Three.â
"Three.â Atro said as he took a deep breath and stood. He helped Seph to her feet before he glanced down at the test. Although the blonde hadnât been there for this ordeal with Boyse, he still knew what two lines meant and he knew what a positive sign meant: they were having a baby. With a confirmation from two tests, Atro turned to look at Seph and had a gut feeling she wouldnât be as elated as he was. Wrapping his arms around the girl, Atro kissed her forehead, âThis is a good thing. This is a good thing.â He repeated, trying to assure her that everything would be alright.
prettylittle-persephone:
Sephâs gaze followed Atroâs, first landing on the two tests then the timer, which seemed to be moving at a glacial pace. âRabies.â She quipped back, an expressive brow arching as she smirked. âThough Iâd probably be foaming at the mouth already if that were the caseâŚâ She sighed, pursing her lips as she tapped her feet against the tile. âBut who knows? Thereâs still hope.â
âDying.â Atro said, running out of actual diseases to mention. âYou could literally be dying. From everything. All at once.â Atro gave her a small smile before glancing up at the timer. âThereâs still hope.â He agreed and squeezed her ankle.Â
prettylittle-persephone:
âWhy donât you go ahead and put this plate in the sink, bud? Daddy and I will be down in a little to help you wash it.â Seph smiled, shooing Boyse off and back downstairs before calling Atro up to their room. To say she was anxious would be a vast understatement, and that didnât change even as she disappeared into the bathroom with two of the three tests in tow.Â
Once the deed was done and the tests were lined up on the counter, Seph opened the door for Atro to join her. The girl sat on the cold tile floor, her knees pulled up to her chest, as she listened to the rapid ticking of the kitchen timer theyâd employed to keep track of the time. After a brief moment of silence, Seph looked at Atro and sighed. âThey could still be negative, you know. Just because Iâm late and nauseous doesnât mean much. That could be caused by any number of things, likeâŚâ She paused, contemplating any other feasible causes. âEbola.â
Atro had taken a seat across from Seph on the bathroom floor as soon as the door creaked open. He closed it behind him, to ensure a crazy curious little boy didnât wander in to see mom and dad on the floor. âAppendicitis.â Atro said almost immediately after Seph, unsure if those symptoms even matched. He looked up at the tests, which were almost entirely out of view before checking the timer and then back at Seph.Â
prettylittle-persephone:
Seph winced, shifting awkwardly in her place as he turned to leave. âYeah, sure. Food. I can try to do that. No guarantees, though. When I was pregnant with Boyse, I could barely â you know what, no, never mind, just go.â As soon as she heard the front door close, Seph laid back on the bed with a huff, massaging her temples with her fingertips.Â
However, before she could launch into thinking about how this possibly could have happened or what they were going to do about it if it was, in fact, true, Boyse appeared in the doorway with her abandoned plate of cold dinosaur pancakes. âMama, you have to eat your dinos before they get cold.â His little voice was affirmative but sweet â and just enough to encourage Seph to sit up and heed Atroâs previous advice. Just as she finished her last dino pancake, she heard the front door close and Atroâs unmistakable footsteps scramble up the stairs.
Atro made it to the nearest store in record time; finding the right pregnancy test was a different story. He wanted to get a good one--one that would be accurate. In the end, Atro decided the longer the wait then the better the test, so he grabbed a test with a three minute wait. He debated buying a second test and ultimately bought a second and a third.
Atro raced back to the house and called out for Seph.Â
prettylittle-persephone:
Seph smiled faintly at Atroâs obvious concern, taking his hands in hers as soon as he reached out. âNo, no, Iâm okay. I think itâs out of my system for now. I just need you to do me a favorâŚâ She hesitated, biting her lower lip as she moved to sit on the edge of their bed. âIâm, uh, late.â Seph spoke slowly, nervously. âLike late late. And I think it would be best if â well, see, I kind of need you to ââ She paused once more, her nose scrunching up as she blurted out, âI think we should take a pregnancy test.â
Atro stood against the door and listened intensely. It didnât take him long to figure out where she was going, but the dumbfounded look on his face must have led her to believe he needed a full explanation. âOkay.â He said after nearly a minute of shock and awkward silence. âIâll be right back. I wonât be long. I, uh, I need your keys. On the table. I saw them when we made breakfast. Okay. Be right back.â Atro went to leave the bathroom before turning and kissing her cheek. âTry and eat something.â Atro turned and left the bathroom, grabbing the keys and pressing a quick kiss on Boyseâs head. âIâll be right back kiddo. I gotta run to the store. You make sure Mom eats.â
prettylittle-persephone:
Seph slumped back against the bathroom wall, her breathing still a little heavy from her latest round of illness. As tired as she was, the girl couldnât help but wonder what was making her feel so sick. It obviously couldnât be a stomach bug, since she wasnât running a fever. And it didnât feel like food poisoningâŚÂ
After a minute or two, Seph shot up from the floor and darted into her room, scrambling to grab her phone off of her bedside table. She quickly opened her calendar app and scrolled back a week, two weeks, a month⌠Her face paled.
âAtro, could you come here?â She called through the open door, a twinge of panic creeping into her voice. âI need your help.â
Atroâs smile faded as he realized the serious tone Seph used. Not wanting to worry Boyse, Atro kept a smile on his face and crept away to go and check on Seph. âHey, baby.â He spoke quietly, his hands instantly reaching for her. âWhat happened? Are you okay? Do you need to go to the doctors?â
