Love, is something every human being will feel. Whether it’s for a good or bad purpose.
Unrequited love, is a curse very few will ever truly understand.
She had sworn an oath to protect him. To put his needs above her own. To never get too involved than she needed too.
Yet slowly, he forced his way into her life. Refusing to not be her friend at least.
Michael was determined to find out things about her.
For example, she likes chocolate milk instead of orange juice.
After that, he always had a supply of chocolate milk on stand by.
She started working with him while on the ‘Bad.’ Tour. That’s how long she was supposed to stay for. But he liked her too much, that he drew up a contract for her permanently.
She signed, no questions asked.
The year was now 1993, Michael was older. So was she. The world had taken its toll on them both. Both of them, couldn’t sleep. Would look for the exit in each in every room. Constantly looking over their shoulder.
And for each other.
She would let herself wonder. What if she told him? Told him how she felt. How she thought of him late at night. How she desperately wanted to crawl into his arms after every nightmare she had.
But of course, she never would.
Michael started to seclude himself more. Not letting many into his inner circle. Yet, by some miracle, she made the cut.
The two were in his studio. Him writing down notes on how to make his songs better. She simply sat in a chair, in her casual clothing. She liked to hear his pen hit the paper.
What she didn’t like, was that his heart was currently occupied by another. But that? She would never admit out loud.
“So, how’d the date with Miss Presley go?” She asked, not being able to help herself.
He chuckled, shaking his head. “It went alright.”
She tilted her head at him, “Just alright? No magic or wonderful moments?” Her voice was full of teasing.
And just a hint of jealousy. But if no one really looked, they couldn’t see it.
“No.” He sighed a bit, a small smile on his face. “Quite honestly, I think she’s changed a bit.”
Oh? This intrigued her.
It wasn’t that she hated Lisa. Quite the opposite. From the times she had spoken to her, the two got along great. In fact, Lisa almost didn’t mind having her around.
It was unnerving.
“How so?” She asked, sitting up a bit straighter. Her curiosity was peaked.
He sat up himself, putting the pen down. Sighing, he looked over at her. “Well, I don’t know how to explain it. She’s great and all. Her kids are wonderful. And…I don’t know girl. This is gonna sound stupid,”
“Just try.” She urged, softly. Making sure he knew, he had her undivided attention.
He took a moment, before continuing, “I don’t like how close she is with her ex husband.”
It was a moment of silence, before she straight up laughed. More so in anger. She really couldn’t help it.
“What?” He chuckled, crossing his arms.
“Michael, you asked this woman out while she was married.”
He cringed a bit, not many people knew that part. “Yeah…But she wasn’t happy!”
“Okay, doesn’t matter.” She rubbed her face in frustration.
While she cared and loved him. She also wasn’t a yes person. Disagreeing with him many times. While it irritates him, it was one of the many things he appreciated about her.
“Let’s not talk about that-“
“No Michael, you can’t just ignore that.” She said. Trying to keep her composure. “You confessed your love to this woman, while she was married. Who she has children with! You can’t be upset that she has a healthy relationship with her ex husband. That doesn’t make sense.”
He didn’t say anything, guilt creeping in. Lisa and Michael had been going out for a few months. For reasons he couldn’t explain. It wasn’t that he didn’t like Lisa. He did very much.
But if he liked her so much, why did he imagine his bodyguard in Lisa’s place?
He told himself it was a simple infatuation. That he didn't really see her that way. That when she went out on a date, he wasn't really upset. He was just worried about her. They were friends.
Because friends worry about each other.
"You don't have to be rude about it." He breathed out, standing up and beginning to walk out of the room.
"Michael, no. I'm not trying to be!" She said a bit louder, walking out after him. "But you know I would never lie to you!"
This made him stop in his tracks. Turning around to look at her, his eyes wondered over her face. In her eyes. Trying to find anything that could show him she was lying.
But there was nothing.
"Sometimes I wish you would." He mumbled, wrapping his arms around himself. She felt her heart break.
"You know I can't do that." She chuckled softly, crossing her arms.
As much as he said he wanted her to lie. He was thankful she never did.
The two eventually walked to the kitchen. He made a glass of orange juice for himself. A glass of chocolate milk for her. They sat at the kitchen island, just enjoying each other's company.
They had done this for so long. It didn't seem weird for them. Most of his employees already lived on the ranch. So she was always called up to come over for late night talks. Her cabin wasn't far from the main house.
He had it set up that way.
It was silence for a while, until Michael broke it.
"I think I'm gonna ask Lisa to marry me."
She choked on her drink. Coughing harshly. “Excuse me?”
He looked over at her, somewhat offended. “I said, I’m gonna ask Lisa to marry me.”
“Michael, you can’t be serious.”
“Why not?”
“Boy you’ve only know her for four months! And you want to go off and get married?” She said, her attitude switching immediately. As though she was a mother scolding a child.
“I love her.”
“You barely know this woman.” She shook her head, taking another sip of her drink. Drinking it as though it was alcohol. How she wished it was.
“Come on, don’t be like that.” He whined, turning his body to fully look at her. Her opinion mattered deeply to him. Yet, he couldn’t understand why.
“Michael, let’s be reasonable here.” She said, trying to once again stay calm. Now also turning her body fully towards him. “Four months. Four!”
“But I want children!”
“You will have them-“
“I’m getting older! Not younger! I don’t want to wait anymore.” He groaned, desperately trying to make her see his side.
“Have you considered adoption?” She said, trying to help him find a solution. “I understand all of your concerns. But Michael, rushing into marriage isn’t the answer. And you know I’m right!”
He sighed in defeat. Because she was right. “Yeah. I know.”
Michael looked like a defeated man. She knew how desperately he wanted children. Hell, if he ever asked HER to marry him. She would. While she never told him, children was something she so desperately wanted.
How come he never looked her way?
But there was no time for that now. She knew better than to let her thoughts wander. Support him. Help him.
She sighed. Feeling bad. Reaching over, she placed a hand on his shoulder. Making him look at her.
“You deserve children. But you shouldn’t rush into something because you feel like you’re running out of time. Especially marriage. Marriage is something, that’s too important. I can’t tell you what to do. But I advise you, wait. Really wait. Make sure she is who you really want for the rest of your life.”
He took in her words. Knowing where her heart was coming from. He couldn’t be angry at her. Not really.
Leaning forward, he hugged her. Hard. His arms wrapped around her as if she was the only person who mattered.
That’s how she felt anyways. But of course, she pushed it down.
“Thank you.” He said, his voice soft. He knew that out of everyone in his circle. She would always tell the truth.
“Of course Michael.”
Later that night, he thought about what she said. Going over her words over and over again.
But the more he did it, the more he thought about her eyes. Her face. Her lips.
Especially her lips.
Pushing the thoughts away. He forced himself to think about anything else. Any rational reason that he was feeling this way. It was admiration. Yes that’s it. Nothing else at all.
Groaning, he rolled his face into the pillow. Begging for sleep to come.
And when it did, all he could see, was her.
