A scenario were waterboy is talking to punch up after a dispatch in the break room and calls him dad, but neither waterboy or punch up bring any attention to it and punch up answers to wb calling him dad
The z-team behind them confused as hell
They are father and son dynamic I fear..
Ok this is actually so CUTE. And I do think they have something in the realms of like, a familial relationship towards things. At the VERY least an INCREDIBLY fond mentor/mentee on the verge of familial kind of relationship. So I personally hc that like, Punch Up is..KINDA like the Z team dad, or at the very least some kind of uncle. Like everyone has their own intricacies but one thing thatâs certain is Punch up is the Z team dad.
And like, for starters Waterboy isnât getting adopted by Punch Up and Punch up isnât adopting Waterboy. And Punch Up will still joke about drugs, drinking, sex etc around and with him. And Waterboy already HAD a dad who he loved VERY much, and his dad ADORED him back. So..heâs not..exactly in the market for a ânew dadâ.
However..Waterboy canât help but see a bit of his dad in Punch Up. Despite them being quite different, some things are..VERY similar. At first he thinks âoh my dad would love Colm!â But then..he starts thinking âOh. Colm is just like my dad..â. And the whole thing is like, really bittersweet for him.
Cause like, the way Punch Up encourages him, gets excited when Waterboy does something cool, defends him when people are being absolute jerks and tells him âchin up lad. Youâll get thereâ when Waterboy is wondering if heâs doing ENOUGH..
In those moments he feels that familiar feeling that his dad would make him feel. And it feels good.
I can imagine the first time Waterboy calls him âdadâ and itâs completely by accident.
Waterboy and Punch Up did a VERY difficult job together and came out the other side alive and well and the problem was solved. Punch Up gives him a rather firm pat on the back that almost knocks him off his feet and he praises Waterboy. And Waterboy grins and says
And then he freezes. CauseâŠnot only did he just call Punch Up dad..but..Robert definitely heard it as well. Holy shit..he needs to jump off a tall building IMMEDIATELY. Punch Up blinks and he looks..surprised. And then before Robert can say anything cause itâs VERY awkward right now Punch Up asks Robert to give them a few moments. And Robert agrees and he says they have five to ten minutes to sort..whatever that was out.
And once Robert leaves the line, Waterboy PANICS. He apologizes profusely and insists he didnât mean it and heâs scared but..Punch Up just tells him to breathe and calm down. He isnât mad just..really surprised.
Once Waterboy calms down Punch Up asks if..Waterboy sees him as a dad or something. He knows Waterboyâs parents are dead but one, he doesnât know HOW and two he doesnât..know the details of his dadâs personality or their relationship. Waterboy sighs and says itâs..complicated. Like he doesnât see Punch Up AS HIS DAD but..Punch Up actsâŠfatherly. He..reminds him of his dad a LOT.
Waterboy talks about the similarities. How encouraging his dad was. How he believed in him. How he insisted Waterboy would be an AMAZING hero one day. How he loved his mother and didnât like when people were mean to her and how he treats CoupĂ© (if theyâre still broken up or if theyâre back together at this point idk) reminds him of how his dad valued his mother greatly. How..his dad was just a really friendly guy, always wanting to help.
And he comments on a few other things like how he got his love of heroes and comics and other ânerdyâ things from his dad or how his dad quit eating fish all together cause it made Waterboy upset. That kind of stuff.
JustâŠPunch Up gives himâŠdad vibes.
Punch Up nods and he smiles a little and he says thatâs probably one of the nicest things anyone has said to him and he appreciates that Waterboy thinks so much of him. And if itâs any consolation, he really hopes that if he has a kid, that theyâd be as enduring and kind as Waterboy is. Cause..knowing him, he realizes there should be more people in the world like him. And the he grins and says âShall we head back son?â And Waterboy goes BRIGHT RED and he covers his face and he asks if Punch Up is ever gonna let this go. Punch Up says he wonât.
So..it becomes a little running joke between them. Just for them.
Punch Up will go âTHATS MY BOY!!â when Waterboy pulls off a low percentage job and be so excited. Everyone just thinks Punch Up is just really proud.
For Fatherâs Day, Waterboy goes up to punch up and gives him one of those gift sets of like, barbecue sauces since he knows Punch Up loves to grill and Punch Up is like âOH FUCK YEAHâ and Waterboy says it was either this or getting him a tie as a joke.
Punch Up learns the âare ya winning son?â Meme and heâll ask it when theyâre both on a job or if theyâre on different jobs and Waterboy is kicking ass. The others just think heâs quoting a meme now.
And nowâŠto the present.
Theyâre in the break room just having some snacks or lunch as the rest of the team is.
And Punch Up goes âYou did a good job cleaning up that goo blocking off down town Son.â
And the others are like âson? Huh. Weird but ok.â
And after Waterboy swallows his food he goes âT-Thanks dad.â
And everyone else (except Robert at this point he knows itâs an affectionate inside joke and CoupĂ© cause Punch Up told her.) is like âHUH???â
And Waterboy and Punch Up donât even fucking address it. They keep eating. And when people start asking questions they just give them a look and then go back to eating.
