What does design feel like?

If there’s anything I have learned growing up surrounded by the pursuit of art, it’s that there has to be passion that drives your practice. For as long as I can remember, I was coloring until you couldn’t see the white of the paper. I was transitioning sleepovers into photoshoots. I was flipping my dad’s band rehearsals into my own performances. I was begging my mom to buy me every issue of vogue. I was making anything and everything into fashion designs. I was spending days editing diy music videos. 

I never stopped scratching that itch for creating. 

It is my early ambitious that have helped form my design practice into what it is today. I believe innovation and exploration is what fuels my ambition. By using a new lens you are able to see in ways you had not before. I try to dive into those unexplored angles when it comes to design, to push what is recognizable. Through my formal education of design I have become hyper aware of the way I see, and how that differs for other people. I am not afraid to lean into that, to take an approach that's different than others.

Galaxy Book

This piece was made for my Idependent publishing class, the assignment was to make an accordian style book with content relating to “form”.

The images are edited shots of different specimens taken through the microscope, they then begin to resemble galaxies.

Encouragement

It’s a Saturday morning in the year 2007 and my mother drags in 2 8’ x 6‘  boards of plywood for my 4’ bodied self to paint a self-portrait on, alongside my sister. We go into our studio and grabbed  paint bottles in every color variation.

When I think about my artistic upbringing I think of two materials; those cheap 2 fl oz paint bottles, and oil pastel matched with my mom telling me “don’t stop coloring. It’s a practice that has continuously helped develop my own artistic process. I rarely go into a project with the intention of replicating an idea in my head. I start with one component and as if I am making a collage I add, take away, steal ideas, change then, render, process, print, and scan until the image I have created is to my satisfaction. Having such a fluid work process has its challenges, but ones that only help push myself. I am trying to be innovative I am trying to do what has not been done before.

 I remember going to the Barnes Foundation Museum in Philadelphia when I was about 10 years old. I never thought I liked art, let alone art museums. I alway felt it blended together, no excitement amongst Renaissance and Baroque if you ask me. What i didn't realize at the time was how much I was conditioning my taste in the process of my criticism. My grandmother asked me on that trip what art I liked, "abstract" I answered. My mother continued to encourage my skills, but if I am being honest... I did not have a choice. She would encourage my sister and I to enter poster contests in elementary school. The medium of choice was always oil pastel, and my mom was onto something with it. Crayola had nothing on oil, and my classmates couldn’t possibly have known, poor things.

This piece was created during a workshop for my friends event called “A Place To Be”. The gathering is centered around the act of being in communion with other creators. It’s mission is to “support black liberation, abolition of the carceal state, new love vocabularies, QTIPOC+ safe spaces, Migrant safe place, radical thought, book access, people power, and freedom freedom freedom”  Each month a new topic is presented. We are given a small amount of time during the gathering to makes something, and are encouraged to share.

This months topic was centered around Eros, the Greek god of love and sex, or the asteroid Eros which is known to be one the closest near-earth objects. I decided to focus on form is this excercise.

What is Art Direction...

It can take many different forms. Art Direction can be branding, it can be logo design, it can be mood boards, it can be music, it can be advertising, it can be photography. Mostly it is about establishing a unified vision for a given project.

Renell Medrano

I would always seen Renell on my instagram and  stop to look a bit longer. It was not until recently following her recognition from her solo show Peluca, featuring images form her cover story in Office Magazine, that I really made a point to acknowledge her in the recognition she deserves. Other being a fantastic photographer she also has a keen eye for directing, she has vision that makes the mundane, theatrical .
