Help Wanted

Hey, fellow theatre lovers, I was looking through my inbox, and I found a lot of requests for shows that I’m not incredibly familiar with their characters and/or musical styles and could use some suggestions for:

* Actually, I am very familiar, rather obsessed, with Godspell, I’ve just been having a lot of trouble with putting together a list. ** So far, I think that “People Will Say We’re in Love” (from Carousel, I think?) is a good parallel to “I’m Not At All in Love,” but that’s the only song I know from the show, to be honest.

So, if you have any ideas for these, then please post them into the inbox and I will be very appreciative of all of it.

Hi! I'm auditioning for Madame/Wicked Stepmother in Roger and Hammerstein 's Cinderella and i was wondering if you head any good songs. I saw an earlier post that had the other characters but not her and I just can't pick a song! Thanks!

Awesome, that was one of the most memorable of shows that I’ve been in with my group and it was so fun. :-D  Okay, so I think our Peter (a girl) auditioned with the “teen Fiona” part of “I Know it’s Today” from Shrek.  For Wendy, I have a few Disney songs that come to mind, like “Once Upon a Dream” from Sleeping Beauty, Ariel’s part of “If Only” from the Broadway version of The Little Mermaid, “Good Company” from Oliver and Company, or maybe “In a World of My Own” from Alice in Wonderland.  For Tiger Lily, “Colors of the Wind” from Pocahontas seems like a good, if a bit obvious, choice, and also “Lesson Number One” from Mulan 2 has a similar “girl power” feel to her “What Makes a Brave Girl Brave?”

I seriously need help with audition songs for 25thAPCSB, I audition the 25th. I'm a girl, and I don't really have any specific role in mind. I usually sing in the mezzo range, but my range has gotten a lot bigger, and my belt has improved. If you could help me out, that would be awesome! Thanks!

Alright, I made a list a while back of different songs for all of the female characters in this show (one of my favorites!).  Since you don’t have anyone specific in mind, I would suggest you try out all the songs and figure out which one is the best fit for your voice.  “My New Philosophy” (You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown) is a good general audition song for any of the girl spellers, but it does tend to be a bit overused in auditions, especially for this show.  When it comes to different characters, I would suggest “A Home for You” from Bat Boy for Rona, “Show Off” from The Drowsy Chaperone for Marcy (this one is a really good one to “act out,” especially if you’re a strong dancer or know other cool “tricks” to throw in while performing, much like with Marcy’s song “I Speak Six Languages”), “It’s Agent Shtarling” from Silence! The Musical for Logainne, and, last but certainly not least, either Ariel’s part of “If Only” from The Little Mermaid, “Superboy and the Invisible Girl” from Next to Normal, or “What it Means to be a Friend” from 13 for Olive.  Break a leg at your audition!

Audition songs for Heathers (all three) and Veronica from Heathers the Musical?

I just finished listening through the soundtrack, so putting together a list of audition songs is still very much a work in progress, but I’ve got a few ideas.  For Veronica, the song “Seventeen” has always sounded like it would be a good song for Shelley in Bat Boy, one of Laurence O’Keefe’s other musicals, so, working backwards from there, I would suggest the song “Mine, All Mine” from the London cast of Bat Boy.  Now, for the Heathers, I would second my earlier suggestion of “Opportunity” from 13 for Heather Chandler - although the motive is different (jealous of best friend going out with her crush), it’s still a rock-style, “mean girl”-type character song in the vein of “Candy Store.”  That one could also work for the other two Heathers, but I’m still looking for a better match for them.  (Readers, feel free to offer suggestions to help build this list or others.  It is always greatly appreciated.)

The Age of Not Believing and Portobello Road come from the film the Disney film Bedknobs and Broomsticks starring Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson.

Hi I was reading your song recommendations for spelling bee and I saw the you had the song it's agent shtarling on there... I really want to use this song for an audition but I cant find the sheet music anywhere. Do you know who sells it??

Sorry, I’m afraid not.  Usually, for my own auditions, I would use a MIDI or instrumental/karaoke file, but I can’t even find that.  Perhaps you can try contacting the playwrights through their website.  Best of luck in finding it, and break a leg at your audition.  Spelling Bee is one of my favorites.

Male Characters for Dogfight please!! and FAST! Thank you so much!!

Okay, I actually am fairly familiar with the soundtrack, but I don’t think I know the show well enough to make a list for it just yet.  Still, I want to try to help you out with some ideas (especially to make up for how flaky I usually am when it comes to reading/answering stuff in my inbox), so bear with me because I’m making this up as I go.  So, the show is set in the early 60s, so a lot of that music has the 50s/60s rock sound to it.  “Born to Hand Jive” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Party Queen” from Grease have a similar-ish style to “Some Kind of Time,” but they don’t have that troublemaker/raising hell type of character, so there’s also the Elvis song “Roustabout” that was featured in All Shook Up.  Now, if you’re interested in being the soloist for “That Face,” I would suggest something with more of a crooner sound.  The first thing that comes to mind is “Stay with Me” from City of Angels or perhaps “Can’t Take My Eyes off of You,” originally by Andy Williams, which was featured in the show Jersey Boys.  (If you’re interested in doing a little research, I’d also suggest looking up standards by Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Tony Bennett, etc. in case you might be able to find something better.)  Also, I’m not sure how good a fit it would be for any specific character, but “Moving too Fast” from The Last 5 Years came to mind.  I hope I helped.  Break a leg at your audition!

Make a post for heathers

I’m not that familiar with Heathers: The Musical, but I’ve started listening to the soundtrack, and just a few things that have come to mind before I’ve thought about it in depth: “Opportunity” from 13 is a good rock-style “mean girl” type character song, and “Dead Girl Walking (Reprise)” kind of reminds me of “Raise a Little Hell” from Bonnie and Clyde, though it’s the wrong gender (Still, maybe it could work for one of the guys.)
