something I really love about the characterization of Mr. C and Richard!Coop is how the show uses their coldness to emphasize Cooper's outgoing warmth and weirdness. his distinct brand of autistic joy, the way he loves the world with his big dumb heart on his sleeve.

it took effort for him to maintain that love and joy, he had to choose to not succumb to BOB's lifelong terror campaign against him and the entire culture of american masculinity backing him up. he had to chose and fight to be the man he is. he’s flawed but deeply kind and empathetic. he embraces the world with curiosity and delight.

he isn’t naive about how he’s seen either, he knows he’s offputting and weird to others at times. he chooses to preserve his soul and be kind at the expense of conformity. likewise we see how desperately insecure Mr. C is, how preoccupied he is with how others must see him as a big scary badass.

…and like the meta angle here of course is that so much of Cooper's lovable personality is from Lynch and MacLachlan mashing their personalities and quirks together. they are intrinsic to the DNA of Cooper as a sweet lovable weirdo.
