Unless a mutant dies for some random puppy or small child, that bill is passing. Think about it. All of the leg work on the part of the government was done in secret. They’re not trying to clue people in. It’s going to pass, and when it does, we’re all toast.”

Augustus was silent for a moment. It surely felt Caleb was right, with recent news, it was hard to believe that things were going to be okay for mutants. “...Perhaps your view is the pessimistic view. Caleb. I know what you may be thinkin’. Noy may seem like the perfect time but don’t. We’re gonna need each other, the team, all of us. Whether this thing comes to fruition or not, there’s a storm comin’, and I wouldn’t want to be in the rain if I were you.”

“Ugh,” Isi groaned appreciatively, “Sounds fantastic. That vegetarian lasagna they made last time was so good.” So good, in fact, that she’d had two baking dishes of the stuff. “Shall we head over?” She asked, gesturing to the mansion.

“It was great! And no, not really… I hate to think it, but I’m not sure it’s possible for me to go any faster. I try to push myself but I just don’t have anymore to give.” She bit her lip and shrugged, before refocusing on Atticus. “What have you been up to this afternoon?”

“Yes, they’re quite good cooks for being so young. Yes, let’s head over.” His hands slipped into his pockets and he made his way back to the mansion with Isi in tow.

“I’m sure you’ll breakthrough. You just haven’t had a reason, perhaps. But.. even if you don’ get any faster, you’re max speed now is extremely impressive...at least I think so..”

“Really?” She asked, biting her lip a little. “Oh, right.” Her face fell a little when she realized he was talking about her ability, only. “I mean, I don’t know… I guess I could work on making other things disappear, but I have to be touching things to make them disappear, so… It’s kinda hard to do a magic show like that.” She explained. “Besides, I don’t… I mean, I’m not really pretty enough.”

“Mm, Well you could just do fake magic. Then, make yourself disappear as the grand finale.” He shrugged. Augustus looked at Delaney, confused by her response. “What do you mean? You’re very pretty.” That certainly was blunt enough for him, and his eyes widened after his words. “I-i...think so, at least..”

“I know, right? Me, too.” Delaney grinned, loving the look on Augustus’s face as he thought about the mysterious founder of their school. It was the brightest expression she’d ever seen on August’s face. She smiled, nodding along when August thanked her for the compliments, her smile widening when he said his mom would like her. “A beauty pageant? I’m not sure I’m qualified to be in one of those…” She said, flushing a little. “I mean. I don’t have any talents, for one…”

“You’re very qualified, at least I think so.” Augustus replied succinctly. He was good at honest, though not so much in tune with what he said. “I suppose you could do a good magic show with your ability. I don’t think I’ve seen a contestant do a magic show for the talent portion, an’ I had to go often, because I had cousins in the running. You could beat a lot of those girls... not that pageants are fun thing to do at all.”

Nat breathed in deeply – and rather loudly – as she gave a committed nod. Despite her ability to think relatively quickly, her explanation of things didn’t seem to express the mess of her thoughts very well. “Alright, so,” She began with a purse of her lips, “It’s basically the online, mobile version of the game. You sorta play with other players like you usually do, but the app chooses your opponents by random and you can’t exactly play with friends, and all that junk.” She finished with a rather satisfied grin, happy that she was able to make more sense this time around.

“I’ve never heard of this, but i’m sure it exists. You... did something with it?” He had no problems with Nat’s long-winded explanations.It saved him from having to contribute in most conversations with her. He was also just always intrigued by the things she managed to do. He made his sandwich by hand instead of by ability. “Would you like one? It would save you from filling up on solely chips and chocolate.”

Augustus nodded and chose to say nothing more. He was going to be very cautious around her from now on. “I may. I-I think I’d have to talk to him myself before I bring it up to our headmistress. I’ll think about it..”

“I’m sure he’s still alive. You’ll see.” Delaney said, an air of surety in her voice. She refused to even entertain the belief that that Charles Xavier was dead. He was alive. He had to be. “You’re a real southern gentleman, huh, Gus?” She smiled. “My mom would like you. She likes proper gentlemen with good manners.”

“I... hope you are right. Seeing professor Xavier in the flesh would be wonderful. I have so many questions for him.” His eyes were slightly brightened as his mind worked at the thought of sitting down with the founder of the Institute. “Thank you, Delaney. I try. My mother would certainly be grateful to hear your opinion of me. She’d like you, too. Probably want to enlist you in a beauty pageant, though. She’d always wanted a daughter for that purpose.”

Serenity let out a dramatic sigh of relief. “Good. That would be terrible for my reputation if anyone did.” She giggled softly before giving him a proud smile. “Thank you, August. I’m very glad you think so. You’re kind too.” He might be rather proper, but to her he was kind.

“Thank you, I try to be.” He smiled. “I-I have to continue my training on vector fields. If I don’t log at least five hours, Mr. Rey won’t let me continue my study and incorporate this technique into combat. I’ll.. see you later though?”

“Oh.” Delaney frowned. “Well, he’s Charles Xavier. He’s Professor X. I’m sure he’s not dead. He’s out there somewhere, in hiding, and when we need him most, he’ll come back. He can’t be dead.” She said firmly. “Thanks, Gus. You’re a good friend.” She told him with a smile. “Most people woulda just told me to shut up when I start blabbering like that.”

August nodded. “That’s a very good point.” Though, he himself was doubtful, he tried not to express that. He knew he was a mutant, but he was a fairly scientific man and he didn’t really believe in miracles. Professor Xavier was powerful, influential, history changing person, but for him to still be alive now, the telekinetic felt it’d be a miracle. He smiled lightly, as ‘good friend’ was a bit of a new compliment for him. “Well, that’d be rude. An’ I prefer listening to talking anyhow.”

Not the actual card game, but like, the application. It’s not like there’s a difference, but…you get the deal.” She stopped herself with a curt laugh before she could blabber any further.

Augustus set about getting the ingredients to make himself a sandwich, moving the things he needed from the fridge to a counter without touching them; since he’d probably drop the things otherwise. Augustus grinned, amused by her antics, though his brow furrowed inquisitively. “I’m not sure I follow you. Uno, as in the card game- but not the card game?”

“It’s alright!” Isi reassured Augustus, smiling. “And, you can call me Isi!” Despite having been together at Xavier’s for years, she still wasn’t used to Augustus calling her by her full name. No one else in her life did, not even her father, but the telekenetic wouldn’t stop no matter how many times she’d invited him to. Old-school gentlemanly habits, she supposed.

At the mention of dinner, Isi started salivating. She needed excessive amounts of food and water to maintain her powers at this standard- her body burned up calories like it was nothing. “Oh thank God, I’m starving. I swear I could eat the entire contents of the pantry right now.” She sidestepped, bent down to pick up her drink bottle, and then took her place beside Augustus. “What’s for dinner? Who’s cooking tonight?”

He was grinning, set at ease by Isi’s enthusiasm, then the reminded made him widen his eyes a moment. “Oh, right! My apologies. I always seem to forget.” And he likely would again. His mind just was hard wired to formality. Back home, the punishment for veering from that was fairly severe.

“One of the twins has decided to make dinner for all of us. They were ensured to make something fit all members nutritional needs. Vegetarian, vegan, speedster. All covered.” He informed with a grin. His hands slid in his pockets, a usual position for him. Being casual was a bit of a learning process as well. “How was your run? Any progress?”

“I supposed Mr. Xavier himself would be one to write a book, huh? He’s incredible. I wish I could meet him. I mean, he’s still alive, right?” Delaney asked, frowning a little. “It must be. I mean. Learning about mutants is important for me. Until a few months ago I thought I was the only person like me, you know? I didn’t know what a mutant was, or what to look up to find out more about myself or people like me. They don’t teach about us in school, and certainly not in homeschool with my parents buying me all the textbooks and the online classes.” She was doing it again. Blabbering away without stopping. It was a bad habit of hers. “Sorry. I kind of just start talking and then I find it really hard to stop, you know? I mean, I guess it’s just a side effect of having no one to talk to besides my parents for the last eight years.” She explained.

Augustus bit at his bottom lip a moment. There were still some students unaware of the current situation. “I... don’t know. I don’t think anyone knows what has happened to him but it’s been a very long time since he was last seen.” He kept his gaze down, unsure how Delaney would feel about such news. He kept alert during her words. “It’s alright. This was your attempt at connection to your fellow X-men, so it’s only fair you share as well.”

“Quiet Me”

It wasn’t the best day for the team.

The battle was obviously one of an upcoming many in the war against the rebel mutant synditcate, and it wasn’t a decisive loss, but it was a loss that stung.

Negasus, a mutant with an ability to negate other mutant powers with contact, had configued a way to fight long range. shooting traces of his DNA in high speed bullets, catching him and his cohorts was.... immensely difficult. And it didn’t come without complication.

They were waiting together to find out the news, since they were the only two hit. Augustus was on edge. The thought of losing his abilities forever was more than sobering.

Tristan, though. He seemed to be taking it even harder. There was no superhuman empathy needed to feel the waves of anger wafting from him. The med room they were kept in was quiet, but the silence weighed more than Gus could carry. “Tristan...Tristan,I-”

“It’s my fault. I wasn’t focused, I cost us our powers, I almost cost our lives.”

He looked to Augustus, and the telekinetic (or perhaps former) could see how this was weighing on him. “It’s not your fault... You were evacuating. There’s no way you could’ve saved those civilians and avoided that attack... I shouldn’t have-”

“Shouldn’t have saved me?!” Silence. “That wasn’t what I was going to say...” “No... You’re right. If you hadn’t of wasted your time, you could’ve used the opening to defeat Negasus, and you wouldn’t be in this mess....now we’re both useless. I brought us both down and now there’s no way we can-” “Tristan.” “Without your tactics and abilities, we can’t-” “Tristan!” “Fuck!” The boy’s voice bounced against a wall and they were both silenced. His outrage was accompanied by a harsh fist against his nearest wall. “I fucked up, Gus... I let the team down, I let everyone down... I wasn’t strong enough...”

Augustus rose from his seat, then. He was unafraid now to be close, and put a hand on his teammates shoulders. “Listen to me, Tristan. You, dedicating your life and energy to defending people who can’t defend themselves makes you stronger than any superhuman strength could. You are strong. You uphold Xavier’s vision more than most mutants I’ve seen walk through his doors. Hell, more than me. The X-men are so great because of you, and-...” The boy’s blue eyes wavered a bit as they watered, Augustus’ voice broke as he spoke. “We couldn’t lose you... I-I couldn’t... I should have stopped the bullet, not push you from it. and I should have gotten the better of the target sooner. All I know is I couldn’t live with myself if I let you die. I would give up all the powers in the world to protect you, and I know you would do the same.”

The silence was weighted, but of a different sort of energy. It wasn’t long before Whitefeld entered through the door, all formality. “Boys, I have some news...”
