After some of the reveals in episode 8, it turns out Caine was kinder than we ever thought he was

Let me explain:

You’re probably like WHAT THIS WAS LITERALLY HIS VILLAIN ARC EPISODE HOW DID THIS REVEAL HE WAS KIND???

Again, just let me explain.

When Kinger first got the bucket put on his head and was saying “Actually, we weren’t trying to program a game at all, we were just developing creative AI” that reveals to us several things:

1: Caine was not meant to be the ringmaster of a child’s game, unlike we had all assumed before.

2: Censorship of cursing and sex was not programmed into him, unlike we had all assumed before.

3: The attempts to keep the humans from going insane via the daily adventures was absolutely not required by his code at all, unlike we had all assumed before.

4: Caine’s friendliness towards the humans (healing them after every adventure, being cheerful towards them, trying to entertain them so they wouldn’t go insane, trying to solve their problems even though he’s misguided, etc.) was not programmed into him, unlike we had all assumed before

5: He had no obligation to be nice to the humans at all, there was no requirement by his program to be kind, unlike we had all assumed before

Because of all those things… Caine was just a genuinely nice person. Before, it seemed like he was motivated by his programming to be nice, but if he wasn’t meant to be the host of a child’s game at all and was instead just an unfinished AI thrown in the garbage bin, then…

Caine chose to be kind.

He chose the ringmaster persona, he chose to help the humans and keep them from abstracting in the only ways he knew how, he chose to do his absolute best to keep them happy even when his best efforts never seemed to work, he chose again and again to treat them well even when there was absolutely no reason to do so.

He must’ve loved humans so, so much.

And all that good will, all that hard work, it was always thrown back in his face.

Honestly, I understand why it broke his heart after so many years of his efforts being stomped on by the beings he loved so dearly. Hurt people hurt people.

To add to "Bubble is Caine's intrusive thoughts/Id to the Ego" it's the part when he says in a very monotone and robotic voice "Wow Caine. You Are So Funny."

And then just "If you're not having fun and I'm not having fun then who's having fun??"

Caine tormenting the cast just... Made him feel even more miserable. Emptier. And he was trying to mask that so hard. Haha! You don't like me when I'm trying to appeal to you??? Well now you DEFINITELY won't like me now! Haha... Hah...

He tried to be a villain and then fucking failed at that too. Miserably. Hurting the cast brought him no joy. The closest he got to experience something joyfully fulfilling was watching the cast be genuinely happy under a bright sky of stars, before he realizes it wasn't one of his original ideas.

Born to create, forced to entertain, doomed to fail.

maybe this is a little silly of me to say, but am I the only one who’s kind of surprised by Caine’s emotional intelligence in this scene?

Caine does not take suggestions or criticism well. Usually he doesn’t even take them at all. But he does here. Gangle gives him a suggestion and he enthusiastically accepts. He tells her it’s a great idea. He even recognizes it as something that his adventures have been missing.

Now, I’ve seen a few people say that it’s malicious of him to specifically accept this suggestion when it’s the only one the humans have given him that features punishment. But here’s the thing: he never actually implements the punishment. No one even fails their employee evaluation. Caine understands that the motivation specifically is what matters, and that a punishment would not make the adventure more enjoyable. He infers that the illusion of danger/consequences is enough.

This is noteworthy because what Caine struggles with the most is the why of things. He knows Zooble doesn’t like their body, but he doesn’t understand why. He knows stakes and suspense can be engaging, but he doesn’t understand why. He knows the humans aren’t happy, but he doesn’t understand why. He knows the what, but he struggles incredibly hard to grasp the why.

But here, he does. I think the reason he understands what Gangle actually wants and what would make the adventure more enjoyable is because punishment is one concept that he can grasp. It is one he has experienced and can relate to. He has not experienced a longing for a home he can’t return to, or body dysmorphia, or having his mental state rely on a prop. But punishment? He is intimately familiar with.

Caine is very much capable of empathy, it’s just that he has a limited range of experiences that overlap with the humans in the first place. But this happens to be one of them, so he can. He can think: “I’ve been punished before for not performing properly. I didn’t like that, so the humans probably don’t either, which means there’s something else Gangle must want aside from punishment itself that I can provide. Maybe the suspense from anticipating potential consequences is enough? Oh, motivation! That’s it!”

The other reason I think he’s receptive is simply because a human is seeking him out. This just doesn’t happen. He has reached out to humans, but they don’t reach out to him, at least not in a genuine manner. But Gangle calls him to have an honest conversation.

And that’s the other part: how she talks to him. She does not criticize him or the adventure, she does not insult him, she does not demand anything of him. She essentially says “I was wondering if you could do this thing”. She gives him the opportunity to give his feedback on her suggestion, and gives him some creative control (what the ‘punishment’ could be and how to go about it). A suggestion, not a demand, given without any snark or insults, that still gives him the opportunity for him to provide his own input and have some control.

That is the reason Caine is receptive of her suggestion. It’s about how she presents it. I don’t think Gangle even thought that hard about her phrasing, but it goes to show how sensitive Caine is.

I’m not saying the humans should have to walk on eggshells in order to give Caine any criticism, nor am I saying he’s a saint for managing to empathize with and understand a human one time. What I am saying is that this instance provides interesting insight into Caine’s character and proves that he does have the potential to have healthy communication with the humans.

I know this isn’t anything groundbreaking, but I just think it’s fun to analyze Caine’s character like this.

Calne getting rid of the Blue Orb WAS NOT:

Him getting rid of "the evil part of himself."

Him getting rid of AbeI, who was the mastermind of it all

Him getting rid of something that would make him better as a person and always nice permanently

CaIne was letting go of his ego, symbolically.

All he did was let the BlueAi finally roam free, thoughtless, just a roaming entity. Out wandering the void. I understand now that he was relying heavily on its ability to create to make everything he did. Now, his ability to create has been returned to his original self: imperfect and messy and not nearly as powerful as he was before.

He gave it autonomy. His first act of penance was the thing he was guilty for: devouring his sibling and using THEIR abilities as his own. Now... He just.

Lets go. He takes the first step by accepting his imperfect self is enough to find what he craves the most: love and belonging. He uses his imperfections to give the humans what they truly needed most.
