Gaslighting Oneself

In the fifth grade, I decided James and Lily Potter didn’t die. I just... gaslit myself into the fact. I didn’t read fics about the fact, I didn’t tolerate any media on it, any thought of it. I stopped rereading the books because it was too painful. And after about seven years, I can say it’s pretty successful. Generally am numb to the fact. Didn’t happen. Na dah. Applies to other characters. Frank and Alice? Alive. McKinnons? Thriving. Sirius Black? Fantastic. Remus Lupin? Actually Defence Professor for the past ten years, thanks for asking! The Potters are extremly fertile and have lots of children. The Longbottoms follow suit and manage girlbossing dark wizards as aurors. Am I a hypocrite because I’m a stickler for sticking to Canon? Absolutely. But like.... it saves me the pain, the tears and the beers. So I’m good.

Quintessential Jily Fic Things that I adore

Having read (and mostly exclusively) Jily for the past 5 years, these are some ESSENTIAL Jily fic things that have the following reactions:

Giggling

1. The Reaction. What do you mean James Potter is head boy? Is Dumbledore up his tree? 

2. A good nickname! Good nicknames for Lily always make me giggle. 

3. Good Marauder banter. A good Jily fic needs good Marauders, it must be said. 

Kicking my Feet

1. The Dormitory situation. A good Jily fic will have a shower mishap. An even better Jily fic will have a description of James’s abs. Ensue: the excessive kicking and giggling. 

2. Fangirl James monologue. He is fawning over Lily- he is giggling- he is kicking his feet- twirling his hair- but with a straight face. Lily doesn’t know- but we do! And bonus points for when she looks at him and makes a witty comment about how he looks constipated, or something. 

3. Confessional Situations. I’m thinking truth or dare afterparty situation, kiss marry kill situation. Lily reluctantly confessing she thinks James is attractive. 

4. In the spirit of the holidays, anything with mistletoe. <3 

Screaming

1. A really good Jily fic will have a well-written ‘August’ love interest who is the foil to Lily. However, she will be written in a way that is competent- we like her- but she has flaws- but we admit (under our breath) she is competition. It has to draw out the pain, you know? 

2. Personally, I LOVE fics with Snape in it that do him well. Also draws out the tension. The conflict between his morals and his creepy love for her makes for a really interesting read. 

3. The Lily realisation that she likes James (this is always very meaningful). Teasing from her friends is always fun.
