Who: Edward Bones & Anyone When: Sunday, March 5th, 1978. 11:32am Where: His makeshift office
After months on the job at Hogwarts, it was time for Edward Bones to go home. It wasn’t that he necessarily wanted to leave, but deep down, he knew it was time. Ever since he’d arrived at the school, Edward had worn himself thin trying to protect the students of Hogwarts and solve tragic case after tragic case. Despite his efforts, the Aurors had learned next to nothing and the students were in just as much danger as they had been on Halloween. And what did Edward have to show for his time here? More grey in his hair, dark circles under his eyes, and a wounded leg that just wouldn’t heal. He had a stack of letters from parents accusing him of doing a poor job, and an inquiry at work over Charlotte’s betrayal. Worst of all, his time at Hogwarts had done nothing but strain his relationship with his children.
Edward Bones was leaving Hogwarts feeling rather defeated, but no one could say he hadn’t tried. Perhaps the greatest lesson he’d ever learned from his leadership role in the Auror Department was how to entrust others with important work. Sometimes, though he didn’t like to admit it, he just wasn’t the best man for the job and this time, he wasn’t. As Edward packed up his office, he sorted materials he thought might be of use into a box for his team, the rest into a box he would take with him back to the Ministry. He supposed he might like to spend some time in his real office for a change, take his wife to lunch, and not be under the constant pressure of protecting the students of Hogwarts. Not to mention how nice it would be to sleep in his own bed, cook his own meals, and actually have some real time off. But before he could leave, Edward intended to say his goodbyes.
“It hardly seems fair that you get to run home again so quickly after the rest of us arrive,” Phoebe said as she stepped into the office. “Leaving us with all the younglings, trying to keep the students in check. I suppose you’ve had enough of their cheek by now though.” She wasn’t sure how he’d lasted this long, frankly. Phoebe was already tired of dealing with the students, and wished she could go back home to her usual duties. And bring Bella along too. They didn’t get much time together at Hogwarts, and it was very inconvenient when they had just taken such an important step forward in their relationship.
“Do you have any advice for those of us remaining? I’m at my wit’s end already and I’m not sure what I’ll do for the rest of the time I’m here.” It was more than that which had brought her here, though. She was going to miss Edward’s presence; he had always been someone she greatly admired as an Auror, and had enjoyed the opportunity to work with him so closely again.
