Homecoming
There was still a hesitance that hung between them despite all the words that were being spoke that seemed to mean they were together again. Ludo realized perhaps he had been naive to imagine them running together and her jumping into his arms, but somehow the reality even if less exciting was more amazing because it wasnât a mere fantasy.
He smiled lightly as he looked at her, but still stayed silent.
âAre you serious? Do you really think things have changed so much that there is a moment I wouldnât want you with me?â he took a step forward but halted before he got too close to her. âOf course I want you hereâ-Am i allowed toââ his hands moving lightly to symbolize the distance between them. He wasnât sure if he was asking just to be close to her, or to hug her, or to finally feel the lips against his that he had missed for so long.
She found herself wanting both to run to and away from him. And in the strangest sense of vertigo, she found herself wondering why people run at all. Why is it that you can have this thing before you -- this beautiful, perfect thing -- and still have the animal instinct to turn and run as fast as you can? How could he possibly see the future that she saw and have chosen to leave anyway?Â
It was as clear as day to her. In seven or eight years, heâd have lead the national team to as many titles and sheâd be several rungs higher on the ladder in the Auror office. Theyâd have moved from the heart of the city but they visited often and traveled far and wide. She accompanied him on trips to tournaments and regularly cheered until she lost her voice. And of late when she allowed herself this small fantasy, it seemed that a tiny thing with a mess of ashy brown hair had begun to appear in her thoughts as well. She had her motherâs eyes and her fatherâs smile, and she won the heart of any and all that she met. They were happy.Â
Any now.. now she didnât know what she wanted. She wasnât sure if that dream was possible anymore. But she knew one thing: if you never try, youâll never know.
She stared at the space between them, her eyes not truly focused on a thing. Her mind seemed to race and suddenly she wondered if sheâd jumped the gun and come running to his door too soon.
âI have fought for you and I have fought with you, and I am tired, Ludo; I am tired of fighting. I need a safe place to land every once in awhile,â she said, still staring at his hands, eyes silently measuring the small distance between them. She was trying to convince herself of something they both already knew: that this was right. Â âBut Iâm here. And youâre here.â
Emmeline swallowed, looking up slowly. That smile she loved crept up to the corners of his mouth as she nodded slowly. She took a step, his outstretched hands fitting naturally around her waist as she did. Her own arms instinctively went around his neck. âI think weâre gonna be okay.â
