The southern gate of Suwon’s Hwaseong Fortress and the historic main entrance of the old walled city, Paldalmun Gate was built in 1794. Unlike the other gates of the fortress, this one is now detached from the city walls and surrounded by commercial buildings and traditional markets.

Like Seoul’s Heunginjimun Gate (Dongdaemun), it is protected by a semicircular outerwork.
