Today I learned about an incredible artist named John Conrad Berkey. He created cover art for many science fiction books, and also created artwork for NASA! But he’s most famous for his incredible Star Wars illustrations.

George Lucas actually bought several John Berkey science fiction illustrations and used them to help pitch Star Wars to studios. And many of Berkey’s pervious artwork was used as inspiration for Star Wars’s visuals.

Berkey was later commissioned by LucasFilm to create posters for Star Wars, shown below:

"Berkey's imagination and expressionistic style quickly set him apart from other sci-fi illustrators. From a distance, his paintings appear very exacting and perfectly rendered. But upon closer inspection, they reveal a beautifully loose and freely abstract style."

Politics is actually like…one of the top reasons to cut someone out of your life? Where the fuck did we get this idea it’s an invalid reason to abandon people? It’s literally your statement on how you think society should exist and what rights you think people should have and how. It ain’t fucking “My uncle Craig’s dead to me because he takes his sandwiches with the crust on” it’s “My uncle Craig has consistently stated a hatred of minorities and poor people for longer than I’ve been alive, of course I’m gonna call him a piece of shit”

i think there is nuance though. simple BEING a republican or BEING a democrat is not a valid reason to cut someone out of your life. rough political association does not speak to a persons specific political beliefs and it also doesn’t speak to their character as a person.

now, after someone reveals themselves to have ideas and beliefs about other people and society that run counter to yours, yeah cut them out, whatever. but there is a lot of judging books by their covers that goes on in general, from everyone, and i consider that a waste and a shame. figure out what someone REALLY thinks before you go cutting them out. then cut them out.

The problem is that the modern social media algorithm is has pushed your average conservative into a completely different understanding of reality than everyone else.

In 2014, you and your weird uncle could probably have a sensible disagreement about Taxes and Property Law.

Now, he’s just as likely to believe that Biden is suffering from adrenochrome withdrawal and that the Sandy Hook Shooting was faked.

Maybe, but until my weird uncle actually says those things, I'm just making an assumption based on said social media algorithm or whatever you are talking about, and I don't make judgements on people based on preconceived notions of who they are before they've told me who they are themselves. I've had enough flat out book-cover judgement cast on me, and it's not something I plan to pay forward.
