Frankensteining Story Ideas - Creating New Stories from Old Concepts
Hello everyone, Matt Ryan Here!
As most writers will tell you, one of the hardest parts of the writing process is coming up with ideas to write about. A lot of people go on about trying to come up with an “original” idea, and end of frustrated when they feel like they can’t come up with anything.
I had this problem for a long time myself, but over the years I came up with a system for generating ideas and concepts that works almost like magic!
I call it “Frankensteining,” and you’ll see why in a moment!
I’m sure most of us have the saying “nothing is original anymore” at some point in this day and age. For the most part, it’s true.
Everything has been done before to an extent. That’s why tropes and clichés are a thing. While you can always subvert tropes, coming up with entire story concepts can be a bit more challenging.
Until you start Frankensteining!
It’s really easy to start doing, and I’ll explain using how I came up with my upcoming Kindle Novel “Hunting Eagle.”
Martial Arts fantasy is nothing new, neither are ninjas and chi based powers.
Organized crime stories have been done for years.
The underdog story is about as old as fiction itself.
But what if we stitched all of these together?
Depending on how we do it we can come up with something really interesting from these things that may not seem to go together as first.
Such as a story of an up and coming fighter being recruited into a organized mercenary group dating back to the ancient ninjas!
This isn’t the only way to put these thing together either! It could be a story about a martial arts student joining the mafia. Or a Mafioso running from a mercenary group.
Ideas can be combined in all sorts of ways. It all comes down to experimentation!
Give it a try! Find some things to stitch together, and see what stories come to life!
Leave your creations in the comments below! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
