I see you've decided to deem our world worthy of your time, dear traveler. Welcome, and I hope you enjoy your stay.
I am currently walking with my brother towards our new schoolâthe first actual school we've been to since we were six. And quite frankly, I don't give a fuck, as most travelers would say. We haven't been able to attend a regular school because the higher-ups ordered our foster facility to homeschool us. They claimed we weren't comfortable
interacting with societyâwhich we weren't. But because they've finally decided we are well enough, we are being enrolled into an academy for beings like us. To be specific, we are entering Silverbloom Academy for the supernatural.
In our world, beings such as vampires, werewolves, mermaids, and sirens exist. There are humans, of course, but they're kept blissfully unaware of our existence.
My name is Riana Kishimoto Valentinâor at least, that's how I'm registered in Britain. In Japan, I'm registered as Riana Valentin, since they don't officially recognize middle names. The person walking beside me is my younger twin brotherâ
âBy a few minutes,â came a soft, playful voice.
âShut it, Lin! How are you even listening in on this?!â
âThe author gave me special, temporary powers to intercept this one sentence,â she boasted.
âOf course she didâŚâ I muttered.
âWhat are you two on aboutâŚ?â a confused male voice cut in.
âOh, nothing!â they said in unison.
Sorry about that. The giggling creature beside me is Lin. She's a fairy. I would say she's a Tinker Bell equivalent, but she's more of the âsquish a bug and ride a catâ type, rather than âride a bug and be careful of cats.â Other than us passing our evaluation, the facility sent her along to keep an eye on us. In the words of our evaluator: âJust in case you aren't faking your mental state to get out of this miserable place. If I were you, I would.â It wasn't that bad honestly...I think. They also said she's here to help with my speech therapy, since I seem comfortable talking to her.
Anyways, as I was saying, the boy next to me is my younger twin brother, Raymond Kishimoto Valentin. Or just Raymond Valentin.
Our father was Delvon Fredrick Valentin, a British businessman who married my Japanese mother, Yuhiko Kishimotoânow Yuhiko Valentin. They met on a business trip and fell in love. How stereotypical. You can probably figure out the rest on your own.
Unfortunately, they passed away in anâŚaccidentâŚwhen my brother and I were at the tender age of six. Since we had no relatives fit to take care of beings like us, we were sent to a special foster care facility for supernatural beingsâor âbeingsâ for short. âOh, but humans are technically beings too!â We call humans infern. Shush.
Now you're probably wondering what my brother and I are. Well, we're espers. We aren't fully-fledged ones, since our only powers are telekinesis and telepathy. A fully-fledged esper also possesses clairvoyance or precognition, depending on how strong they are.
What is an esper, exactly? Espers are people who can use more than 100% of their brains. How is that possible you ask? Well, an esper's genes are similar to humans but they're not exactly the same. The difference is we were born with genes that allowed us to continuously break the limits of our mental state. So the more limits an esper could break the more powerful they are. However, if their mental abilities outweigh their physical limits and they can't handle the powerâwell, that's a different story.
So, we're basically just humans with better brains. But as orphans in a world where inhumanly strong creatures exist, I couldn't let us stay defenseless. Intelligence alone wasn't enough of a weapon. Because of that, Ray and I have been training in all sorts of martial arts since we turned eight. Unsurprisingly, we excelled ten times faster than any normal human. Now, we're inhumanly strong and fast, too. Don't go thinking we were born with that strength and speed, though. We were born as humans with advanced brains and the DNA required to break natural limits, but it still took immense effort to grow. We just needed a bit less effort than normal humans do.Â
âHey, Ri,â Raymond said, interrupting my dialogue with you, dear traveler. He didn't say it out loud, of course. We're espers who can read each other's mindsâwho needs mouths?
   âYes, Ray?âÂ
âWhat do you think will happen?âÂ
âI'm uncertain, dear brother. As you know, we are only half-espers, and we don't have either of the time-related powers.â
âYou're usually good at predictions, though.â
âI use facts and logic to deduce things. I don't have enough intel on the employees or the students to predict our school life.â
âYes, yes, I know,â he muttered in my head.
A beat passed. A mask of quiet contemplation settled over his face.
âThey really had to wait that long to enroll us, huh?â Raymond sighed.
âWe kept failing our evaluations. Although, I think the fact that we need to be âprotectedâ because our species is practically going extinct played a small part.â
âProtected, my ass. More like imprisoned.â
âAt least they're paying for everything.â
âYeah, at least none of the inheritance money Mom left us is being touched,â he agreed. I looked over at him, a soft, exasperated expression crossing my face.
Now, where were we? Oh, don't worryâwe both trained specifically to block the other's powers when we want privacy. Anyway, I think that's all I find necessary to tell you readers...
...for now...
We hope to see you soon!
