I do not like reporting policies

The problem with university reporting policies for suicidal thoughts is that it's a fundamental betrayal of trust. If someone comes to you seeking help and you turn them in? Sure, maybe you've stopped them from making an attempt on their life. But you can guarantee that you've also deeply hurt them, and made them less likely to reach out to other people when they're hurting in the future.

If they don't explicitly say they are suicidal, and you respond by turning them in without asking? You've ensured they will not be able to turn to you in the future, because they know they can't trust you. And how likely are they to talk to someone else? Paranoia and fear can take over, and then they're trapped alone with their thoughts and a razor.
