OUT OF TIME
Evaluation
For this project I really wanted to make a final piece that was impressive and a high note to end on. At the start of the year things didnt go great, and that affected my work. For the third year I wanted to create a outcome that could rival previous years, like the Halo Advert and Alien invasion short.
At first I wanted to create a Bond spoof. But that quashed early on. I started contacting people to team up but decided to go our separate ways.
At the time I had just finished Jessica Jones and really liked the character of Kilgrave in that series. So I created a narrative following a villian. Feeling like it was lacking I added a sci fi twist. And it worked for the better in the end. This allowed me to do alot more VFX.
After the pitch. I had a strong idea and fully storyboarded. I started filming straight away to get it done and move onto the effects sooner. I am very grateful for the help had during filming.
Then I moved onto the post production. I aimed to get the project done a week early, so I created a VFX shot list to keep track of my progress. I got the edit down early on to help me do this.
Effect wise this project is a stand out for my previous submissions. I was doing every type of effect shot on my own, and each had to be of a high standard. I really wanted to push the boat out on this project, and to really show my compositing skills. I enjoyed doing the effects on the most part. But shots like the Face stab effect and the hand scanner proved to be a real challenge. In hindsight, for the face shot, I should have placed tracking markers on my face. Would have made the shot so much easier to track, in the end had to use different trackers to track certain features.
During the project noticed some really bad rolling shutter on my footage, most of that was refilmed. But certain parts could not and was left with what I had. Proving a challenge to track on occasions, but got there in the end.
For this project I was very happy I used Nuke. Im still 100% comfortable with the software, but can easily jump in and know roughly where to go. I managed to do a fair amount in Nuke. Not the whole project, as hoped, as I relied back to After Effects to do the shots I knew I could do, like the hologram effects.
Overall, I think this project went quite well. Im happy with the final outcome and think it in my top 5 projects. At times the travelling to Cardiff was taking its toll, but managed to get everything done on time as planned. The effect process was quite enjoyable for the most part, but some shots did require much more work than anticipated. Nothing wrong with the filming, just the expectation for those shots had ground significantly since being filmed. I got all the shots I wanted to do done and nothing was cut out of the final piece. I was really pleased with myself to finish the project with the most effects I have done so far, and to do it single handed. Doing every effect shot, meant I could see which process I liked best. I really come to like the clean up and comping in this project. Roto proved to be a pain, but a needed necessity.
Everything that was shot was in the final piece. If I cut shots, that would make the project a failure in my eyes and wanted this to be a strong outcome. I was rather sad to see it gone and submitted in the end.
If I could change anything about this project it would be the choice of camera. The Canon 5D Mark produced some really nasty rolling shutter, and wasnt till I switched to the Mark 3 that I noticed the dramatic change in quality.

HANDED IN
Helping out Others
During the course of this project I have helped a number of my class mates out. At the start of the project I asked Becky and Derin if they would like to collab on this project. We agreed early on to do our own thing but we mutually agreed to help each other out on each others project.
I provided Becky with Port Talbot and Factory images from my personal images for her matte paintings. I also offered to help them during filming of their projects.
I was asked to help Darren’s project, when I was asked to act. Was going to be a fellow X Wing pilot that saves Darrens back. But myself and Ash were cut for time reasons.
I helped Ash film his project in the greenscreen studio. I created the lighting setup and dressed the table for the scene. Adding in details to make it look real. I also gave input into my personal choice for camera angles.
I also helped Ed and Sian film their project. These I just helped in the greenscreen studio as a Extra pair of hands and general light moving.
Poster Artwork
So I asked my friend if he could design some artwork for me. He’s really good at graphic design. And he has produced 2 posters for the video and theyre amazing!
The first is very simple but a striking image. Love the double exposure. And the second is based on the Blade Runner style posters. Both really awesome! Love them.
Finished Edit
Finally finished doing the sound design for the project. Music and sound is not my strong point, but I was lucky enough before the project to find royalty free music that really fitted the style and edited to that.
As for the sound effects, I think they work quite effective. I really like the death stab sound. As thats one I struggled in finding a cool sound for. In the end I combined a Electric Arcing sound form FreeSFX with various other electric sounds and a stab sound, to make the final sound. Think I works quite well.
Tried adding some ambient sound of machinery in the workshop section to, to make it sound like im under the city.
Short Breakdown
Before the deadline, I liked to have done a few breakdowns, but didnt have time too. So I created this quick breakdown, to show some of the invisbible effects, I did for this project.
Hopefully they go unnoticed. Theyre a a few shots like this where I added people and removed stuff in the shot to make more believable.
Files and Folders
Export Tests
After noticing some really bad compression on my final renders. I used the last night to render out in different formats, using a range of settings to see which produced the best result.
Rendering in Quicktime PNG gave the cleanest result but compressing to h.264 producing the compression again. But doing a bt of tweaking with the bit rate and encoding pass. I got a result Im happy with.
h.264 with CBR of 10. Produced the cleanest result and uploading it to Vimeo proved the best option. Glad, got it looking decent, as I didnt want the project to fall fall of 12 long weeks working on it.
Completed VFX Shot List
Heres my completed shot list. There were more shots added later, like the removing the boxes in the workshop shot and adding the beginning text was a later addition. So the final video has 30 effect shots.

Premiere Compression Export
For the last chat with Chris today, I rendered out my edit at the higher export compared to last. Looking at the export, I noticed some really bad compression, especially in the workshop sequence. The arm of my suit and back of head are a mess.
At the talk with Chris today I noticed the compression was not noticeable on the Macs. So got away with it but on my computer at home its really noticeable to anyone who knows about these sort of things.
I’ll try and render out some different versions to test the export. I’ve done so much hard work on this and dont want it to fall flat just because the Premiere export is horrible.
Fonts
Ive got 2 potential font to use at the moment. One being the Windows is own System font. And I downloaded a Apple II type font.
Comparing the two to see which looks nicer. I much prefer the Apple type font. The rounded edges makes the type more legible. It has that subtle pix-elation on the sides but not extreme ‘pac man’ style as the System font.
Im going to be using the Apple font for my text from now on.
Opening Design
After looking a few old computers, I designed a simple layout for the text. Simple box with thick lines to show top and bottom.
I want to make this look authentic and I know Issac is doing a retro display. So want to make mine look different from his. As I dont want to copy. But you cant really do much as its simple and Retro design
Compaq Portable
I was doing some research on old computers and found this. Its a Compaq Portable and has a really cool screen on it. What I really like from this is, how the text fades away. It leaves behind an after image of sorts, and this looks really cool.
For the opening text already I have the text fade. Chris was thinking it should backspace away. I agreed until I saw this effect. Its really cool and look really retro and sci-fi
