GoFundMe Boycott and Alternatives
Since this time of year tends to see an increase in fundraising needs, I thought it might be worth posting a reminder that:
GoFundMe allowed and defended the campaign for Darren Wilson, despite the fact that the majority of supporters were white supremacists and the comments were filled with violent racist language. They let it continue, even though their acceptable use policy prohibits fundraisers "that promote hate, violence, racial intolerance or the financial exploitation of a crime".
Although they were happy to take money from the KKK and their ilk, they removed someone's abortion fundraiser amid anti-choice protests.
They then updated their guidelines to prohibit abortion fundraisers (using anti-choice buzzwords like "termination of life"), while still allowing anti-abortion campaigns.
Because GoFundMe makes their money off the proceeds of fundraisers, I no longer feel comfortable donating to or promoting campaigns hosted on their site. It saddens me greatly because I know there are a lot of good people with important causes up there.
So, some alternatives:
GoGetFunding (similar to GoFundMe)
YouCaring (doesn't charge a fee)
IndieGoGo (not just for kickstarters, you can do personal campaigns)
If you already have a campaign started on GoFundMe, perhaps consider providing an alternative paypal donation link for people who would like to support but are boycotting GFM.
