They come direct from the large old earthen kura storehouse of a prominent Kyoto Nishijin Kimono merchant that was in business since feudal times. These sample books usually ‘go down with the ship’ and are destroyed with the closure of the shop. Chock full of genuine period fabrics, each sample book is unique and one of a kind. Many include brocade fabrics with gold or silver thread. Layers upon layers of fabrics, hiding yet more layers of fabric behind them.”
